    Nice review! I didn’t consider the issue with a grippy wheel and knots impacting measurements and it’s nice to see that the M1 supports angled cuts! I think the M1 can be used in conjunction with a stop block pretty nicely to address the speed issue. Get an accurate measurement with the M1, move the stop block into position, move the M1 arm out of the way, cut, repeat, profit!

    Interesting tool, but I won't be needing one. It's good to see innovation and new ideas coming to fruition for woodworking. Keep 'em coming. But, for $149.00, I made an accurate stop-block system and would have had enough $$ leftover for lunch. In my opinion, a stop-block is faster and accurate enough for woodworking. After nearly 50 years in the craft, I realized that I am a woodworker, not a machinist. Thx.

    Something I didn’t catch on this until watching your video: the REEKON calibrates to the tape measure you use to mark the initial 6’. This brings to point the importance of using the same measuring tape for the entire project for accuracy.

    This would be most handy when cutting from a cut list. For most projects, I measure then cut one board at a time. The only time I cut multiples is for identical parts, which stop blocks work fine.
    But if you had a list of a bunch of cuts of different lengths, this would make very short work of it. I could see this used in a semi-production type of shop.

      When this was first being advertised as a kickstart project, it was being sold as having BT connectivity and an ap that would let one person be measuring/nailing, and another cut man on the ground. As a framer/builder/GC, I can definitely see that as being a major pro for this device, and cutting down on time and poor communications.

    I spent hours considering whether to purchase this thing during the sale. Watched several videos until I finally found someone make an actual miter cut which, in my opinion, is where precision matters most. In the end, I couldn't find a review good enough to convince me to make the purchase. This video would have made the difference. I am one of those folks with the rolling cart so this tool would be of benefit but, my plan is to eventually set up to use stop blocks. Time will tell which comes first; stop blocks or the Reekon going on sale again that will determine whether I buy one or not. Thanks, Matt, for another great video.

  • @markisom78
    @markisom78 Před 6 měsíci

    Actually I thought about buying one but I've heard about the cons from another reviewer. Dust on a miter saw is just normal even with dust collection running. So the fact that you would have to clean your board everytime you go to make a cut is to time consuming. I'm with everyone else here. My repeatable stop block system from Kreg is working good on my setup

  • @DKWalser
    @DKWalser Před rokem +5

    It looks like it could be a nice addition to a shop. In particular, it would make setting up stop blocks for repetitive cuts quicker and more accurate. Instead of running a board through the device 10 times, stopping at a reading of 5.25" to make a cut, to make 10 pieces 5.25" long; you could just use the device to measure 5.25", set the stop block to the end of the board, and make 10 cuts.

    • @DKWalser
      @DKWalser Před rokem

      @@Surmoka Not really. This tool allows you to precisely measure, and hold, the length of cut while leaving both hands free to clamp the stop block in place. Can you do it with just a tape measure? Of course! We've been doing that for decades. The point is that this tool makes the process quicker, easier, and more precise.

    • @Surmoka
      @Surmoka Před rokem

    • @Lord_zeel
      @Lord_zeel Před 6 měsíci

      @@Surmoka That's easier said than done. What he has in the video is NOT just a tape measure stuck to a table. And while you can certainly do that, actually doing it in a way that correct and accurate is going to be a fussy process. And doing what he has in the video is a lot more work and money. That doesn't mean it might not be worth the effort, but I don't think that's a valid "just do this instead" compared to a device that clamps on, has built-in calibration, then just works.

    My builder bought me one these for my job site saw. It works very well and was impressed with its accuracy. I think carpenters who do residential trim carpentry would be the perfect application for this tool. You could go pull your measurements for the entire house for baseboards and door casings and make all your cuts wayyyyyy faster than measuring every single piece with the tape measure. And especially since most trim carpenters work with primed MDF and sanded poplar, the wheel would stay clean and accurate

    • @mistrred1
      @mistrred1 Před rokem

      Side note: I’ve seen adds for a tape measure that they’re developing where you can measure and save your measurement in a cut list on the digital display on the tape measure. I think if you used that in tandem with this product, you could trim out a house significantly faster than the traditional way where you write your cut list on a scrap piece

    @731Woodworks. I like todays video, found it to be very informative. thats said I have a random follow up question, as I couldn't stop looking at your holder for your chisels, I don't remember you having that when you installed those organizer panels and wanted to ask where you got it. I would be great for my shop as I don't yet have a solution, and desperately need one. Hope you see this and thanks!

    To be fair, the clearance when folded is totally dependent on the height of the fence it's fastened to. Also, I believe the lack of batteries is due to them shipping internationally, and batteries would complicate this, so rather than 2 variants...

  • @Lord_zeel
    @Lord_zeel Před 6 měsíci

    Does it have an external power option? As something that would, in many cases, just sit with the saw at all times it seems really stupid to need AA batteries at all. That's a good option for those that need it portable, but I would like to see a DC in jack on there that would allow you to just skip the batteries. That being said, it would probably not be hard to 3D a dummy "battery" pack that replaces the door and batteries, and you just need to wire it up to a 3v power supply.

    I got this when it was on kickstarter and made many test cuts with it. One thing they bragged about and I most wanted was for it to make dead-accurate repeat cuts, but after many test cuts I found that it’s close, but not dead accurate. I found that I could generally get about as close as they do just by my own marking.
    As the video kind of shows but doesn’t flat out say, it’s pretty finicky. It can easy get out of calibration. It’s really hard to get you board pushed through to the exact length just right, and you have to have really flat clean boards.
    Overall it’s really not worth it. IMHO just use your money for a stop system that will ultimately be e faster, easier and more reliable

    One possible reason batteries are not included. Batteries are not supposed to go on airplanes. Some regions are more strict about that then others. Leave the batteries out - no issues anywhere.

    Seems like a pain especially on long stock. To take the time and run it over profiled trim. 16ft sticks or 20 ft sticks would be a nightmare. Its already difficult enough running around with 1×12 or 1/2x6 16 ft sticks. Having to slide them through the saw just seems like a major pain.

    Measuring and cutting can take the longest if you dont have a method to make it faster. Stop blocks are the way to go because you measure once set the block and your on your way. But still liked the video thumbs 👍 just because sometimes i impulse buy off of amazon 😆 have a great day

  • @peterzwyth4347
    @peterzwyth4347 Před rokem

    The calibration steps seems too complicated considering it's designed to be clamped on the saw. I think it needs to be bolted on for accuracy. This seems like it's best use case is in a shop, on a stationary miter saw, but the clamp insinuates that it can be moved on/off easily like at a job site. The clamp introduces too much error, and calibration would be required often. Same with blade kerf settings. Either make calibration steps easier or make it a more permanent attachment.
