One fact very few people,knew about during WW2 was that Canada had the 3 rd largest Navy during the war , We hear about the American , British , German , Japanese navies from war movies but never about the Canadian Navy, Canadas navy main role was convoy escorting from North America to the UK , with many many anti submarine warships destroyer escorts ,
Also, Newfoundland was attacked by German U Boats in 1942 when a German U Boat came into Conception Bay and destroyed 4 ore carriers at Bell Island. 60 ore carrier crew members were killed.
I am happy to hear that you enjoyed my mom's home town of Twillingate and where I played as a kid. Sorry you were not able to see any iceberg, and it was one of the best years for them in a few. I guess a reason to go back.
On December 12, 1985, an aircraft carrying 248 Screaming Eagles from the 101st Airborne Division crashed in Gander after takeoff. As a young Captain, I will never forget the kindness from the people of Gander and Canada 🇨🇦..😢

I’m a Canadian who was living in NYC during 911.
I had students who ended up landing in Gander but I never asked them about their experience. Then in 2019 I was taken to the show in Toronto and was blown away, since then I watch it at least once a year on Apple TV
As fulltimers and Canadian snowbirds, NL(new fun land), was our best trip ever. Our adult kids still talk about the 5 weeks we spent there. We have seen spectacular landscape all across North America, but the friendly people on the Rock make it second to none for a travel destination! Really enjoyed this series and being reminded of all the great areas as seen through your eyes. Thanks for putting it together!

I am kind of surprised that no one, and there has been a number of CZcamsrs in Newfoundland recently haven't explored the music scene, which is one of the major things that Newfoundland and Nova Scotia is know for across Canada. Groups like Great Big Sea, and Figgy Duff, and artists like Ashley MacIsaac and Sarah McLachlan as well as adopted son Stan Rogers are just the tips of the iceberg that is East Coast Music. Being people of the sea, you would probably appreciate Stan Rogers' songs like "Barrett's Privateers", and "The Mary Ellen Carter". Sea Shanty's have recently hit popular culture with The Wellerman, but most folk music fans in Canada have been singing them for generations. I have friends who have travelled to Newfoundland just to go and visit the pubs to listen to the music played there. Nova Scotia is like Newfoundland musically, and is well worth your effort to look up the traditional music scene in either area.

Loved this video. I’m a Newfoundlander and love watching visitors experience our lifestyle and welcoming arms. I saw ‘Come From Away’ for the second time just last week. Such a wonderful show. So many emotions. Many tears and laughs for sure. As for your pronunciation of Newfoundland, here’s a good frame of reference for you, “under-stand New-fun-land”. The stand and land are spoken the same way. I am a subscriber and had hoped to run into along the way but it wasn’t meant to be. Safe travels!

LOL, my mother in law grew up in NFL, married a man from NS. Marriage ended she moved to NY
On 9/11 us here in Canada opened our homes to anyone and everyone from all over the world, plus was happy to do it.
We really appreciate the kindness on that day and every day!

although Newfoundland has a number of campgrounds they encourage boondocking throughout the province.. There is also a documentary called "Come from Away" which is very good too..

I knew this history because my aunt was a flight attendant on a united airlines flight that landed there. it was 2 days after the attacks that we finally knew she alive and wasn't on any of those 4 planes that were hijacked. it still chokes me up.

We watched a documentary about Gander many years ago. I don’t remember if it was 20/20 or Dateline or another show, but it was fascinating and SO heartwarming! ❤❤❤That’s cool you got to go there!
I hate musicals but thoroughly enjoyed the Come From Away story on Apple TV Plus. Thanks for mentioning it. Come from away is an amazing tale about the friendliness of Newfoundlanders during 9/11 everyone should watch it to restore their faith in humanity.

Newfoundland the only province I have not yet travelled too!! On the bucket list of course. I do enjoy watching Americans discover Canada. Yes we are a great country whether you know it or not is irrelevant to us. We just quietly go on living. Except we do get loud during Olympic hockey games!!😮. Hi, If you liked Twillingate the drive about 15 mins to the North East to a little town called Pikes Arm and go to the Pikes Arm Lookout which is a bit of a climb but worth it. My wife's uncle built the stairs, deck and washrooms for the lookout. He just recently passed away but the original family home and his home that he built with his own hands is still there. Hope you get there and enjoy the views. Also the AUK Winery in Twillingate has a great tour and excellent wine.
We loved Nova Scotia. Didn’t make it to Newfoundland though as we were there in October and it was time to head south. Next trip we will leave earlier to explore more. Have fun there.
I used to visit Gander when I served in the Royal Air Force at Brize Norton. I was cabin crew on VC10s . We occasionally stayed a few days waiting for an aircraft. We then would hire a car to go see the rest of the island. Once we drove up to Twillingate and the Gander Loop. Another time we drove to St John's for the day.
What a great way to see the "rock".
Before I enlisted into the RAF I worked on a Scout summer camp in New York state. After the camp we went on a 10 day tour of the eastern seaboard which included DC, Portsmouth Va. and Philedelphia. The family I stayed with in DC were ex USN in fact the man was still a reserve officer. He told me he served on the Airborne Early Warning EC121 Constellation out of Argentia in Newfoundland.
Thank you for the views of the Rock, land of my grandparents. The scenery had me a little emotional.
In Pennsylvania you can start in amish towns:
Bird-in-Hand, end up in Intercourse over to Blue Ball and and finish in Paradise.

Great Video !! We have been to NS and it was a great trip but not enough time for Newfoundland so it's on our list. I love the Gander story as I read the book years ago and enjoyed seeing Gander in your video !!

I spent 3 weeks travelling around Newfoundland with my parents, the summer of ‘90, after a medical conference my Dad attended in St. John’s.
We spent a two or three days in Twillingate visiting the family of my Dad’s office receptionist, who was home visiting. I remember walking along the “busy” main street of Twillingate with her son who is my age. Talked about home, NFLD, giggled about the “hokey” music, (if we had only known Canada was 5 years away from going bonkers with the music from Great Big Sea 🤣), and 16 year old kid topics.
I got to see Fogo, and Moreton’s Harbour with binoculars at the lighthouse, nearby. (I still ☺️ when I think of that.)
By the time my parents and I left Twillingate, to continue around NFLD, if my parents had told me were moving there, and we would not be going home, I’d have been perfectly happy. (😳) Just send for our cat. :)

So much fun to see your videos. I lived and worked in Newfoundland for ten years. I lived in Gander and St. John’s. I miss the place. I’m a native Ontario gal and have been back home for a long time now. I used to visit St. John’s every year until my best friend moved close to my home here in Ontario. Best people in the world in Newfoundland. I made the best of friends and still have them.
Twillingate my home town. How I miss it. I grew up running those cliffs sides now I’m living in Ontario ugh 😑

Hi guys I live in Gander and was here during 911 , it was an interesting time. My daughter bought a vacation home in Twillingate and for nearly 20 years I was responsible for cellular and Telecommunications for the area from Gander to Twillingate and other areas lol. Too bad you didn't see the bergs , I'll post a video of ice bergs we took while fishing below

Calgary had planes land here during 9/11 and the first people to sleep in our brand new homeless shelter were people stranded because of 9/11. I have now worked in that shelter for 8.5years.

Hey hi, we lived inGander for 6 yrs. We are not Newfies lol but my husband is ex military so why we lived there, and yea 9 11 was a big thing for us even though many US don’t realize. Enjoy Twillingate all round the circle..check out that song.. called All-around the circle..thanks for the beautiful video, makes me remember places we went, as we were in Gander in 90 to 96. Ha wake up to it in summer yes but they have long very cold winters! Oh hey we are in NS!

Oh my yes how did you not here about Come From Away..hehehe I grew up 45mins east of Gander. I am so happy you made it down to Twillingate, my home away from home.:D I spent many many summer holidays in Dildo Park and yes the name is just a name for Newfoundlanders.
I can highly recommend St Anthony. We tendered in from our cruise ship and hiked there. Definitely make sure you hike Dare Devil Trail - 476 steps - but some of the most spectacular views! We saw icebergs, but while we were in Greenland. Come From Away, is an amazing show; saw it on Broadway.
Several years ago I was on a flight from Europe heading back home to the US when a passenger on our plane became very I’ll. We landed in Gander to get the person to the Emergency Room. The doctor that was on our plane actually got off with that person. Thought it was great that Gander also took in that flight in.
If a play kept Phil entertained for 2 hours it must have been one heck (I was going to use another word but it's that family channel thing) of a play. So I guess I could have used that word above because that Provincial park is a doozy. You guys are kind of following "One AdVANture at at time" through Newfoundland. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Great video. Don't often see American CZcamsrs venture across the border let alone go all the way to Newfoundland. Mostly if anybody comes up here it's Toronto or Niagara Falls or Montreal. I would bet most Americans think that's all that's here....LOL. ...Did you know in 1942 German U Boat came into Conception Bay and blew up 4 Iron Ore Carriers on the shore of Bell Island ( I was born on Bell Island but family left when I was 3 yrs old) Not many know this. 65 Iron Ore Crew members were killed. So yeah....WW2 got alot closer than we think.....Anyway, have been subscriber for a long time and still wait patiently for your video's. Great job guys.

It wasn't too after the first wave hit. We did a whale watching tour in Saint Johns and it was awesome.
My father is from Twillingate, also during WW 2,the US Coast Guard had a base Twillingate
so you came across to port aux basque and were in gander that means you drove right through my town on the trans Canada highway I'm about an hour west of gander. i only live in NL because I watch the documenteries on what happened in gander on 9/11 like Operation Yellow Ribbonwhich is where the musical comes from

Dang, we need to get back to Newfoundland. We were there last in 2019(?), also in July, and saw one iceberg out at sea on our way up to St. Anthony (gorgeous). This time we'll need to add Twillingate and a few other communities that we weren't able to get too. (Did you get to L'Anse au Meadows and the Viking settlement, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site?)
BTW, every time I hear you pronounce NEW-foundland, I mentally shout newfound-LAND in my head. lol

The people of Gander took the “airplane people” into their homes during the crisis. When I took a company of Marines to Iraq, we had a refueling layover in Gander, Newfoundland.
Hi, just wondering if you made it to the old Naval Facility at Argentia.
We did not.
On this day of September 11th in 2001 the World Trade Centre twin towers in New York were attacked by terrorists who hijacked 2 civilian passenger aircraft and crashed them into the towers. All on board lost their lives along with many who were in the twin towers and the south western district of Manhattan in New York City. It was such a horrific act it shocked and saddened the world. No one knew what would happen next. US airspace, FAA ordered all civilian aircraft to land at the nearest airport ASAP. Canada followed suit.
Gander International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada received 38 aircraft totaling 6595 passengers and crew dubbed Operation Yellow Ribbon. The people of Gander opened up their hearts and their homes to those “plane people” and “come from away”. People poured out and put in with food, extra blankets and pillows cots and beds for the designated shelters. Some even took them into their homes and fed and entertained them.
All in all 75 planes took refuge in the entire Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, fortunately many of the towns were former strategic US Military bases during the Cold War and were equipped with adequate active airports.
Amidst the chaos and the trying times came a calm from the storm and a shelter provided for those stranded passengers whom many had a language barrier. The common language here was that they experienced the sincerest kindness and hospitality for those few days that Newfoundland and Labrador in renowned for: “You be safe here buoys, dan’t cha worry” For those passengers who experienced the “Newfie” welcome, it is forever in their hearts and minds.
So glad you are in Gander Newfoundland/ Labrador, Stacey and Phil. It’s only fittin for both of you US Navy veterans to be there on this day. I’m so glad you are experiencing the “Newfie” welcome. There is no place like it on earth. Hope you come back to the “Rock” soon.🇨🇦🙏🏼🥰
What is the best time weather wise to visit Newfoundland? We did Nova Scotia the last part of June and it was good.
June and July recommended for the temps and the best shot to see whales and icebergs.

Sad but true. I’m Canadian and my son is married to an American. They reside here in Canada. She had no idea, neither did her family. Same rings true with an American friend of mine. I think at the time there was just so much going on in the U.S. it was missed and they don’t really report on things that go on outside of their own country. Too bad really because it’s a big ol’ world out there. Lots to learn.
