- "Sundown" is a song by Canadian folk artist Gordon Lightfoot, from the titular album, released as a single in March 1974.
"Sundown" reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and easy listening charts and No. 13 on the Hot Country singles chart, as well as No. 1 in Canada on RPM's national singles chart. It was Lightfoot's only single to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100.
Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. CC OOnt (born November 17, 1938) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He is often referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and is known internationally as a folk-rock legend. Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness. He is unquestionably Canada's greatest songwriter."
Lyrics:
I can see her lying back in her satin dress
In a room where you do what you don't confess
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs
She's been looking like a queen in a sailor's dream
And she don't always say what she really means
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain
I can picture every move that a man could make
Getting lost in her loving is your first mistake
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs
Sometimes I think it's a sin
When I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again
I can see her looking fast in her faded jeans
She's a hard loving woman
Got me feeling mean
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feeling better when I'm feeling no pain
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs
Sundown, you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs
Sometimes I think it's a sin
I say farewell and you will never see me again.

RIP to a true Canadian legend. Thank you for all the music and all the years of performances whether on the road or on tv. To think he had just cancelled an upcoming tour at the age of 84. He was one of the first performers in Canada to get back out on the road after concert venues opened back up again during the pandemic.
It's amazing seeing him on stage, which never happened for a child of the 60s & 79s living in Florida. Though I did have a few of his albums. My brother, an ocean tugboat captain, loved and was freaked a little I think, with The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. Sad song, but still sung by families of the dead of all ships sunk in the Great Lakes. My brother's area was the Gulf of Mexico and South to Cartagena, Colombia.
@@beverlyswartz3486 You should listen to his "Wreck of the Yarmough Castle" in the gulf area!
I was surprised when Gordon did a concert in my hometown of Northampton, MA in 2008. I first heard of him in ‘74 when “Sundown” was on the charts. I was so happy to hear him in person 34 years later! He had a full touring schedule in his 70s and was as good as ever!
No special effects just talented people making super wonderful music. Genuine and real!
RIP 😭😭
no special effects and no auto tune.....pure pure talent.... they don't make em like that anymore....tough act to follow... can't touch that ... nope..He is a musical genius!!!
You have to rest in peace now gord.ty for the music.

RIP Gordon Lightfoot. What a legend
There was nothing like it. 60's and 70's were the best.
Music and the Apollo missions were the 60s and 70s iconic memories. In medical technologies and the advent of PCs, late 1990s and the cell phones soon thereafter changed the world. Now we are worried about bad actors use AI for nefarious reasons. And they most likely already have plans to do just that.
Canadian national anthem. RIP Mr Lightfoot.
Such a brilliant gifted singer-songwriter. Your legacy will live on forever.....you will be missed by many. RIP Gordon Lightfoot 💔💜🌹🙏
Can we have the 70's back....please. The clock stops for no one. We were so blessed. Cars, music...simple special time.
RIP Gordon ❤ You left us so many beautiful songs. You will never be forgotten🙏🏻
I saw Gordon when he was 75 years old and still touring. His voice wasn't what it used to be, but we were all singing with him, so it was fine.
Like taking a ride out in a cool old unrestored car.

Lucky you! He was one of those greats whose songs I grew up with.

Rest peacefully Gordon Lightfoot. My Grandpa and I love your music, thank you ❤🕊
This song instantly takes me back to my early childhood. It's a masterpiece.
This was the first song I sang when I started my music career back in 1974. It's 03/2024 and I asked Alexa to play Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, it was like a breath of fresh air listening to his music after so many years. Wonderful memories of the 70's. RIP legend.
Gordon Lightfoot! Thank you for enriching my childhood! Your music was and is timeless!

I spent many months in Norway playing music around that time and I agree there was so much energy for music.

I love all kinds of music, this reminds me of the 70s. Best time for music! RIP Big G. UK 🇬🇧
Two thumbs up for Gordon Lightfoot wherever he is right now…I am a Mexican but I remember this song being played on the radio in Mexico an even though I couldn’t understand the language at that time the rhythm attracted me as a child …as an adult later on I can appreciate the lyrics and the deep meaning of the song…without any doubt one of the biggest composers and performers of all times !
What a wonderful song. Godspeed sir!
SUNDOWN is one of my all-time favourite songs from this fantastic artist.
Sad to hear he has died.

I’m a classic rock fan mostly of RUSH But I have this song on my playlist and on numerous occasions I’ve listen to it five times or more in a row because I just cannot get over how well it is constructed… An absolute masterpiece, and that’s saying a lot coming from someone who spent their entire life listening to Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart.
At least you are staying Canadian 🙂
Total agreement
Rush fucking rules
Rush considered Lightfoot to be the finest singer and lyricist of all time. Geddy Lee spoke of his relationship with Lightfoot and still does. Rush was also impressed with Gordons touring schedule which always lasted longer than their own.
I grew up in the hood AKA the projects as a young kid I grew up in a jazz family my dad played saxophone and flute but I listened to so much music on the radio and this was one of many songs that I grew up on I always wondered who this guy was and what he looked like he is a phenomenal performer and songwriter his song The Edmund Fitzgerald is a songwriters masterpiece thank God for this music that we can go back and listen to and reminisce on good pure music pure living
Gordy was a great story teller, RIP
RIP … Thanks for your music!

I was 15 going on 16 in September when I saw him on the Mednight Special in May of that year I love this song brings back good memories
What a voice and great songs! Thank you Gordon Lightfoot for the gift of songs you shared with us all over a lifetime. I feel so lucky that I was alive to see and hear it all.
RIP 💐
This clip is actually from the American program called The Midnight Special. Unfortunately, Lightfoot rarely made promo or lip sync performances, so these live appearances are all we had. So very unfortunate too, because one glaring omission from that time period is a video of him performing his great follow-up, "Carefree Highway".
These old videos are the next best thing to a time machine.
Wow what a fantastic live version ..love it much.... ive never heard this before 💖💖💖
Born in 56 but grew up in the 60s and was 15 when this song first came out !
Gordon Lightfoot was most amazing lyricist. I know he's alive
