    Creator note: in the lifespan of this video there’s always been an ongoing food debate between Turkish v Greek as both share neighboring influence. You are missing the point from a travelers perspective of celebrating delicious foods in a foreign country .
    Incidentally, A lot of well-known foods of many countries actually originates from China.
    When traveling a country I celebrate what I eat and find popular in it …that is all. I do not have time or film budget to dedicate to film food semantics. But you can always support or tip it if you want better quality.
    This video was shot in 2015. It was my very first solo travel street food video and I tried to cover as much as I could in my very short time there to give vegetarians like myself more food options and understanding than just eating salad and bread. Vegetarians want to enjoy food while traveling too

    I am a Turkish and I've tasted all those foods with different names in Turkey. Personally I think It's not a bad thing to have a food culture in common. I don't know why the Turkish people are so angry on comments. I like Greece and Greek people. A person who likes Dolma, cacık or baklava can't be that bad :)

    The word is derived from Turkish: yoğurt,[5]and is usually related to the verb yoğurmak, "to knead", or "to be curdled or coagulated; to thicken".[5] It may be related to yoğun, meaning thick or dense. The sound ğ was traditionally rendered as "gh" in transliterations of Turkish from around 1615-1625.[5] In English, there are several variations of the spelling of the word, including yogurt, and yoghurt and to a lesser extent yoghourt or yogourt.

    To be honest greeks dishes to me like, being an Italian in England and eating curry chicken pizza, instead of eating pizza in Naples. What i mean is, most of the greek dishes are the replica of Turkish dishes.
    Dolma "Dolmades"; which comes from Turkish word "dolma" which means stuffed.
    Yogurt; it means whipped, stirred, mixed in turkish because you shake your milk and mix it with the yogurt culture, and one more thing the biggest greek yogurt producer in the states is originally Turkish Kurd.
    Pide; which is type of bread baked in all of the Turkic countries and you can see this type of bread in non Turkic countries as called "Turkic bread" such as in Iran. Afghanistan, Romania, Hungary etc.
    Turkish Coffee; till the 70's the coffee drank in greece was called Turkish coffee and after that they tought if they change the name of the coffee saying "greek coffeE' they could make it greek which is just a bullshit.
    Kofte "Kefthedes"; Which literally comes from the Persian word "koftah" which comes from word "kofthan". Turks ruled Persia for almost 300 years and Persian language was the official diplomacy language of the Ottomans for 500 years, so all together 800 years Persian language was used by Turks, so they came up with this idea to call "kofta" to name their dishes which includes beating meat/vegetables to mince it and today in Iran you can only find kofte in places where the Turkic people are majority.
    Cacik "Tzatziki"; Lastly, this is the most stupid claim made by greeks saying ,"cacik" is greek. It litelrally means, "making something, without putting any effort or thought :If you look at all of the words in Turkish including the sound "c"in Turkish and in English it is "j" like "Jack", are written with "tz" in greek such as;
    Kazandtzis,Kazanatzis in greek > Kazanci in Turkish (Kazanje in English) which means a person who is responsible of looking after the cooking pots "cauldrons"
    Karatza > Karaca it is the "roe deer"
    Touloumtzu > Tulumcu means a person who pumps some king of liquid , pumper.
    Tzambaz > Cambaz a person who is not reliable or a person who sells animals
    I think this clearly shows a bit of the real side of the picture and how the greeks pretend to have their of '(fake Turkish) dishes.
    Greeks lived almost 500 years under Turkish control and it s normal to see them cooking lots of Turkish dishes but faking and claiming them to be greek is shut stupid.
    I respect the history and philosophy we got from Greeks but i dont think ancient Greeks were faking and stealing cultures from other, like they do today.

      *Levantine coffe
      Not actually Turkish at all. And Calamari is *NOT* fucking Turkish.
      And Greek cuisine is actually *NOT* a replica, you are being a complete idiot there. Just Modern Greek has *mostly* Turkish influence, but *NOT* all of cuisine.
      Are Htapodi, Calamari, Greek Salad, Tsipouro, grapes, Soupia and so a part of Turkish cuisine? Wrong. Nope. Not at all. Those are *AUTHENTIC* dishes.
      So, they are like... a gazillion dishes that are 100% native, not heavy influences or replicas.

Because greeks baking bread, cooking meat, making desert does not mean that they are greek plus greeks were settled worriers in ancient times and they have stolen lots of stuf from jews, arabs, latins, turks

      +Artemis Antoniou souvlaki orignally comes from kebap it s greek govenrment who stopped calling it kebap just before a few decades ago.
      giovarlaki- which comes from yuvarlak which means " round, to round" because of the round meatballs in the dish.

    I have seen very similar "dishes" in Turkish, Iranian and Lebanese cuisine (kinda). I'd think it's very hard to trace the exact origin of any food. It may all be Greek in origin (or not), but don't worry, most of the world thinks it's Greek regardless of what anyone claims.

    • @polymatheace
      @polymatheace Před 8 lety +4

      Holy Shit!! I'm not Turkish, you need to relax. I was basically just replying to other comments from people pissed about how Turks etc. claim all this stuff. To me, all this obsession with where food originated is a little stupid (and I agree, especially for Turks vs. Greeks, Persians, Armenians etc.). There are versions of this stuff all over the place and I think it would be very difficult to argue that they all originated (out of nowhere) in one place.

    Great video Christine! I'd like to comment though on something. Obviously lots of dishes will be similar to Turkish dishes. The Ottoman empire was a cuisine melting pot. It influenced and was influenced by what people ate in places within it's reign. Same goes for Greece. Food in general in this part of the world (like other one's) has been developing for thousands of years, with more than one cultures contributing to that. So I think there's no point really trying to find who had the very first idea of something. It saddens me when I see in videos about Greek food, Turkish folks saying that this isn't Greek at all but Turkish or even that we "stole" their food. And vice versa. What Greeks tend to eat in Greece is part of their own traditional cuisine, same goes for the Turks and those are very similar. Why try to claim it in a way that denies the influence of other people or that it's part of their own culture? As if putting a flag on it and saying "That's mine and only!". It's sad. Anyway sorry for the long comment.
    I hope you travel a lot more and wish you to taste cuisines from all over the world with their small or huge variations!

      Jimmys921 Thank you for your comment Jimmy! I absolutely agree. It's been sad, incredibly silly and definitely shocking to see such a huge controversy over a simple video done in good spirit about food and a culture. Like whoa! With popular Asian dishes, every Asian country naturally accepts the crossover. I thought wars only stemmed from religion. Apparently, food is like a religion to some!

    • @Jimmys921
      @Jimmys921 Před 9 lety +1

      GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa I'm glad you agree :-). Even though food is like a religion to some indeed, I believe the problem is one of many that stem from the collapse of the Ottoman empire which was finalized less than a 100 years ago. Further explanation though is probably out of context with your video. So I hope we accept the crossovers some day here as well. Cheers!

      +T. Kazanoğlu EVERY middle-eastern country and also some countries in north africa have the same coffee and they all call it by their country's name. Jordanian coffee, Lebanese coffee, from greece to dubai, the same technic or in hot sand (in the old days). But please, keep on thinking that that kind of coffee is turkish only.

    Guys in Athens people call souvlaki the wrapped arabic pie. The actual souvlaki is pieces of pork meat in a chopstick. They also put tzatziki in pita gyro which is wrong because you have the worm meat and the cold tzatziki together.
