How to build an Ultra Realistic River - Realistic Scenery Vol.13

- čas přidán 28. 09. 2018
- A complete in depth guide into building an amazing river scene that will drastically improve the detail on any model layout.
Adding a scene like this to your model railway layout will grab the attention of anyone who sees it! The model is HO scale but the tips and techniques used in the video can be applied to nearly any other scale you model in.
I’m using a relatively new product called ‘Deep Pour Water’ from Woodland Scenics to add the water on this model, it’s basically a two part epoxy however it is pre colored which makes building modules with adjoining river pieces will be much easier to match the color.
I purchased it from www.hobbytechtoys.com.au in Perth, Australia and even though they are literally on the other side of the country they were very quick in getting my order posted and the service was great! They have a huge store and it’s well worth having a browse as they stock many items that are often hard to find at other hobby stores.
For more photos of this model check out www.bouldercreekrailroad.com and visit the photo gallery.
Also don’t forget to check out Kathy Millatt and her CZcams channel, it jam packed full of great video tutorials on a huge variety of modelling topics.
/ nynhhkathy - Zábava
This is what CZcams is about. Just a guy passionate about what he does. He uses a toy truck for the tracks, real dirt, twigs, leaves, and grass. The amount of love he puts into each diorama is absolutely incredible.
my man, youtube's about breaking plates and disrespecting entire cultures in your daily vlog to then point out the few good things you've done in a diss track in hopes of the entire platform either forgiving you or forgetting about it in the other bullshit you've done since then. nevermind it's about fighting other youtubers while making everyone pay to even watch the fight
You will love Clickspring as well then.
A 25 minute vid and only one mid role, this man is our savior
I agree but some channels arnt like this, so i would say that this is an example of what youtube should be, not what it is. But for the most part youtube is a great community.

Do I build these?
Nope
Do I always watch these videos regardless?
Yep
Same 😂😂
+1
Do I know anything at all in real life about model making?
Nope
Am I a total snob during these videos, saying things like, "Oh, well of course, I would have done the same," or "What a brilliant idea, I'll have to keep that in mind," or "Of course he used that technique, I've seen it before, what a classic"
Obviously
Same here.
Relatable. I also watch the minecraft videos. I don't even play video games but they make some amazing things on there.
15:05 Officially the most cinematic footage of a USB installation in the universe! P.s amazing job - love your vids.
Bitplex It‘s fake. He was able to plug it in with the first try.
It was filmed backwards, he pulled it out and just ran the footage bachwards
Do a japanese Style cherry blossom with lake and japanese traditional houses
Ian Dabre I’d love this too!
I'd love this to
Oooo yess that would be cool!
Ian Dabre YES
Would be sick
Brilliant video as ever. I always learn something new and your river was stunning. Thanks!
I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 13 YEARS AND I AM STILL AMAZED!!!😍😍😍
@@lilsmokey7605 He really would, but I prefer it so much more this way. As an Australian, his work gives me super nostalgic vibes from the trips I used to take in the countryside as a kid. He always nails the tones, shapes and colours of Aussie bushland so well. The details are spot on... like the shopping trolley in the lake 😂
Statt noch nock😂👍
im the 1000th like : D
I thought this was gonna be about building an actual river
[̲̅S̲̅][̲̅a̲̅][̲̅m̲̅][̲̅e̲̅]

Can also agree..
"How simple people think" :D
I love the shopping cart great detail to every river
Sad that humans are such filthy beasts that a realistic diorama must include our garbage...
A bicycle would also work
@@CrayfishCraig a model of a garbage dump would be the challenge
Or you could put some Iphones, corpses, and guns for that extra realism
At the beginning I saw the jacket dude and was like lmfao is that Marty McFly and it actually was Marty McFly😂👌
thought the same thing as well
Yes! And then I realized he had a little Wicket too!!!!!
Apparently they are hanging out.
Me too
AbbiCat and a Star Wars reference the little Ewok

Shut up. :)

I’ll probably never build a diorama but watching these videos is addicting. It’s very neat to see how you do them and the finish look. The patience and attention to detail is amazing!
Realistic meets Realistic. An artist at work. Your talent and creativity is as expanse and boundless as the Universe. Deeply appreciate you sharing.
Trolley in the river, classic straya
ha ha yeah I couldn't resist, I was amazed the 3D printer was able to print such fine detail
@@BoulderCreekRailroad really looks amazing definitely catches what the outback looks like
That's Marty McFly! And an ewok! Hope to see some Star Wars inspired sceneries in the future!
ha ha they sure are 😉 a sci-fi scene is definitely on the list at some point!
Great! Magnificent work, I love it.
@@BoulderCreekRailroad Hanging for this one. Love to see it.
Im curious to see how you would go doing mangroves or some outback QLD/NT/Pilbara scenes, with the heavy red dirt.
Something with young Anakin and a whole lot of sand would be awesome!
@@larascasse9264 nice :D
Every time I watch one of your videos I'm left shaking my head and thinking "This dude is a damn genius"...Grass roots...amazing.
15:04 The USB key is a paid actor, it would never fit so directly in the port like that.
yeah, it went in way too perfectly -- i feel like he either tried that a few times, or he recorded himself taking it out, and reversed the footage.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lol exactly
just try it about 500 times it has to be ok at least once but as Asher R. says filmed in reverse clever very clever
And the right way up too! Hooo
Smugglers Cove model scenery layout by Geoff Nott Mike Flack has some of the model best water I have seen. The river craft are also totally top notch. The trick with the 2 part resins is to go a step above in the source chain for a better deal. That stuff is deadly expensive at the best of times. There is another single part silicon way to do water thats very cheap. A sort of Hillbilly Bunnings method.
I am useless. This is amazing. I want to be miniaturized and put inside the diorama.
I do not make stuff like this myself but these videos are so satisfying and chill
thanks mate, glad you enjoy watching
Love your videos! You should totally do a "surreal diorama" series where you experiment with your skills a little more wildly cause that would be so interesting to watch!
You are a Australian Bob Ross that makes 3D things
Omg yes 😂
Just what I thought!
Facts
Yes
He doesn't have mistakes, just happy little accidents.
Title is wrong. Should be called "hyper mega super ultra realistic..."
Should be called “literally looks more like real nature then real nature”

I find these videos perfect before sleep

At 0:12 I love how you included the actual landscape around you as it really shows how realistic your model is!
Thank you very much. Finally a video that is easy for beginners. I'm 67 and retired and decided to start modeling again. I learned quickly that its not paint by numbers as in the 60's. A have a few visions in my head but didn't know how to properly execute it until your video. I'm just learning about washes, pigments, resin, modpodge. Now I can give it a try with confidence. Thanks
Hi, I have a suggestion. You should refer paintings of great painters like Vincent Van Gogh and should try to create those paintings through your art work since you excel in it. Few examples you can work on are Vincent van Gogh's
01. The Red Vineyard (1888)
02. The Sower (1888)
03. View of Arles, Flowering Orchards (1889)
04. Painter on the Road to Tarascon (1888)
05. Starry Night Over the Rhone (1888).
Btwn love watching your videos.
Kiran Narayanan yooo thatd be so cool!
Never clicked so fast on a video before
Edit: i always enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!
lol... so glad you enjoy the videos 😉
@@BoulderCreekRailroad i really mean it 😄
Why do I read this below every video 😑
Hilarious the dumped shopping trolley! Very nice detail! Aside from the dumped shopping trolley, GREAT work!
My goodness, this is utterly stunning! The effects you achieve with your techniques are amazing, especially with your river and the ripple effects. Those banks with the roots look amazing as well!
I always learn a lot from your tutorials and your techniques are easily understood. I like the fact that you use readily available products and show the best method to use them for great results on a diorama. Thanks for making and sharing this tutorial.
whenever i get a notification from you, my day gets way better :)
keep up the great work
that's awesome mate 😄 glad you're enjoying the videos
This has to be the most detailed instruction video I've ever seen , and one to which I will return to again and again . With out doubt the Bible to me for producing water with out the usual leaks ! Thank you Luke .
I so appreciate you showing us your intakes, and how to prevent doing it. Thank you. Absolutely enjoy your videos.
I have no need of a river bank or water on my model but I was glued to your video. I was riveting and extremely well presented.
Barry.Devon
This is amazing, honestly not sure how i got here but this is truly awesome! The static grass was my favorite 😊
I liked how you showed your failures. Will help people avoid similar obstacles. Cheers to you my friend. And Cheers to more of us being brave enough to show our own failures.
Great tutorial as always. Thank you for showing what can and did go wrong. You saved me and others from a lot of issues.
Nice shout out to Kathy Millatt as well.
You sir are the second coming of Bob Ross. Never do I look so forward to a notification.
Thanks so much for the amazing compliment 😀
I’m a person who suffers from anxiety, but thanks to these videos I can have a better life while I’m watching them, they’re just too relaxing, and the work and pariente you put on them, damn this is respect, why don’t you have more subscribers. Good Luck in your future
Having trouble finding Wally? You'll find the answers here: www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/find-me-challenge.html 😃
You have got to be the best diorama builder I have ever seen!
Hi Luke, I noticed in your newer videos, you stop using the term "scenic glue". Why? 😂
Luke Towan, this is awesome!
Any way I could buy one of those figures? He’s great!
Amazing work Luke!! I love seeing Aussie’s making such great pieces!!
What happens to them all when you are finished with them?
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
Luke towan is the best
Stepping out of the real world and into your realistic miniature creations is always fantastic! Thank you!
Luke, i would just like to thank you for making these videos. you have become and inspiration to me, and have taught me so much.
Thanks.
This popped up in my recommendations and I am so happy it did! The whole video left me in awe of your talent! It was amazing seeing the whole transformation. I found it oddly relaxing to watch it all being put together. You have earned a new subscriber :)
I really love your work, my man. I watch on my 2nd screen as I edit podcasts (my full time job). It's so mesmerizing and helps keep me focused.
I've seen similar comments, but you're totally a new Bob Ross for me. I just watch the videos over and over. You're so good at what you do.
The amount of techniques involved in the production of this diorama is truly amazing. Truly amazed by your skills
Can you show us all of your dioramas and put them side by side
I never knew I needed this in my life until now
You are definitely the master of the HO models. Your attention to details does the trick to make it look real 👍
Awesome work as always, Luke. I love that trolley.
"Ooh, what's that in my notifications?".... "YES!"
ha ha... glad you're enjoying the videos 😄
@@BoulderCreekRailroad hello Mel 🙋🏻♂️much love from Mexico .
An idea:
Can you make a scene after a hurricane?
Like sticks and branches in the water, broken fences, ect?
You are an artist sir... Hats off for outstanding work
The talent, the passion, the patience...WOW!
I love the addition of Marty McFly and the Ewok
You sir...are a genius
I've never seen that before !!! Incredible !!! Bravo Luke !!!
Hi Luke, I appreciate you took the time to show the mistake bit, as well as all the other stuff that went so well. Top work!
It's beautiful
thanks mate
Honestly the people who dislike Luke’s vids are probably insane irl.
Your detail work is inspiring and amazing .. just love it!
I really liked the trick for the water ripples with the mod podge and the airbrush. That turned out primo.
Are we going to ignore the fact he hid an Ewok in there? Lol
I saw it too!😂
Endor diorama coming up in the near future I hope. Good to know Luke loves Star Wars.
Marty McFly is just taking his Ewok out for a swim.
Nice river. Very realistic.
Now we can populate it with fish and wildlife :-)
Don’t know how I stumbled on this as I’ve never researched modelling but I’ve just sat for 24mins utterly mesmerised, looks absolutely amazing!!
All I can say is WOW!!!! Awesome job!!!
You know it's realistic when you think the thumbnail and first 20 seconds of the video are photos of a real river and embankment
“Fine dirt from What I could find out side the house”
That hike has to be 20 feet deep by now!
This was really amazing! That ripple effect was awesome!
Another fantastic video. I'm going to enjoy making my way through your channel's contents that's for sure. I've only done one diorama since returning to mini painting but I can only hope to do stuff as amazing as this.
I love how there's just a random Ewok there as well
Same XD
And the human figure looks like Marty McFly... :)
I really like how you've mastered your creativity.l'm an artist as well & currently I'm building a Stable,Height 3ft,Width 3ft,Length 8ft,#12 Stalls with #12 split outside doors,#12 split inside doors,aTackroom & Office with a window & Outside door in Tackroom & Office,Doubled Front & Back doors and a Folding,Shingled A Framed Roof.
Fantastic! Very cool. I'm excited of your works!
I could watch these types of videos all day. You make it look so simple, but I'm sure it takes a lot of time and patience to become that good.
I guess that’s what Marty was going to do with Jen at the Lake
ha ha... I never even realized! 😄
If Jen was an ewok. yes...
hahaha nice!!! ☺☺
Feed her to a gator?
Amra no to go boating
Imagine him when he made projects at school. Dude must have been GODLY.
You are the best, Luke! Fantastic detailing on everything you make.
absolutely stunning!
Another awesome diorama Luke, the river looks so good that I don't know if I should grab my togs or my fishing gear... _{Spots the croc}_ Forget the togs, I'm not swimming there 😀
I love all the great little details in there, the croc, the trolley, the ewok under the tree, and hey is that Marty from BTTF? And I really love those roots, really brings the scene to life 👍
Top job (as always) 👌👍
Since you've got Marty in there, I think you should think of calling the diorama 'Clayton Ravine' 😉
_{Marty: They say Clayton ravine was named after a teacher, they say she fell in there a hundred years ago. Every kid in school knows the story 'cause we all have teachers we'd like to see fall into the ravine.}_
Yup, from Back to The Future: The Game.
Thank you KlingonCaptain, I thought the figure looked familiar 👍
OMG wow this is amazing I got to build this to be put well on a layout!!!
Really cool!! This brought back old memories from when I was a kid and I would see good dioramas like this and imagine being able to shrink my size and go into them. New sub!
amazing how much work you invest in your projects and how conscientious you build your dioramas. Bravo!
So this is how God created earth in 6 days
Yes. He used Woodland Scenics and a 3D printer.
Lol I was thinking the same thing 😂
maybe, if a random book says so .-.
Sean Wheale
Haha ikr
Yeah God watched this channel to get the tutorials on how to pull off beautiful craftsmanship.
God imagine playing a wargame on a table designed by this dude
oh! that would be amazing!
watching the grass being applied was too satisfying!
I HAVE NO WORDS...VERY ARTISTIC, GREAT WORK!
hey Luke, great video as always. I am currently building my own layout. seen as you are a source of inspiration for me and some of your first videos are of you creating your layout, i was hoping that (if it is still intact.) you could maybe make a video about how your layout ended up looking like. BTW i am also a fellow Aussie and a you-tuber. (Although i haven't uploaded any videos or content as of yet.) Again, great video and diorama.

I'm so glad I stumble upon this channel at least twice a year. It sucks me into the world of model building and I can only escape after weeks of binging all of your videos :D
the detail and finish is awesome, loved watching it.

Always amazing work. I notice you used a new static grass applicator - did your custom model die or were you just testing this new one (and if testing, do you like it better)?
Your videos are inspirational, and we are not worthy of them (but thanks, anyway!)... :)

lol... glad you liked it 😉
Thank you!! This video gave me the confidence to try this myself!

Hey, I love your work man, I’m just wondering that it will be really cool/awesome if you made a modern city, it may be hard but you can help people who are having trouble making a city. anyway wish you luck with all your other spectacular ideas
A city would be cool... I'm gonna need a bigger hobby room though 😀
Understandable 👍
It could be just a small part of a city block, something like this:
www.iknowjoshuasmith.com/work/23-temple-street/
His work is can be inspirational for anyone that want to try some urban dioramas. I just checked out Kathy Millatt's channel really quick, she also has some videos touching techniques useful for city modeling.
I wouldn't be so sure about it.
Although I’ve never actually followed your tutorials I love them they’re so satisfying and so realistic. You are very talented.
I don’t know why this showed up on my feed, but I’m so glad it did. This is super cool/unique and it looks real! Amazing.
