    We used to time our trips to our island 5 miles south of there back in the 1960's with the low tide. We would land on the tidal floor at Compass, taxi up on the beach, and take our small boat down to Dennis Cay, an island Dad bought in 1962. It sit's just west of Sampson Cay with a small home on the southern water's edge. It was all so beautiful and pristine back then. Sadly, with the introduction of drug running in the 80's and the sale of lots on Staniel Cay...it is ruined forever...it was once paradise!

    I agree with you about the shallow water down there being beautiful. I've never actually been on the ground there but have flown over the Bahamas many times and there is nothing better than clear, warm shallow water and no one has more of that than the Bahamas.

      Cruising Tip: Wearing shirts with your name and boat name on them is very common amongst cruising sailors since it's helpful to others for remembering names and putting names to boats when you're meeting new people at Cruisers' Happy Hours and Dock Parties. They are like name tags which are helpful when everyone is meeting new people all the time.

    Contrary to what you said in the video, I would not describe a draft of 2' 10" as "shallow draft". That's close...but not quite there. IMHO less than 2' is fairly described as shallow draft, and even then, closer to 1 foot or less is more like it. I also wonder how well the boat can sail upwind (no motor) while the centerboard/keel is lifted up to 2' 10". I have a feeling it's the monohull sailors who are prone to describe "shallow draft" that way because they are accustomed to having keels.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  Před 7 lety

      Whoa "1' or less" is shallow draft??? I have never seen a cat over 40 foot with that kind of draft...
      You're right that our Southerlies sail poorly upwind when the keel is raised up. But they will sail upwind when its down a bit - say 5' or so.

    • @melellington6677
      @melellington6677 Před 7 lety

      If you meant "shallow draft"-for a 40 ft sailboat, you didn't say so. My reply referred explicitly to use of the term "shallow draft". A 400 ft sailing ship with a draft of 15 feet might be considered shallow draft compared to other 400 ft sailing ships, but it is not shallow draft compared to a 14' jon boat with a drought of 4-6". Clearly, the term "shallow draft" is not defined by specific units of measurement, so you are
      free to describe a draft of 10 feet as shallow draft if you wish. However, in my view the Wharram Tiki 38 catamaran with a draft of 2 feet is fairly described as "shallow draft". Where I live (in the Florida Keys) most of the sea within a half mile from shore is 2 feet or less with much of it 1 foot at low tide. My 30 foot blue water cruising catamaran can navigate those shallow waters because it has a 1.2 foot "shallow draft". Nonetheless, I sometimes see monohull sailors describing their 3 to 4 foot draft as "shallow draft".

    • @mikestone9129
      @mikestone9129 Před 7 lety

      In my opinion, any sailboat with a draft 3 foot or less is shallow draft...

    • @dreadfog
      @dreadfog Před 4 lety

      Mel Ellington This is a sailing video , and mono hull sailors consider anything under 4’ shallow draft.
