    Love a tailgate. It's a bench, it's a table, a storage compartment and can serve as a rain shade/sun blocker. I remember as a kid, just sitting at the back on the tail gate and just watching the beach or the view whenever we went on camping trips. Just that nostalgia that makes me love a tailgate.

    I love my GU, but I've always been jealous of the 80-style tailgate. Now with those couple of cons you mentioned I'm not as jealous anymore! I had a pajero and I was fine with the single door a lot of the time, but with my camper trailer on I couldn't open it and that was frustrating.

    The single big rear door is a real pain if you tow anything, the can swing with real force if you are on a slope and as mentioned earlier, can sag. I’ve had all 3 alternatives and they all have pros. I love the tailgate most but the stretch into the back is hard work.

    I like Nissan patrol y61 tailgate doors due to ;
    1-The small door give you fast access and easy to open
    2-The small door when open it give the car cool looking , the Toyota is more like family car doors ( the feeling)
    3- The side Nissan door give you some privacy and windshield
    4-The one door system is large for tight spaces (e.g small home garage) , Nissan much more practical of all 3 cars
    5- Actually you can open the Nissan small door while the car is driving at ANY SPEED and throw nails under or use the gun if you at mafia business or at wars ( kidding , but true you can open the door and do things)

    Each door has their pros and cons I wouldn’t really say one is better than the other. Did you consider using a sheet of stainless or aluminium instead? It would give you the same outcome but able to put hot stuff on? Cool upgrade regardless

    As a 90 series Prado lover 8ve never really thought about the barn door being so much better . . . And I've always thought the 80 series style tailgate is awesome for the protection above and the instant table . . . And your mod has been a massive improvement for the chopping table! 👌👍😎
    A coupla years ago if modded my barn door . . . Bought a kaon 150 Prado rear table and then dot a metal fab shop to cut a 3mm sheeting ally to the same size as the door card. . . . Enlarged some door holes and installed rivnuts like you did and then screwed in the door ally card with the stainless table attached to it . . . Worked an absolute treat and makes amw awesome camp table!! 👌👍😎
    One of The best mods I've done on my rig so far!
    Besides the frifta Stockton 270 awning which nicely covers the whole rear barn door which is next level and just makes the whole barn door table soooo much more useable at anytime

    my suzuki soft top has a half height full door, i really like it but can see the benefit of a tailgate too. barn doors seem to make the rear of the car feel smaller and often they don't handle the weight of the spare tire very well so you need a rear bar anyway.

    A tip for drilling when you don't want to dent, put some electrical tape about 1cm down from the drill tip to stop it going through 👍

    • @billroach2393
      @billroach2393 Před 2 lety +3

      Or another idea is to add a length of pipe (copper/aluminium etc) of a close inside diameter, cut to the length of the drill bit less the depth of the hole you want to drill. This will make it impossible for the drill bit to accidently "catch" and pull through to dent/hole the outer skin etc. So if the drill bit is 100mm exposed from the chuck and you wanted to drill a 4mm thick hole, then a length of pipe around 95mm would be added over the bit before drilling commences.

    Be honest I've got patrol, used to own a prado, a surf and got a mate that owns a 80. So I've had the pleasure of trying all 4 and in my view the surf tail gate comes in first, 80s double tail gate second, one big swinging door third and the barn door fourth.
    Reason for the surf tail gate comes first is that 9 of ten I just had to put the windows down throw my rods, tackle bag, shopping or anything in even when with tyre the in the way and the well the tail gate awesome.
    mates 80 second is because the top window is up to take or put something in is still pretty practical like the surf. The story can change a bit with having a tyre in the way.
    the big swinging thrid door is good for a big table like the patrol (an idea I've thought of one day) and a awesome wind breaker as Patrick said but it can be a heavy to open car facing down hill or close if the car is facing a up hill and can just swing open really fast if your not exspecting it and can't open it when parked at the shops because car is behind you or towing a trailer (the winch bar, tow hitch handle or the stone guard is in the way).
    Barn door are good but fourth still have too open both door if I want to put my tackle bag in, anything els or even to open the fridge. Even if I want to add the table it stills feel small a bit claustrophobic and have to move out of the way to pull the fridge out even if I have the table open i can avoid it by having the table the flip under which makes it wider there's company that sells that but depends how you would set it up the fridge and draw.
    This is view in it and I know its long but I don't could think I could make it a 10 word sentence.

    Biggest fail for the Pajero is the hinges always fail due to the weight and good luck on opening it open in an average car park. Other 2 option are pretty much 50/50 for me I’ve got a patrol so I’m used to the barn door and my wife’s had Volvo XC90’s for the last 10 years or so excluding an Audi Q7 and both work really well.

    You missed the worst one the y62. Big door folds up. When you open it it hits the carport roof. It also hits the roller door when its up. The struts dont last that long because of the weight always pushing down on them. When the fence or the roller door is closed you cant squeeze in and open the door a crack and get inside like you can on the gq, gu its a pitta. I miss my barn doors and gullwing windows.

    patrol barn doors id prefer... i have the big mono on my zuk and they are far worse when it comes to being parked on a slope. with the patrol ones, you could just lock it, and both doors would act as a great wind break when cooking. Also you can still open the slim side if you have a trailer on where-as i cant with the mono.

    I think you’ll find Land Rover Discovery had the one big swing door long before anyone else…

    Hey Patrick, sorry to spoil your excitement but the tailgate chopping board and the little white chopping board are two completely different materials. The white chopping board is made from HDPE while the tailgate one is polycarb. Just make sure that you really the polycarb clean if you chop meats.

    Big rear door. For the win. I had a patrol and hated the barn doors. Tail gate are also not great for the reasons you have stated.

    Both are extremely capable vehicles. Personally I'd say patrol since land cruisers chug fuel and cost an arm and a leg (at least in the UK they do).

    Downside of the patrol doors is they sag when you put a big tyre on it and don't close properly
