Man this is kind of weird but I used to have such a huge passion for music. I just loved listening to all kinds of genres and it made me so happy and it was all I talked about with my friends. In my early twenties I got insanely depressed and fell out of my love for music but this video combined with the album sequencing video has really revived my interest. Great videos man, I'm kind of bummed that I only found your channel recently but I'm looking forward to watching more 😊

Disagree big time. His album covers suck, but it does kind of fit because he's a very low-effort artist. The only 2 that I think work in terms of aesthetic are Goblin and Flower Boy. Igor almost gets there. But Tyler is and always will be lame, because he genuinely is talented but he cops out at every opportunity because from the beginning he cultivated an unquestioningly loyal OF fanbase. He is a Juggalo, basically.

After Hours album cover. Shows the evil, the pain, the regret. Shows that Abel is bleeding out, that he feels he doesn’t have long to live, his facial expression shows him looking down at you capturing the evil and darkness that his music always had. The bright sounds mixed with the evil lyrics. Blinding Lights sounds so bright and fun but when you go into the lyrics it shows a man dying inside, who’s desperate and just wants to be let out of the hellhole that the industry and his event love put him through. It perfectly captures the time it was released unintentionally. Where covid just started and we needed something to mask the year or two we would go through this. And honestly if you just want to find a corner to cry in while it’s raining and dark out while having the lights off and the doors closed with a street light shining through the blinds then this is the one for you. The grandness of After Hours, the darkness and pain of Faith, the upbeat and fun of Blinding Lights, and the shattering of one’s heart in the conclusion of Until I Bleed Out. This album captures just that. A man who’s heart is ripped into pieces by a woman causing him to metaphorically bleed out and die inside.

I think modern music streaming services have amplified the importance of album covers. Anything you run Spotify on is showing you the album cover the entire time you listen if you're looking at the screen, and it forces you to associate the cover and the mood of the music if you consume them in conjunction.
I can see where you're coming from, but I personally disagree, especially in comparison to physical copies like vinyl. For spotify, you're basically just staring at a small .jpg image of the album cover. For vinyl, you're literally holding the album cover itself

I really love the How To Be A Human Being album cover by Glass Animals, knowing that each song is represented by a character on the cover and getting to know their stories through the songs is so special to me. Also I feel like it just really matches the vibe of the whole album really well, like you know what kind of sounds to expect from the cover.

Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is an amazing album cover in my opinion, like all of My Chemical Romance’s albums covers. It’s sad, romantic, and gory at once. Not to mention the beautiful watercolor.

The cover for bury me at makeout creek is perfect for me. Just love that window reflecting the sun. Also the name fits well somehow.
I think Daft Punk and their theming of the albums is a perfect example of minimalist. On Homework, the red and black makes you feel like youre in a gritty club, where the house music will be playing. On Discovery, the silver and rainbow makes you feel like a child ready to experience this vibrant album. Human After All gives you the dark, eerie vibe of how pixelated TV, and Random Access Memories’ gold and silver helmets makes you feel the classiness they want you to feel when listening to the album.

I really love the cover to Mac Demarco “2”. It’s just a simple black and white portrait of him - but what really sells it is how he smiles straight at the camera and holds 2 fingers up, like some character in an animated movie sequel (Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 2 all do this). Then the title of the album is in a nasty baby blue font. Its so perfect, and perfectly presents the music, the album, and the artist as a whole.

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album cover is the best album cover for me, it's one of the reasons why I love Pink Floyd and why it's my favorite band of all time, most of their album covers look so good and interesting, it makes me listen their music even it has a 26 minutes long song
I think my favorite album cover is easily BALLADS 1 by Joji. Like you said having your face on the album cover needs to be unique in some away, and either needs to tie in to or contrast what the music is about. Joji smiling in such a raw, creepy, and simply honest way with that grainy look fits the music so well, while also contrasting it. Love it so much
Melodramma cover’s album by Lorde is something else: makes you wanna die and live at the same time.

Whenever I listen to madvilliany it actually sounds like I’m listening to a supervillain tell his story throughout the album. I love the dark feel to it and that’s why I listen to it so much
Blackstar by David Bowie is another example of a perfect minimalist album cover I think. In fact he has so many iconic covers, Station to Station, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Heroes to name a few.
My personal favorite will always be Melodrama by Lorde though. It is exactly in the colours of the album due to her sound-colour synesthesia and it's literally a work of art because it's a painting!
Low, Hunky Dory, Black Tie White Noise are all pretty great as well. I dislike the cover to Diamond Dogs… but it fits the music which I love, so I guess it works

The cover for the album rush of blood to the head by coldplay really gives you that feeling of fading away especially with the songs being mellow at points and being loud at points. This shows with the context that this album has since it was created in the memory of 911. Even the singles from the album have there own take on the cover and its really just amazing
For the After Hours Album Cover you can't tell if The Weeknd is the villian or the victim. Its a great album cover just because of that.

i felt this with tyler’s flower boy, the album has such a summery vibe to it and the album cover perfectly compliments that with the field of sunflowers and the orange sky using bright colors

The reason I love DAMN. so much is partly because of the cover. Kendrick's facial expression says so much about the album, the names and themes of each song all add up to his realization that "I can't change the world until I change myself". One of the greatest albums from the 2010s

I've always loved both of the GKMC covers they both feel so powerful and they both set the tone very well along with the fact that the album itself is amazing and can correlate a bit to the covers and its overall theme feels very nostalgic which is yet again brought up when the tracks end with the little tape at the end
One of my favorite examples of this is Big Thief’s Masterpiece album cover. The cover simultaneously has no context, but also sets up the feel for the whole album. I always found it to really spark my imagination. Great video

Pinkerton is my favorite album of all time, and I think the cover fits it perfectly. The sad looking gnomes perfectly encapsulate the sad, emotionally wrecked, and distrought feeling the album has.
Pinkerton is magnificent.
The Weeknd has his face on almost every album cover but he frames it so differently in After Hours and the fact that he looks so beat up really said to me that this one is gonna hurt. And then the Deluxe edition distorts the color into a red which is almost haunting.
I had to pause on the orange and blue movie covers part. I can’t believe I’ve never noticed that
I'm a fan of simplistic covers cause I immediately want to decipher them. I love the covers like on Revival where it shows a visible transition the artist is taking (regardless of your feelings on that album), or an artists looking down showing a weighty introspection/contemplation.
All the Mitski album covers perfectly show the roller coaster of emotions in her songs
solange's "A Seat at the Table" and "When I Get Home" are both pretty simplistic, but both perfect album covers to me

the album art for “awaken, my love!” by childish gambino is just...ugh so good. the facial expression of the person on the cover is amazing and the COLORS. the deep blue perfectly encapsulates how the album feels. i don’t even like all the songs on that album, but i swear the cover art sells it for me.

You know I have a feeling that people who say “Don’t judge a book by its cover” probably say that because they picked some ugly ass covers to represent their works.
The metaphorical sense of it about people is often true, but literally? It's bullshit. I ain't buying a book unless that cover slaps, and the title too.
I heard that most authors don't actually have a say in what covers are used for their books. I guess the publishers make that decision for them :(

"souvlaki" by slowdive is probably the best album cover i have seen in my life. the colors match the sounds and its just such a curious and heartbreaking and cold yet familiar photo at the same time

I actually never truly thought about the important relationship between the feelings that the songs of an album give you and the one that the songs' album cover also gives you, so thank you for sharing the topic. It's surely something that I'll watch out in my future listening session! The album cover for year of the snitch by death grips has got to be my favorite album cover. It's really unsettling and weird and perfectly captures how the album sounds.

I think people were trying to justapose(?) Their perspective of 2016 being better than 2015 so that's why there's lots of colorful album covers and happy upbeat songs but with dark lyrics

I watched this video when it came out and listened to the little snippet of Space Song by Beach House. 2 years later I went to one of their concerts and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'm forever thankful for these videos, Nathan.
Michael's Dangerous Album cover really captures the experimental industrial sound of the album. There were so many things in the cover just like in the songs but as a whole it all still looks coherent and fits together. The overwhelming amount of objects in the details makes sense since the album tackles world matters and that can feel like a lot. The paint-like and aristocratic details suits the gospel side of the album sound then theres the darkness and warm coloring that fits with the masculinity of the album

I too have synesthesia like Lorde and when I first saw that cover for the first time and listened to the album……I was like the cover captures the meaning, essence, and emotion of the album. It’s truly a masterpiece. Even with solar power. Although not my fav album, it just captures the vibe of the album.

Really fantastic video. I'm a graphic design teacher and I just introduced them to an Album Art assignment today. After I was finished laying it out with some demos, I just searched for "Album Art documentary" in CZcams here, and yours was the first video to pop up, so I played this as the students began working. Fit what I was trying to convey to a "T." I truly appreciate you putting this together and how well you articulated and illustrated the concepts in such an entertaining format.
