You can connect another router as long as it is on one of the ports. The modem connection is reserved for a modem only.

Can I just plug the cable to the wall? Instead of a modem? Since my apt has free internet

yes, as long as your wall connection is an RJ45 you can bypass a modem providing you have an internet service.
