It kinda sucks though... I never get surprised. That's not literally true, I've been surprised before, it's just extremely rare, and i enjoy surprises, even if it's a bad thing. I enjoy the feeling of not being able to predict most things, the feeling from the expected of the unexpected being surpassed by a surprise, proven wrong and finally being wrong again about something i felt absolutely sure i thought i knew and understood correctly but didn't, someone showing me they actually care in ways i didn't believe they did, etc.
Surprises for myself as an INFJ is more valuable than all the money in the world. The feeling i get from being surprised is just something that comes and goes so fast and is so great, and money cannot buy it, and it will take effort on someone else's part to surprise me.

On the pro-active side, I found INFJ's to be very intuitive with design. Most INFJ's I know have elaborate plans and executions of those plans to the tee. As a result, the music, literature, graphic arts, etc., become so nuanced and unique masterpieces that it immediately stands out among the rest. It's fascinating really. And inspiring.

about the spontaneity: it's funny, when someone invites me for anything, i do think of all those things you mentioned and usually come up with some excuse to not go. but if it's my parents calling me to just go over to their place and have some coffee and nothing much, i usually have no hesitation. since i know exactly what to expect from the whole experience: i know how my parents act, how their house is and functions, what are the dynamics involved; it's really just easy to exist at their place.

As an INFJ it is unacceptable to not know or miss out important details about something, sometimes I feel like we are always preparing for an exam. For us even spontaneity should be planned.
About symbolism and ideas it is exciting to analyse and different meanings and manifestations of them in the world and it is real satisfaction when our prediction is accurate. (Told ya)
One on one conversations especially about abstract subjects like occult and philosophy etc. are like games of intellect and wit which we are sure to win and even if we don't, there will be a new concept or topic for us to delve in.

The funny thing is I am not into gambling at all and I rarely collect on bets like that because to me it is just to test my knowledge and understanding or the ability to predict the outcome rather than a way to make a profit. There is one more I would like to add, constraints. As an INFJ when I plan, predict or project, having constraints helps me a great deal because from all the variants I can imagine I can begin to rule out the ones that do not work because of constraints. Then I can separate what is left into exclusive threads, they may have a common part, but ultimately lead down very different paths. "If you turn left here, you will never be able to get back on the same path that is towards the right, make your choice.", furthermore, if the path towards the right is what I want for me in the future, but the left is tempting, I will turn right rather than left because of the undesirable outcome that will come at some point in the future.

I love how you phrased everything, it also seems very logical and the best way to go about stuff so I always wondered why people just don't think of what's gonna happen, or why something happened? and how to prevent it from happening again or do it again?, how do you not know it's pretty obvious that's I used to get a bit heated with people with no projection of the future and just intentionally hurt themselves all the time, isn't your life precious don't you want to live a good life? , then I learned people just function differently and I should help the if they can't do it themselves. I do what I don't like now because I need that more in the future than this momentary tempting option sometimes it's hard and sometimes it's easy but always rewarding and sometimes I choose the tempting option just so to be like other people and understand them more sometimes something I didn't think of might pop and I actually love that way and mostly I was right but still an experience and a lesson needed, also because of thinking that if I go a certain path I won't come back just make me stay in a comfort zone that I know is not good for me for the long run but I just can't get out until I just force myself or/and try to make the comfort zone as useful and productive as possible so I won't regret anything and feel like I've done something useful, and most importantly it's all about a happy life so if I was happy and didn't lose my time well then that's should be good enough, sorry if it was too long I loved reading your comment thank you have a nice day.

On point yet again. Asking someone a bunch of questions to get as much information as I can is my topmost priority when meeting someone new. Sometimes I get lazy and impatient and just ask them on the first meeting, "So what childhood traumas do you have?" most of the time it scares them though haha but other times they're willing to share so that makes the conversation that usually lasts for 3 hours just talking about their whole life effortless. After we finish they realize that they know nothing about me except my name, which is amusing :)

Interesting and nice you make the person feel heard. On this note I like to share my experience and approach, I learned to leave things for time, and let the person tell me without asking them, make myself vulnerable and share a bit of myself and make them feel heard and loved it's nice to see someone in their element and happy, but most of the time that leads to them to want to have long term relations and regular meetings, which I understand but don't really need or want, I just love you and hear you but I've got a life too, I can't be friends with everyone I like to really focus on one to two people as friends and that's enough, so now I only do it with my closest friend or someone I know I am not gonna meet again just to not disappoint anyone.

I don't really try hard, it's just them doing it cuz they probably sense that I'm listening to them and know that I understand them, it's like I synced with them even if the topic is something I didn't know xD ( funny, I noticed it before knowing mbti )

Growing up I think I learned foresight because it kept me safe. Growing up in a very unpredictable household I constantly scanned the environment for subtle cues of "what's to come". If i saw a pattern emerging that usually ended in a negative result, I'd take action to attempt to change it. I often wonder if I became an INFJ because of that or if I was born an INFJ & that's how I coped. Regardless, for me the need to get all the details before i decide to engage comes from that. But you're SO right Nathan, when I do feel safe- I completely embrace spontaneity- it's actually a huge relief

Tbh I think your personality comes from a combination of nature and nurture. For example, you could be born more intuitive or more sensing, more feeling or more thinking, but how those things manifest (order of cognitive functions, introverted vs extroverted cognitive functions), are probably changed by how you are raised and the environment you are raised in.
Also, honestly, I’ve noticed that a lot of INFJ’s grew up in emotionally difficult situations. Just an observation though and by no means applies to every single INFJ. But I can’t help but wonder if I might be an ENFP/ENTP or something had I not grown up in that environment.

One thing I always appreciate about your INFJ videos is that you don't leave out our analytical nature. We are often stereotyped as being overly giving and nurturing, which *can* be true (Fe craving validation), but that Ni-Ti analysis is always always running.
Someone asks "do you want to go to a party?" and my immediate internal mental response is to immediately imagine the setting, feeling, and people present. "based on who's asking, what will that feel like? Is there a strategic purpose for me to go? Will there be someone I'd like to see? What will be the expectations of me? (Do I need to bring wine?)" But of course at the end it's "Do I have enough social energy for that?"
Also appreciate never forgetting about that Se. It may be inferior but it's very much there. This coming from an INFJ who just talked about the ways they pre-imagine a simple party, but also broke up with my partner to go to an entirely other city to be with someone else ... in the same night.

I have no one to blame, but myself. I betrayed my nature and who I was and I became infatuated with my arrogant ego. She cared for me and gave me ideas on what I should do with my life. About the liking art, literature, music, yes. However, we need that Ni pull. If the thing is too out there, if the painting doesn't actually fill the Ni box, it might be very uninteresting. We like abstract, but not that much. Ni, not Ne (right).
A joke can't be funny if the outcome is completely unexpected or random.
This of course applies to the whole INFJ way of living, not only our art interests.

    • @notjohn2672

On INFJ (Ni) planning: yes, we lack spontaneity and plan automatically. But we live in the plan. Something might happen and kick you over to plan B, C, or whatever feels like it fits the best in the moment. We actually CAN be very spontaneous, at times. If we plan to be.
This also means Ni doms have a hard time actually planning. If you're a masterclass chess player, it's hard to force yourself to practice the basics like you're just learning to play. If you asked me what my plan is exactly i'd have a hard time laying it out for you. But i'll always have a rough idea of the possibilities and possible courses of action.

Give me all the details! 😆 It’s frustrating though because some people (who don’t know me very well) assume I’m asking who’s going, etc. because I want to know if it’s worth going to or not, like from a ‘is it cool enough for me to go to’ perspective, which is not it at all! I just want to be mentally prepared for anything that could happen, and know who’s going to see if I have the energy levels to deal with certain people who will make small talk all night. I feel much better about going somewhere socially if I have as much information as possible.

If we take a technical example, if the laws of physics were formed by the universe, we would see all sorts of inconsistently applied and one-off rules. As it stands we can see the laws are universal, and where there are strange exceptions we can explain these as various laws interacting in ways we didn't account for.

I will try to break down in simple terms the ways an INFJ thinks, reacts, sees the world. Because there is this view that INFJs are mysterious and live in the shadows, let’s bring INFJs (or, at least, one of them) to light. Let me first address the stereotypes that people read and use to further type themselves. There are some that are true and can be linked to functions, while others come from people’s subjective perception of the type. Which ones are true? 1. Door slamming the past. Once an INFJ is done with something/someone, they are not likely to seek the same situation, or person. 2. The wish to pack a suitcase and disappear for a while. Yup. Absolutely true. Would I do that, though? The idea does exist, but knowing that people somehow depend on me, it would feel like a betrayal to actually do it, especially once I have realized they need me to stick around. So, I would be prone to delaying the actual ‘disappearance act’, but it would eventually take place. That is for sure.
There are words that people associate with INFJs that don’t ring a bell to me. Some of those are: old soul, chameleon, mysterious. I understand where they come from, but am aware that people who read them and don’t have a deeper view on how and why they are linked to an INFJ, will confuse them with a definition of their own that is the one most likely to be true. Old soul, as people see it, is someone who has a connection to old times, the past, certain longing of it. What does it mean for an INFJ? Surprisingly different and deeper perspective on things that people translate as wise. Chameleon - ability to become like everyone else in the room and easily fit in (as seen by people). What does it really refer to? Showing empathy and understanding without the necessity to link it to oneself and one’s own reasoning and personal experience. A non-judgmental attitude. Mysterious - secretive, withdrawn (per other people’s view) vs I hold multilayered self that can seem contradictory to others and I can’t really explain it in a way that will make sense to everyone.
    1. How do INFJs process emotions internally? Through thinking and analysis. Externally, I can pin down how others feel and why with great accuracy, while I have difficulty in applying the same process internally. In fact, I show that uncertainty in the way I express myself and re-examine the truth of it. I have used phrases such as: I think I feel…, Ummmm…, confusing feelings with how they might come across,…
    2. How do INFJs explain an emotional process? By visualizing a ‘scene’ that holds a metaphorical meaning. For example, the best way I could explain my phobia was internally visualizing a painting-like captured moment. This is how I have done it: Imagine yourself standing in front of the ocean while you can see the waves coming at you creating the feeling that they have the power to sweep you away, but you find yourself unable to move because your feet are placed in a quicksand.

Loved the video and thought that it was pretty sot on. But as an INFJ, let me offer this where the topic of sponteneity is concerned. We INFJs are continuously taking in information, a lot of it uconsciously. Makes EVERYTHING IS SO *COMPLEX*. It can lead to us freezing up where, for example, decision-making is concerned. And then there are those blessed times where all those many ibnternal feeling and thinking pieces come together and we move into action on something that is deeply meaningful to us without hesitation. I love it when that happens! Wish it happened more (haha). But I also value being able to see so many facets of something. It's such an extraordinary gift to come upon someone who actually enjoys complexity as much. Most of the population unfortunately do not have the same capabilities for, and enoyment of, complexity and therefore also do not have the patience to go into deep thinking about ideas. Which is not to say they don't have their own strengths of course.

Its great to be able to tell alot about a person without talking to them, knowing your friends will always be thier for you when you need them, being able to avoid conflict without even thinking about it, having a creative mind... there's a lot of things that I love about being an INFJ-T...
However on the flip side becuse we don't trust others to see our vulnerable side easily it's almost impossible to just open up to a therapist because at the end of the day, we're just another client and need to get to know people personally before we open up.
And if you've been in an abusive household in your life it's easy to have nightmares of possible outcomes because the INFJ mind goes through every possible aspect of a situation...
That stuff keeps me up at night.
So yeah, on one hand I'm glad that I'm an INFJ but at the same time it definitely has it's drawbacks!

Anyway - I never really knew what it meant. Back before the internet, there was very little out there to explain what being a whatever meant. I wish I had all this info years ago.
