    I’m still fascinated that Primus lent their name to such a reasonably priced lantern. They made excellent music back in the day.

    One minor factor is sound. The Primus and the Soto perform the quietest. With the Soto being almost silent. Thanks for your review. Cheers!

    Great review. You covered all the bases without a lot of wasted words. I like a video that gets to the point and does not need to try and WOW you with some big hyped up intro or over the top hyper active presenter. I like the comparisons and your balanced and open attitude. Thank You Very Much! I learned a lot!

    Thanks for uploading this. I bought an Epigas lantern today for just £1 at a car boot sale (yard sale) so needed to learn more about it. Looks like it is the worst of the bunch but for the price point I paid for it I am certainly not going to complain!

    I have several of them and the Soto is identical to a Brunton one, the biggest problem with the micron is the wind through the mesh. Nice review

    I’ve owned the snow peak for about 8 years, and it has served me well for backpacking. I think that the primus is probably better, but I’ve owned that as well, and having used them both at the same time, I prefer the extra brightness of the SP. great review, sir!

      why primus is better if you personally prefer SP? in terms of pure aesthetics and build quality SP lantern looks way better. primus is lighter, yes in mesh version, not a glass one.

    I choose the primus based on your review and have been generally pleased with my decision. My only complaint is that after 3 days of indoor storage I am have the top of the lantern begin to rust and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Any input would be greatly appreciated, as I am considering returning.

    • @fp4man542
      @fp4man542 Před 2 lety

      That's pretty much standard for small gas lanterns.
      I think that the most economical model was the Coleman F1 lantern, at just 25g/h, but that went out of production some years ago.
      In most camping situations, you can turn the gas down a bit and get much longer run times.

  • @jeromebullard6123
    @jeromebullard6123 Před 3 lety

    As much as I love gas lanterns, your best bet is something like the black diamond pocket lamp. It lasts a long ass time for something running on batteries. Also, you can instantly turn it on and off. Mine was brighter than my snow peak giga,, and it lasted like ten five day hikes. Hands down far better.
    Save your canister fuel for your stove.

      The camping stores in my area have replaced almost all camping & hiking gas lanterns in their catalogue with LED models. The simplicity & safety of battery-run LED ones is a great plus, but if you're going on extended trips you need spare batteries or a powerbank. Also, the gas canisters can be used for the hiking stove.

    Luminescence is the standard measure of brightness, watt is not. Watt is a measure of power, volt * amps, it is often used as a proxy for brightness, very bad one in fact, as you discovered in your comparison, because more efficient lamp will use less power, but may shine brighter while consuming less energy.

    i thought these were just a nostalgia gimmick, why would anyone use such a thing for practical purposes when u have led nowadays.....there are literally led lanterns (nextool 600 lumen lantern) the size of the micro gas lantern itself excluding the gas canister that outputs 600 lumens.....almost as bright as an ikea e27 bulb itself....and last nearly 5 to 6 hours on its brightest setting, long enough to last u through the night....two or three of those things is literally enough to light up any room in ur house as bright as ur living room 40 watt florescent light.

    No thumbs up because you used metric system which STINKS.
    20C is what 500F??
    Also you did not compare the isobutane candle lights (Luxada for example).
    When backpacking, those fragile mantles will break more often and more easily.
    In a SHTF scenario, mantles may be impossible to find.
    You did not test those lights with straight propane.
