Sailing Deserted Islands - Bahamas

- Have you ever wanted to have a tropical island to yourself? We think the Bahamas is one of the few cruising destinations where this is possible! The Plana Cays lie 20 miles from the nearest settlement, and they are uninhabited.
One theory is that this was Columbus' first landfall in the Caribbean. We can't get over the fabulous colour of the water and the miles of white sand beach. There is an off-lying reef so we anchor outside and bring the dinghy in to shore.

Out of all the cruising destinations I've seen on CZcams, the Bahamas seem to have the prettiest shades of that magical Caribbean green that we all wish to be in the midst of. Thanks so much for your high quality cinematography of this beautiful area, that allows us all the vicarious thrill of traveling on Distant Shores with you.
Yes the Bahamas waters are amazing! We are looking forward to our next visit! Glad you're enjoying the videos Matt!
This life may be my reality sooner than I planned and permanently

Rob and bank and then go buy a island you can live like this in tropical paradise
Congratulations!
Yo, are you living the life. Still waiting for MOASS

We loved our sailing in your waters! Back in 2010 we sailed up to the Baltic and Stockholm before crossing back through the Gota Canal! Lovely!!
man you are lucky keep posting
I swear if I become a millionaire, this will be my hobby every other week.
You don’t need to be a millionaire, about $30,000 could get you a decent sailboat to get there
@@Archalias100 you can get one for 1000 euros. one which is suitable for oceans
Blackbeard must of thought it was another world with the colour of the water compared to the murky waters of the Bristol Channel!
My village of Pill which is 4-5 miles down stream of Bristol would have had a visit from Blackbeard at some time or another I'm sure!
Also the last places John Cabot sailed from as he would have needed to wait for the next tide and Pill was the place to wait!
Another beauty! I assume this was filmed some time ago?
Glad you liked it! (yes we filmed this 2 years ago on our most recent visit)
Nice!
Could the keel sustain damage due to careening?
Towel and a few books and I could spend 5 days there. Need that right about now
Im going to take over the Bahamas
Up for a crusade?
Oh man, I'm definitely going. Screw the Pacific 😆
Hi distant shores. I have been watching your videos and am enjoying it very much. I have been looking to sailing the world and I was wondering if you could give some tips on how you finance your sailing. On paper i am finding very difficult.
Glad you enjoy the vids Normancon! We are TV producers and have been funding that way (which has always been difficult). Here is a link to our "Budget for Cruising" blog... www.distantshores.ca/boatblog_files/budget-for-cruising.php
Thanks for responding. I have look many places to try and get an estimate as i have near to no experience with the funding of a cruiser. Thanks for giving a sizable range.
magnifique
Merci Georges :-)
I looked this up because I was curious if boat owners just go to uninhabited islands for fun. I am pleased with the search results.
Nice
Is there any way I can spend a week aboard a boat with hosts in the Southern Bahamas? I am a beginner, and I am very inspired!
Near which island was the desert island? Amazing
can you camp on these islands or at least anchor there for a few days?
I live in Florida and wanted to go to the Bahamas on my waverunner.
If you mean on a JetSki I seem to recall a video series of folks who did that. They all travelled in a group to they could help one who had problems...
I saw that video too, they launched out of Miami.
Mule Skynr thank god you cleared that up....I had no idea what it meant in lowercase.....🙄
very much possible, have you done it yet ?
Me too!! Be sure you buy your GPS finder, register it with the Coast Guard and take it with just in case:) If anything goes wrong, activate & the coast guard will locate you in no time. Have fun Girl!!!!
My wife and I are planning to purchase a sailboat on the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico. I have had my captains Liscense for many years. Any advice where to look what towns or Marinas not finding much on Boat trader or YachtWorld?
whish I was there , do you ever need ballast ? - I am available
What vessel do you own? It's great for really shallow water!
Its a Southerly swing-keel 49 ... distantshores.ca/about-us/the-boats/southerly-49/
02:04 wait! if no one was there, who did the filming? :-D
drones
Norman oh we have the same profile picture lol I thought that was me lol😂.
Everytime the "Last Man on Earth" theme has been introduced into films or books its betrayed on by introducing more characters. I'd like to experience if only by ...... what it would be like to have the entire Earth as a destination.
We knew a young couple that crossed the Gulfstream in a 16 ft Hobie Cat!
woooow,,,from where to where ??????
The Vikings discovered America before Christoffer Columbus.. But grate line of videos :)
lol but not the caribbean
How can they be alone when someone's filming them as they arrive on the island? There is a mysterious 3rd person with a camera somewhere.
It's only because of your lens polarization that it looks so great. In reality it would be too bright.
thats what polarized sun glasses are for lol
he said there's an offline reef so he anchors outside and bring the dinghy in to shore. what is an offline reef? anyone please..thx.
💞💞a💞💞
Why are they inhabited??
Is it illegal to sail to the Bahamas and sell stuff to locals? (Legal items of course)
Pancakefatboy 669 as long as you dont do it in a regular kinda company style its aight
I mean if u sell smth once in a while noone bats an eye
people always looking to barter, especially if they know you are coming and can ask you to bring something specific(legal of course) like parts.
can a boat anchor off these sort of islands without having to announce your arrival with the government?
Yep. In Florida we boat or even jet ski to the Bahamas for the day. It is that close and accessible. czcams.com/users/results?search_query=jet+skiing+to+the+bahamas
sand flyes are they bad in the area I hurd really nasty
Mosquitos can be bad on calm days. At anchor we were rarely bothered...
please God send me there
send yourself!
Looks like you guys had a great time! Awesome video! Check out our BVI video if you get the chance: czcams.com/video/ovhYclatWy0/video.html
0:23.........."heading over to Mayaguana".......
As soon as I win the Powerball lottery I'm going to BUY more than 5,000 ACRES of land on Mayaguana and build what would eventually become the largest "nudist, naturist, clothing optional enthusiast beach, campground, resort, community, town" on the entire planet.
who are these people trying to fool. The Bahamas is filled with thousands of vessels everyplace. Just like most locations its been overrun and ruined by tourist, charters and just about any kind of boat that can float.
You're wrong Tzahal... there are thousands of vessels in the Bahamas but the area is HUGE. There are many places you can have to yourself if you're on your own boat and exploring :-) Fair winds
Just wanted to give you my personal opinion since I have never seen one of your videos before. In no way do I want to hate on you just giving you my two sense. This doesn't feel like the real you, this video has a huge feel of a PBS show. The scripted voice over with the history or geology anecdotes turns me off. When I'm watching sailing videos I want to see the real people who sail the waters not a fake scripted version of them. Online it's all about community, and I just can't connect with a wooden scripted person. So I'm not going to subscribe, although good cinematography and research behind this but this is defiantly not for me.
Thanks for your comments UW. We have been making television shows for broadcast television since 1993 and always try to add the facts and provide more info for viewers, not just our "in the moment" reaction since we feel this is more useful. Of course plenty of modern you-tubers will give you what you want. We are definitely not "fake" and pride ourselves on trying to capture the real experience. Our shows have aired on PBS in the past, as well as the Travel Channel, and Discovery Channel, AWE TV and the Nautical Channel in millions of homes around the world in 26 languages. Thanks again for your feedback.
I love the history and how to. You're not a couple 20 year old millennials; don't try to be.
Thanks Mark 😊 we'll keep going as we are!
