    My very dear Professor Duncan, this beautiful yellow roof cottage is the most beautiful gift of all I have received in the last 20 years. You can not imagine, dear teacher, how happy I am to learn in such a clear and didactic way to make this beautiful little house. I wish you a shower of blessings for sharing your helpful teaching. A big hug, dear teacher!! I'm very grateful!! I have already asked my son to help me with measures of length and angles so that I can finally have the house of my dreams right in the palm of my hand. With love, Sir!

    Is there a reason the eaves of the roof go past the walls - could you theoretically pan the roof so that its edges line up with the walls?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 2 lety

      In theory I suppose the roof could line up with the walls, but since it's all made of card you'd probably always have cracks snd not a neat meeting of the wall and roof planes. If you want to make a house with the roof flush with the walls it would probably be better to make it using the Box mechanism (Tutorial 14), and if you want it angled on the page and not aligned with the spine you could build it on a Strap (Tutorial9).

    Thank you for sharing, I was wondering if you have any suggestion on how to make life size pop ups. I am designing a set for a local non-profit theater and would love to implement some of these ideas in to my build. Thank you and your video was very helpful.

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 4 lety +4

      I have made big pop-ups using big sheets of card (with a corrugated centre) from packaging boxes. Instead of folding and creasing I cut out panels that are the shape of each pop-up plane and then use long strips of tape to join them together where the fold would be. I suppose you could use two hinged sheets of ply wood for the base to give a really rigid foundation - but anything built onto them has to be able to squash flat.

    what kind of paper do you use ?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 6 lety +2

      For quick and easy folding as shown in these tutorials, where the card doesn't need to be scored, I use 160gsm. for more substantial models probably 220gsm. is better, but this will have to be measured and scored. The ideal card is as rigid as possible and as thin as possible. sometimes most of a pop-up could be relatively light weight card and just make it double thickness where a component needs extra strength. The size of the pop-up also dictates the weight of the card - the bigger the pop-up the heavier the card needs to be.

  • @debcallico
    @debcallico Před 5 lety

    Thank you for the tutorials. I also have your book. Your coverage of zigzag folds has left me perplexed. I can do all but the asymmetric zigzag. There are no instructions in your book, only the same theory you present here in this and the tutorial on zigzags-that it is based on parallelogram, extensions of outer panels come to a point on the gully, forming half a parallelogram-real side A opposite extended side A, real side B opposite extended side B are equal.
    Does it have to have a center fold? Are there limits to the angle made-up it always 90 degrees? Do I measure an angle, then mark the length of 1 side, turn it around and glue? Help?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm not quite sure what your difficulty is! But in answer to your specific questions...... The pop-up piece does have to have three folds - though in the case of the Asymmetric Zig-zag the middle one is not in the centre of the piece.......The angle at the spine - where the two extensions come to a point - does not have to be a right angle....... Probably the easiest way to make one would be - 1. Make the pop-up piece - measure length A on the pop-up piece. 2. Draw a straight line from the spine - this could be at 45 degrees to the spine, or it could be either more or less. 3. From where the line touches the spine measure, and mark, length A. 4. Glue the outer panel to the line - The panel should be the one that is next to side B - Make sure that the crease is above the mark. 5. Fold the pop-up piece into its closed position, put glue on the other tab, close the base so that the other tab finds its natural gluing position......... It's well worth experimenting with this mechanism -If you make a piece (Diagram 5 on page 52) and then experiment with the different positions shown i(Diagram 6 on page 53) you'll see how varied the Zig-zag shape can be. ..... Also 9.2 and 9.3 on page 54 are well worth playing with to find some quite unexpected shapes.

      @@thepop-upchannel4919 Thank you. I have been both working thru the video tutorials and the book. I used the book to make the basic zigzag and the 9.2 and 9.3, but wasn't getting the asymmetric one. I have been trying to do all of the examples you show. I am really having a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 6 lety +4

      The card I use is photocopy card - 160 gsm - If you make bigger pop-ups you will need heavier card, if the pop-ups are small you can use something like cartridge paper. The ideal is a card that is rigid and not too thick.

    Can you help me make a pop up bike?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před 5 lety +2

      A bike is quite a difficult subject for a pop-up - so I'd probably plan to do something else! A bike is mostly just two dimensional, and it's mostly made up of thin bars not flat planes. So although it should be possible it's not at all easy. I would probably use a Right-Angle V-Fold to raise a picture of a bike. Alternatively you could use the mechanism explained in Tutorial 28 as the basis - keep the triangular bit at the bottom quite small, instead of a flower stalk make it a big flat plane but cut it away to look like a bike frame - then instead of a flower shape at the top you could cut that to the shape of handlebars. But all very difficult.
