I am swapping a Chevy LS2 into my Mercedes SLK. I've got all the steps and am detailing how much I'm spending and how I'm doing it. I'm building the world's first LS swapped Mercedes SLK, and I'm doing it as cheaply as possible.
This is the first "how to" video in a series on the LS engine and how to do a swap. This video goes into the 5 reasons why the Chevy LS series of engines is a great choice for a swap. I looked at other options, but at the end of the day, the evidence convinced me that the LS2 is the right engine for my unique Mercedes build - something no one has ever done before!

Merch! Yeesssss! Eric, absolutely can't wait to ride in this thing!!!!! It's gonna be mental!!! I had a 4.8l in my Supra before I built the LS1 and it had no problem reving out to 7200 constantly. When I did the LS1 we put a lighter spring and clip set up on it, better push rods, and it made power past 7800 rpm. Limiter was set to 7400 just for more piece of mind. You'll be surprised what that little LS can do with very little effort. ☺
A ton of work ahead of me. The next major thing is figuring out what to do with the steering rack. I need to swap it, but it's a very odd setup with idler arm controlled from the rear. People that have swapped in 'normal' steering racks, end up have the car go left, when you turn right. Bit of a research project.
Hmmm, could maybe just change the shaft itself maybe with a small pillow block? I'd have to see it. I'm sure there's a header that will clear, could maybe custom make that side?
Seeing a GTO in that condition always makes me sad, but I am still looking forward to seeing how that Mercedes turns out!
It's definitely a bit sad, but the cost of repair would have exceeded the value of the car so insurance totaled it. Honestly though, it was fixable. I've seen far worse, but it would have taken a lot of time and some money.
I'm a tow truck driver and i work for AAA, LS engines are real reliable, it's rare to even tow an LS powered car or truck. most common thing I've seen out of all the LS cars is automatic C5 and C6 Corvettes that end up having shift cable issues at the shift lever..
Its a great engine for a reason!
That engine fits surprisingly well in that little bay. Well, not that surprisingly since the LS fits pretty much anywhere. I'd definitely look into one of those angled throttle bodies to help with hood clearance. I'm going to come help you wrench as soon as my life calms down a bit. I can't even work on my own car these days.
Steering rack is the main issue right now. I’m gonna do a bunch of research. Thanks for the offer!

Is it possible to put this engine in a car and have traction control and be able to use the original cars infotainment system to check things like oil level etc?
Is it possible to replace a corvette engine with a smaller more gas efficient engine like a 94 celicas engine?
@RevMatchTV So an LS2 that has been swapped into a step van that's been converted to a camper would be just fine? I don't need high rpm's. I just need reliability and decent gas mileage. I would think in a step van, low rpm torque would be a good thing. Is there any after market upgrades that are common for the LS2's to enhance their reliability or mpg's? Thanks! :)

It's working fine. but the feel isn't what I expected it to be. Hate to say it, but I kind of like the auto better..??? Maybe it's because I've known the car for too long with an Auto.
Interesting! Perhaps it's the transmission itself? I'm a huge manual fan personally. I know all the new cars have autos, but I like the feel of the T56. It's beefy, a little notchy and whole lot of fun. Looking at fitment issues and engine mounts this week.
possibly take the supercharger off the old engine and put it on the LS? or would that be too big for the engine bay... if so put a blower on it or have it stick out of the hood
I don’t think the sc from the Mercedes would work with this engine. I’m not too worried about power just yet. I want make sure it fits along with all the associated plumbing!
I see no problem at all for LS swaps .
The reason european cars have small engines is Taxes and gas costs , for USA or any country with no gas problems LS are best.
Have you made the measurements ? how tall wide and long it is?
maybe you know how it weight also?

I did make measurements. I don’t have them handy, but LS measurements and weight can be found with a quick Google search. Good luck with your swap!
I think you should have tested it with the exhaust manifold/headers installed...
It ran fine in the GTO. The exhaust from that car won’t fit in the Mercedes so I will have to custom fabricate headers and exhaust.

Can I LS swap my Miata? The original motor is busted. (I am joking, that is ridiculous. But I am still considering it.)
It's been done quite a few times actually. If you want to do it simply, look at Flyin Miata. They have a kit for it.
I think due to its small size, it needs an LS with the top mounted alternator like in the Corvette, but it has definitely been done before.

Nope. The headers did not fit because the steering box was in the way. I shelved the project. No one actually watched it when I was doing it.
@@revmatchtv Well ... I'm the mechanic at Cook Performance in Woodstock, NB, Canada and we mostly specialize in building RestoMods so I do a lot of LS swaps. Right now at the shop, I've got an LS7 in a '74 C10, an LS2 in a '71 Suburban, an LS2 in a '38 Buick, an LS3 in a '57 Chevy and an LT4 in a '67 Camaro .... and I'm "pretty sure" an LS can be made to fit in tha SLK! ;) ... Do you still have the car???
Now let me know if I can put a SUPERCHARGED DEMON engine in my 2014 DODGE CHARGER

There are a plethora of ls truck motors that are aluminum..
Oh you should never swap anything with an engine made by GM because that would be too unreliable. That's why mechanics with 50 year's experience only buy a Ford or a 94 Toyota Celica. XD!

If for some reason you want to ls swap a corvair, dont. Its a deathtrap at high speed.
Especially the 60-64 model

funily enough somebody made a front engine ls swap in the corvair but l imagine converting a rear engine car into a front engine car costs a whole lot more then just the engine swap
