My friend tweeted once, "If art is how we decorate space, then music is how we decorate time"
i wouldn't call art and music a filler, art is a creative outlet that represents the artist and the people that decorate themselves with it, we are the empty spaces and art is what makes us complete
@@travislloyd6761 that why they said decorate and not fill, still agree with what u said too

The question of life is “Will Nathan Zed ever miss?” Philosophers have been riled up about this question for years now.
No.
never
He literally cannot.
never has never will
Philosophers have not been wondering because they already know that the answer is "No."
that one tumblr post that said "if art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time"
I love this

It’s a quote by Jean Michel Basquiat
Same thing was said by Frank zappa: "you have a piece of time, and you can decorate it anyhow. Same as our lifes"
Nostalgic music is the closest thing we have to time travel

this happened to me yesterday
The year I graduated from college, that song played at every party. It’s not a perfect song but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t mentally send me back to 2016 every time.
Oh nooooooo
This man really put “work work work” over the first song ever made 😭😭
When you said that line about "making new memories with new music" it kinda hit me.
Few years ago i stopped searching actively for new music, and about that time period i was depressed: i didnt wanted to experience nothing new, everything was "pale" and "lifeless" compared to my memories of "good times at school/early university" years, i've been spending my days at my room, sleeping, barely eating, and dreaming about how my life could've been better. I vividly remember how before that period, i was actively searching for music in magazines/stores, discussing it with friends and classmates (even if discussion was just "that shit good"), every track rom that time has that specifit little memory ingrained. "Homecoming" from Kanye West reminds me of last time i was sitting at Dads car while we were driving to store. "Crazy in Love" reminds me of time when i had no shame dancing in my own room imagining im pop-star diva. "Feel Good inc." reminds me of all of my classmates who were trying to impress girls with their "cool musical taste". So many memories are attached to music from that time, but when i became depressed, i stopped making new memories, and i actually can barely remember any music i discovered for myself at that time.
I actually started feeling better recently but just couldnt get what wrong with my presception of everything. Lately i can barely consume any kind of content, not just music, and i think the lack of good memories is the main reason.
Im not sure why im actually writing this as i hope noones gonna read that embarassing wall of text, I just wanted to thank you for making those amazing videos. At least i can say for myself, this video made one life a bit better :D
P.S.: apologizing if i made grammar mistakes, English is not my first language.
Thanks for writing this I feel like I am in a similar situation. I wanna say covid is the reason but honestly I wasn't making many new memories and discovering music before it either soooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Being on the internet too much is partly the reason I stopped I guess. Seeing people talk about music online is such a toxic shitshow. Why is everyone so mad and defensiveeeee
this really hits
I have never related to a comment so much before
Hey, I know I'm a year late to this, but I just wanna say: it's not too late! I know it sucks looking back on a "better time" but if you live your life comparing every moment to the one before it you won't enjoy any of them! I know this is a lot harder than it sounds (especially with the pandemic and all lol) but try and go out and do things that you enjoy and that positively contribute to you or others and memories and stuff will come naturally without you thinking about it. The important thing is not to give up and I really hope you don't. God bless, hope you find a better place!
I so glad you said this cause i’ve felt the same way. I sort of find myself in these cycles where i just feel stuck and every time i break out of it it’s always associated with new music. Idk if it’s the music causing this change in attitude that makes me feel better or if i just happen to be willing to listen to new music during those times but i find it so fascinating that there’s even a connection
On January 27th my mum passed away because of Covid 19. I never really understood what music meant to me until now. Just listening to songs from the 2010s can just bring me to tears and I know this will sound cringy but I feel as though I understand the songs I listen to on a different level.

The entire views album makes me insanely nostalgic. No friends, didn’t do anything all day in the summer but hoop and play video games. Somehow I long for those days again, not because they were enjoyable, but because they were simple.
Damn what kind of world that we live in where you’d rather live life simple then live life enjoyable? Like why do we long for that time again?

"Rather be" by Clean Bandit. One sunny morning sometime in the spring of 2014, I had woken up taken a bath, made my lunch, done all the things I needed to get done for school. As I was sitting in the living room eating my breakfast and watching MTV's morning music program, there it was. The song. I heard about 3 seconds of it before my eyes were glued to the TV to see where that sound came from, where that sound was going. When the music video was over, I shortly after had to go, cause I was already running a little late. I took my helmet, rode my bike to school, while meeting my friend halfway there so we could ride together to school like we always did.
Some weeks or even days after, the song became really popular and I remember that one time where one of the girls in our class was playing the song and singing along. All sudden more and more started singing along to it, and I looked around and every single girl in our class was singing along. We didn't always agree on things, and often there would be drama between some of us, like there is in any 7th grade class. But singing together, was something we were quite good at.
"Rather be" reminds me of that.
Haha I love that song, it was actually my alarm sound for a year in middle school, that really takes me back
I definitely understand what you mean when you say that music can make you nostalgic for times we here you weren’t even born. I was born in 2006 and whenever I hear early 2000’s pop or rock music I instantly get hit with a blast of nostalgia even though I either wasn’t born or was just really young when those songs came out, but that might also be because of my older siblings who were all teenagers in the 2000’s and introduced me to that type of music when I was really young
All the Right Reasons by Nickelback.
slide is honestly the most nostalgic song and it’s not even 4 years old already

Graduation being my favourite time 07 😭😭😭
Some other artists give me this too, but I feel like a lot of rappers nail certain periods of time so perfectly in my memory. First song that comes to mind is ‘Forever’ and how crazy about it I was for that one period of time

Especially graduation. Graduation might have the most nostalgic quality of any album I’ve ever listened to.

The thing I love/hate about nostalgia in music is you don’t know when your making memories. You just enjoy the music. Sooo many albums I remember listening to years ago that when I revisit them now I’m like “wow this is a classic” and so many memories flood in
I’m a 6 foot 3 220 pound black man that loves “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus cause it reminds me of scoring touchdowns in high school, because they would play it ever time we would score.

I remember back in 2016, my cousin showed me Ps & Qs by Lil Uzi Vert. I thought the song was terrible, I absolutely hated the instrumental. But then, I had gone over to my cousin's house in 2020. It had been a really long time since I'd seen him, and he started playing Ps & Qs again. And then it was like it was a completely different song. Listening to the song was like euphoria; everything about 2016 just seemed so good compared to 2020.

Blonde for me is one of the most powerfully nostalgic albums of my life
Lady gaga's album, Chromatica, is so so weird. It came out in the MIDDLE of the pandemic, when everyone was forced to stay inside and there was a curfew...I remember listening to it while in bed, waiting for it to come out. I just listened to the entire album and closed my eyes and thought about how if this came out before corona (or if corona never happened) we'd probably listen to it in some nice club. No matter how hard i try when i listen to that album, it really takes me back to that "lonely" time of pandemic lockdown wishing to live life again. Crazy

The most nostalgic song for me is Down by Jay Sean. Brings me right back to my 8th grade field trip to Six Flags when we were singing it on the way up Nitro before the drop. I can still rap Lil Wayne's verse word for word 😭
I remember being 4 years old singing that song outside with my sister on a summer day
That and the other obvious track from the time, Replay are great ways of remembering the days I just simply hung out with the older boys not really knowing how to act but just following along

Blonde literally dropped the day I moved out of my parents place and into my college dorm freshman year. Could not have come at a more perfect time and i get flashbacks from listening to it
What song / album was it?
Blonde, by Frank Ocean. That dropped just shortly before my dad passed while I was a sophomore in high school. In the depths of my depression I listend to that. It comforted me then, and hearing it now makes me realize how far I've come, which comforts me.
I still remember taking a slow drag from a cigarette in the alley by my apartment on a warm summer night while the bass waves washed over me as I was serenaded by Nikes.

Okay but when that old lady started talking about how music soothes her nerves... that speaks to everyone on a deeper level whether you know it or not. Words from the wise
Tyler’s Hot Wind Blows was my fav song off the album when it came out, right when I was home in Seattle during the 110 degree heat wave. Perfect
That line “music is only as good as the memories attached to it” is so incredibly facts. 2016-2017 music was a huge part of my middle high school life, yet that time in my life i don’t really remember being myself or the person i am today, i was transitioning and going through the motions. Which is honestly why i don’t look back at music from that era which are objectively good, in the same great light anymore. it’s tainted in a way, because the memories don’t feel great, the music doesn’t feel great. but 2018-2020, everything in my playlist i still love and look back to.

This is why "baby" by joeboy is a favourite song for me now. When I had a stay in a psych ward 5 years ago, I listened to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" on repeat for the whole month I was there. I had to play it through my shitty iPhone 4 speakers because my headphones were taken away from me. That album got me through the worst time of my life. And now when I listen to it, there's this kinda bittersweet feeling - I am transported back to that sad time and those feelings come rising up again but I also smile to myself and feel a sense of pride as I reflect on how far I've come in my recovery

i have a very vivid memory of my first few weeks during the 2020 lockdown. i was working on a sculpture for my college class, standing in my garage on beautiful spring days, just experiencing Gambino's 3.15.20 album. it's impossible for me to listen to any of those songs now without picturing that in my head. and despite the general roughness and mental struggles i went through in the lockdown, i will always cherish those moments. golden moments, appreciation of nature, of music, of life in general. the music made that moment so much more powerful & stands out in my mind thanks to it.
I swear, citypop takes my 19 year old ass back to some 1980s summer.
Like sure, that genre was popular in the 80s, so it's bound to sound a little old-ish, but there's so many songs within the genre that actually genuinely make me feel like I was alive back then, and feel nostalgia for something that didn't even happen. I don't know how they do it.
I remember the first time I heard stay with me.
Blew my mind, what a wonderful time that must have been, to be wearing a gold Casio with a Walkman on your hip.
Knowing the events in Japan absolutely makes the music created from the time even better, just knowing that everybody was sort of having fun the same way you are, it really is a vibe.
its a classic, all ive done is read the title and its a classic
“Transcending into the 5th dimension” is EXACTLYYYYY how it feels 😭
What you said about setting expectations for new art and comparing them to art we have memories attached to is so important. The way I listened to new albums seriously changed after realizing that
I think I found my ALL TIME FAVOURITE Chanel 💛 I thought I knew all there is to know about music till now.. MAD RESPECT!
