One of my favorite moments from the series is when Knives is having her jam session with Kim on the Bass, and while the visual epicness of the scene makes it feel like Knives is this amazing Bassist right out of the gate, if you actually pay attention and listen, Knives is merely keeping rhythm with two very simple chords, and ends with a nice transition from one to the other while Kim really is the one carrying the music, but this is also very representitive of the pair of them, Knives is new and eager, but tempered, she doesn't go for anything beyond her skill level, but she plays at her skill level very well, while Kim is experienced and leads the music, but doesn't go off the leash and leave Knives behind.
It also calls into question Scott's abilities as a Bassist considering Stephen's reaction to Knives playing, but... you know... bread makes you fat.

Yeah, but I mean Scott is established as not being that good of a bassist anyway. I do think it's awesome how Knives was still pretty good, but I think the keys fit her character a lot better. She completes the band, if you think about it.

There is also a hint of foreshadowing. You can hear synth keyboard while the song is playing, which is what Knives plays in the band at the end. It's almost like they figured out the missing component to them not sucking was going to be keyboard.

While it is a very obvious point in the show, I just adore the section in the end where Scott and Ramona are convinced that they need to return to form and fight and defeat the evil exes only for said exes to completely just de-escalate and shrug off the situation via the new developments they experienced in the series. It just ties such a neat bow to their arcs and also just drives home how this series has continuously worked to show that the exes are their own people that exist outside of their relationships to Ramona and Scott. I just get so happy seeing a guy like Matthew who always gets minimized as a starter enemy who Ramona viewed as no one substantial in her past getting to be something other than the butt of a joke, and turning their dynamic on its head and so forth and so on.

And Will Forte killed it as older Scott. • @peteryang5056
      @peteryang5056 Před 6 měsíci +4

For what it's worth, I don't read the presence of Old Scott as "Scott didn't actually learn his lesson in the movie/comics." First, as Joel pointed out in the video, it's not clear that Old Scott is even intended to be "canonically" the Scott from the movie or comics. But more importantly, it kind of doesn't matter what "universe" Old Scott is from. Scott Pilgrim isn't a multiverse in the sense of the Spider-Verse or Everything Everywhere All at Once - it's more like a series of Schrodinger Boxes from which we can pluck a new timeline. What I mean is that the whole point of the open-ended ending of the comic and film is that Scott and Ramona have grown enough to *choose* to forge ahead with their relationship even though they *don't know what's going to happen.* That means things could work out, or it could just as easily mean that the relationship falls apart again. But regardless of how their relationship ultimately plays out, it doesn't undercut the fact that they looked that uncertainty in the face and voluntarily chose to accept it (which is something neither character would have been willing to do at the beginning of the film/comic).
In other words, the arc of the Scott Pilgrim film and comic isn't "main characters overcome their toxic tendencies," as it's often oversimplified to be. Instead, it's "the main characters come to *understand* that they have severe commitment issues, and mature enough to decide to make a go at it with that in mind." That means accepting that it might not work out. And if you want to fit that outcome onto a multiversal framework, just think of Old Scott as a version of Scott from a universe where it *didn't* work out. And then layer on top of that the very reasonable possibility that the relationship imploding might just well cause one of the people involved to backslide (something that happens all the time in real life). And there you have Old Scott, without "undoing" the arc of the original story.

Definitely recommend the graphic novel. Even though the anime’s direction ends up being very different, it retains a lot of the spirit of the original story and depth of the characters that the movie really speedruns. And I could see the anime continuing considering the ending and the fact that some big moments in the book could definitely still happen with the new timeline in a remixed way. Having all the exes actually still around just chilling with rest of the cast is something I’d love to see more of.

Something kind of random that I find funny is the length of time Ramona has a certain hair color. Weird but funny at least for me.

She discards her role as the manic pixie Dream girl and actually goes through some character development. And is the catalyst for all of the other characters around her to go through development. by the end of the series Every single character is a better person than they were at the beginning, unlike the movie which they actually address. Because the villain is the Scott from the movie, Who never grew and stayed and incel in his mind throughout his whole life, blaming everybody but himself for his divorce. It was actually amazing. And I love all of the character developments and the fun interactions that happened

(The comics already did that) Gideon is literally Scott

  • @charlottehhbays
    @charlottehhbays Před 6 měsíci +11

I imagined that show Gideon did perform some of the terrible acts that he did in the movie/comics. But I think the show establishes why he did those things, drew him away from the same sort of villainy while maintaining that both him and Matthew are still evil despite working through particular issues (as both seemed to enjoy being evil unlike the other exes).
I feel like In both the comics and movie Gideon’s general neglect of Ramona (the sort of pretending she wasn’t there) was Gideon mirroring how he was treated in high school, ignored by the popular kids. As soon as he found the popularity he mirrored his rejection in school by, in a sense, rejecting Ramona. Then his general sense of possessiveness and control of others, shown in the microchip/glow/frozen girlfriends situations probably also stemmed from his rejection in school. Where by not wanting to ever feel powerless and humiliated again he made sure to have control over the lives of those around him, because he lacked said control over others in school.
However I feel like the show developed Gideon away from the villainous aspects of himself, where he felt the need to have full control and power over those around him. Firstly they did that by having him be defeated by Matthew, which in many ways threw him back into a position where he was powerless and highlighted that he wasn’t all powerful and unstoppable, like he fully believed. Then by having him form rather healthy relationships with both Lucas and Julie it gave him that human connection he likely never had in school and likely never had once he gained his fame (because in that position people would do whatever he pleased). And I think that made him realise that to form relationships he didn’t have to control others or exert his power over them. Almost every relationship he formed in the comics whether with Ramona or with the exes had him in a position of complete control and power. With that gone he realised that he didn’t need that to form relationships, which was really his growth for the series. Yes he stayed evil, yes he still liked having power but generally he learnt to value others as equals, something that he never did in the comics/films (likely stemming from feeling like a lesser/loser in school). I think this growth is sort of perfectly signified with his and Julie’s chairs being on equal footing at the end, unlike when he kept Ramona beneath him.

Additionally, I loved spending more time with the other characters, (surprisingly) especially the exes. It is just a fantastic alternate take on the story, and, who knows, if we get a second season odds are we will get more Scott as well, in addition to a much more fleshed out and present supporting cast. I don’t like his insistence that adapting the original story would somehow be nothing more than “nostalgia” and what not. Is that what he says when every other series gets it’s story adapted?
The story will not have been told for a third time. The movie is a very condensed version of the comics and omits a lot of details and some characters. Getting an animated version of the full story would’ve been wonderful. It would heighten the thing we all already love, and would not have to skimp on the details.
Even disregarding all that, Takes Off is only decent for what it is. It being only 8 episodes means that we really don’t spend long enough in anything for it to have an impact like it did in the comics. This was basically our only chance of seeing the full story brought to life outside of the comics. It could’ve introduced many more people into how deep Scott Pilgrim can be, and led to a bigger fanbase. But they’d decided to do a sort of sequel instead that only fans will really get the most out of, and you already know that this’ll be the last Scott Pilgrim anything for many years to come…

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is essentially the DLC of the comics in my eyes. I also wouldn't go as far as to say that the show is still really about Scott at all. Like, yeah, the plot revolves around looking for Scott, but really only in the 2nd half that he actually gets anything substantial beyond episode 1. We didn't really get anything fresh with his character that wasn't present if not better handled in the comics until we reached that 2nd half. So it's hard to even call this a Scott story when really most of it is Remona, the exes and some side characters being fleshed out with more character stuff. More so the exes in terms of development.
If anyone really wants the authentic Scott story you basically need to see the comics or movie. It only works so well with the substantial ground work (mostly the comics) do in fleshing out Scott and characters outside the exes.

Personally this series drained me. I watched it literally moments after finishing the comic, which left me emotional. I loved the comic, the time it took to establish the characters, the deep connection. The reason why Scott's and Ramona's relationship felt meaningful is because I've seen them go through thick and thin together, help each other and grow. The series doesn't have all of that. It tries to stuff the development of a year's worth of story into a plot of events that lasted only a few days. it feels hollow and meaningless. I'm not even gonna start with this whole time travelling arc. It was a convoluted mess that suddenly concluded from one scene to another.
You can't have a big Scott Pilgrim finale after Scott and Ramona have been on ONE SINGLE DATE. In the comics they were living together before the finale.

I had never consumed any Scott pilgrim media before this came out, and over the week of thanksgiving I read all six books and watched the movie, so when I started episode one and for the third time we saw Scott ordering stuff and waiting by the door, and for the third time we saw Ramona get the blanket from her bed, etc. I was just kinda bored? Doing this subversion made it SO much better

If it was a faithful retelling, I'd be happy. It would have been so neat seeing it animated with so much added freedom.
After watching what they did, I'm very happy. The main concern, in my opinion, is that the advertising was deceptive. I don't know what the correct choice would have been because you don't want to give away any spoilers.
This series is a great addition and was a ton of fun. I was fortunate enough to be under a rock and not knowing it was happening at all. I was so pleasantly surprised and the animation is gorgeous.

I’m just happy that when Ramona fused with her future self, and became this godly apotheosis of past, present, and future, with an understanding of how and where her and Future Scott’s relationship went wrong; she didn’t just ascend to some transcendental plane of existence and leave Scott like I was worried was gonna happen.

I’m glad to see you talking about this. I already posted about this somewhere else but I don’t get the hate on the anime or the IP in general and I never will. I love the path the anime takes and it’s perfect. It didn’t need to be the comics, it needed to be its own thing and it works amazingly.

I was born in 2005, and I basicly so what grew up with scott pilgrim, and I really enjoy this version of the story it stays true to the base source and lore and yet in a way changing it to make ramona feel like a deeper more interesting character like how scott in the movie and comics basicly had to deal with his own problems and that of ramona and learning how to respect and life with himself and his mistakes making him learn how big of an asshole he was, they did a simular thing for ramona here which just works perfectly, she now has a goal to not only get scott back but also learn how to life with herself respect herself and learn to look the people she loves in the eyes and tell them she loves them and has trouble commiting to it.

Honestly, this was such a refreshing take on a reboot. I wasn't really all that interested until I saw that the story was going to be different. Ramona really deserved the narrative space this new story gave her, and it was just a great was to explore the themes and characters in a new way

Scott Pilgrim has always been a special franchise to me. I think it was the first piece of uniquely 'milennial' media I ever encountered. A story that was about and created by my generation. Something that felt true and genuine to my age group. That hit me in a special way as a teenager. And I think it was first time I read a story and really 'got' the themes and messages behind it.
I just associate every piece of it with fond memories. Sharing the books with my friends. Going to see the movie with my friends as a final goodbye before we all went off to college. Rewatching the DVD over and over with my girlfriend at the time. Staying up all night and playing the video game with my siblings over the holidays.
In the grand scheme of things, Scott Pilgrim is a pretty small franchise. One game, six comics, a movie, and now an 8 episode series. You can experience everything, absolutely everything it has to offer in a single weekend. But every single piece of it is goddamn excellent.

Finally someone feels the same way I do toward the Scott pilgrim franchise. I’m a millennial born in 1994, this price of entertainment speaks to me more and more as time passes by. To me this was the first movie to make “nerd culture” cool to me in the early 2010s.

Imagine thinking you can tell somebody what they should do with their intellectual property.
If fans who seem hell bent on beig miserable over everything that changes then maybe they shouid scrap their own money together to make their own media instead of waiting for someone else to do it. They won't they dont care.
This is what happens when you mistake having a negative opinion on media for a perosnality. *Take something randomly specific that you don't like and nake it your entire personality*

While I was hoping it would be a faithful retelling, I was also glad to get a fresh new take that was still really good in its own right. Feels like a pseudo-happy ending for the first season where Scott didn't have to off Ramona's evil exes (for now) and that Ramona learned something that her past incarnations didn't so that history hopefully doesn't repeat itself.

I love when stories grow up with their audience, sure the original is a timeless classic but this new spin is totally welcomed for me, loved seeing Ramona dealing with her past now that she has matured enough to recognize her own shortcomings.

What I liked about the anime is that they didn't change any character at all, every character feels the same, but with a little bit more depth, subverting plot is okay, but its the characters we fell in love with when we saw the movie or read the comics. The story can be different even with the same characters, and this show tells us how to do it effectively

Lol I feel like "antidote for reboot culture" is a perfect way to sum up this series. Like many others, I was hoping/looking forward to this series being a more faithful adaptation of the graphic novels. However, I agree that what we got instead was alot better and miles more profound than if we just got another regurgitated version of the source material. Personally, I felt that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was a perfect combination of the best aspects of both the graphic novel and film versions. And yes, while it is very different, I still felt that the new series still kept, at its heart, what I've personally thought the whole series has been about since the very beginning: our relationships/connections with the ones we love/care about and having the understanding and maturity to be better people for them. Cause while falling in love is great, it doesn't mean a whole hell of alot if you can't be there for them financially, mentally, and most importantly, emotionally.

This might be the third time, but there are so many moments, characters, and plotlines in the books that we've never seen in any other media.
I think the argument for being open only goes so far: If someone legitimately doesn't like the series after watching, then reflecting, and it's for a reasonable reason like mentioned above, I think it's just a difference in opinion at the end of the day.

I watched your video and Mothers Basements video about the show and I like how he put it in his review “The show is still about Scott and Ramona but instead of being the subject of the piece Scotts now the object of desire for Ramona whose more like the main subject”. They basically switched the two protagonists places and it’s still about Scott and Ramona.
I really loved the show, and while I’m not gonna say I’m not sad that I’ll probably get a 100 percent faithful retelling in animation, I think this is better, it’s a fucking awesome sequel to one of my favorite pieces of fiction. That’s great.
