China's Navy can build ships 200 times faster than United States: Fox News and US Navy Intel Report

  • A troubling analysis by US Navy Intelligence reveals that Chinese shipyards have 232 times the production capacity as those serving the American Navy.
The enormous disparity comes from Chinese shipyards having a solidly diversified income stream, through dominant commercial shipbuilding. The US, by contrast, has no real commercial shipbuilding industry.
This feature makes the US shipyards motivated to sell the most expensive and largest warships, and removes incentives to innovate, or to build smaller, faster warships.

If you are familiar with Chinese history, the Chinese have been building ships since ancient times and most notable was in the Ming Dynasty in the 1400s with the voyages of Admiral Zheng He (A Muslim Chinese and an Eunuch) with hundreds of ships sailing all the way to Africa and back, so this does not come as a surprise! Just a side note, if China wanted to be a Hegemonic Power back then, it could have but never did!

Not just that, the highly touted Zumwalt destroyer was a complete failure, its guns didn't work, engine broke down, cost spiraled out of control, it is canceled now. The LCS (littoral combat ship) was so badly designed that navy ordered them not to venture out of port in stormy weather! Its hauls would crack regularly. The LCS was so bad, yet the government couldn't get out of the contract. So the last batch had to be built then immediately decommissioned! You can't make this stuff up even in bollywood. Finally, the Navy now wants a next gen frigate, they learned their lesson and bought an existing design from the French navy, the FREMM. They were supposed to deliver the 1st one in 2024, except now it is delayed until at least 2030! The next gen DDGX destroyer to replace the ancient Arleigh Burke is slated for 2032! And take a look at the DDGX design pic and then compare it to the current type 55 destroyer from China. Hmm, who is copying whom? What a joke we have become. Time to give up the pretense of a failing empire and work on improving the average citizen's lives.

Thanks for the excellent report on US ship building problems. Janet Yellen said China has over capacity of ship building and the US has under capacity. So how about capacity shoring in the US for ship building ? But the cost is prohibitive as one small bag of bushing can cost US navy US$90000 whereas the it costs only US450 in China hardware store. Many latest electronic auto systems do not work and repair cost is also sky high and takes a long time to fix. The turnaround time for aircraft carrier repair is umpteen months. So serviceable navy ships in the US navy is only half of the total no. When US navy ships spreading around the world leaving a skeleton no, in South China Sea to fight the huge armada of PLA navy and expect to win is a pipe dream. How can you fight long distance naval war at the door step of the giant china and expect to win is a joke.

I have seen a newspaper article in a recent Western newspaper citing that China builds 50% of the total new ships nowadays in the world. That is an astonishing statistic. The Chinese gain more knowledge, skills and experience, and build much faster and cheaper. They can outbid any other ship building firms in the world.

  • @ZweiZwolf

China now has almost 60% of global shipbuilding orders - they have massive scale! China is now building the biggest transport ships, plus high complexity LNG and cruise ships. If a war breaks out, China can replace losses 230 times faster, so a war of attrition greatly favors China. China will replace losses and continue fighting, but the US will have to do without, suffering continuous degradation in mission capability.

So, the U.S. navy sits idle with nothing to protect. Quoting Wikipedia "In 1936, the American Merchant Marine Act was passed to subsidize the annual construction of 50 COMMERCIAL MERCHANT VESSELS which could be used in wartime by the United States Navy as naval auxiliaries, crewed by U.S. Merchant Mariners. The number was DOUBLED in 1939 and AGAIN in 1940 to 200 ships a year. American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945 (an average of THREE ships every TWO days)" It could be done!🚢🚢

The usual US defense is that China's Navy is only bigger by numbers and not tonnage. The larger US tonnage comes from the fact that it has a preponderance of aircraft carriers compared to the Chinese. However, the US aircraft carriers are - with one exception, old and at the end of their 50-year operating lifespan. The US cannot afford to replace them, as the new Ford class costs $14 billion each to build. For the cost of a single Ford class, China could easily build 10 aircraft carriers.

American shipbuilding capacity just outperformed the Japanese so significantly. Not to mention Japanese economy and population were a meagre 1/10th and 1/3rd of it respectively. IJN certainly had decisive edge with its omnipotent Kidobutai fleet and Zero fighter planes. That’s still no remedy for huge disparity between it and the US.
