Better Than The Tissot PRX? | Movado’s New Royal Oak? | Movado SE Breakdown

  • In today's video I talk about Movado's new attempt to make an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Patek Philippe Nautilus styled watch. The integrated steel sports watch trend has been on fire recently thanks to those two heavy hitter watches. We have seen brands such as Tissot produce the PRX in both quartz and automatic movements to capitalize on this trend. Did Movado do a good job with this one? Does it rival the Tissot PRX? Those are questions I intend on answering in this video. I personally wonder when this trend will die down. I also wonder if we see huge brands such as Omega and Rolex take a swing at this styling of watch.
Thank you so much for watching this video. If you enjoyed, I would greatly appreciate it if you could like and subscribe to the channel!

I think you kind of nailed it. I just walked out of a Movado outlet and saw the SE. Although the two I saw were not the plain Movado faces...they were identical pattern to the PRX. I almost thought it was one. They offered me the automatic black dial for $683+tax down from msrp of 1800. In my head I kept thinking of the PRX and figured I would just get that instead.

I get the price point comparison, it’s definitely pricey in comparison to the PRX. But the Movado SE has been around for many years and it’s always had been a integrated bracelet watch. The case design isn’t any way related to the royal oak, not even close. And as far as knocking off the royal oak, just because it’s an integrated bracelet doesn’t mean it’s a Royal Oak knock off. The PRX is actually more of a Royal Oak knock off, especially since the case design is closely related.

I will be buying two to sit next to my President. Automatic movements get me going. Thank you for your opinion but I personally am in love with it. Great video!!!

The prx is cheap the Movado quartz can be had for 6-700 and the face is minimalistic with bold hands and museum style traces. I like the Movado it's sharp and sized right. It's a purchase consideration for me. Movado customer service is expensive but I can replace movements so if the quartz kicks on me it's not as big of a deal. Swiss quartz should last 10 yrs.

The Movado is grossly overpriced, especially in comparison to the PRX when you look at quality vs cost.

if youre "outraged" by these movado prices, then it's actually just as logically sound (even more so) to find the entirety of the swiss watch world outrageous. don't be a sheep. come up with your own opinion

I think this watch on its own can be mispriced. There is definitely a lot to be said about how expensive the switch watch industry is as a whole, but that was not my focus on this video. I appreciate your comment.

@@JackOnWrist I think Movado deserves ire as their designers are pretty awful, but they occasionally stumble on a good design. So many brands/microbrands use generic movements - so literally all you are paying for is the design. Cartier has quartz watches galore. Rolex, AP, Patek etc are far more outrageous relative to what you get. Limiting production artificially is part of the game that the swiss watch world plays, and we want them to play it. Rolex could release more watches, they don't. And we don't want them to. It's what makes them special. So price is actually nuanced. But you are right - relative to some watches, Movado is crap, but relative to others it's amazing. But there is something to be said about what Movado could have been if they had a more discerning team.

@@ptykozoon1658 I totally agree with what you said. If we are being honest, so many prestigious brands like Cartier make watches that are just as bad of a deal as this Movado is. I mean to pay thousands for a quartz Cartier (albeit with an iconic design) with a not particularly special movement is a rip off in many ways. I certainly think many brands over charge for what they are. I suppose it’s more fun to forget about that aspect of it and just buy whatever makes you happy, regardless if it’s a good value for money proposition. At least for me, that’s how i’ve been trying to think about watches as of late. It’s not so fun breaking down specs for money all the time. Cheers

@@JackOnWrist Watch reviewers like yourself are so beneficial for the industry, you influence brands. But I think one thing that's underrated in their work is the topic of the watch designers. Even though Cartier can get away with quartz without anyone batting an eye, it's largely because Cartier hasn't ever released a bad looking watch afaik. Their history of design is incredible. If Movado had the same designers, they'd be an almost completely identical brand. Another thing reviewers don't talk about much is this price dynamic. This game we play with the brands. Just look at the quality of replicas. And I think that ties in with design again. What's so important in the watch world is the beauty of a watch design. Many dismiss it as subjective, but it's more objective than we think. Thanks for letting me vent!

@@ptykozoon1658 Thank you for the kind words. You are spot on again. I think many people don’t want to admit that the difference between Cartier and Movado is not as great as they want to think. That same idea goes for many other brands. A few different decisions from a marketing, design, and specification standpoint and you have a completely different brand.

I like the Movado better but of course wait and get it for 75% off like all the rest of Movado watches that don't hold value 2yrs after release. These are selling 50% retail already. The value will continue to drop. That's when I will jump in right around $600 $700 ish
