  • Today my Trini mom teaches us how to make her version of provision soup, or dal soup. It's something she remembers her mom making on rainy days, and it's something that I've eaten throughout my childhood. Provision soup (dal soup) is typically made with a variety of ground provisions - root vegetables, and other vegetables that grow underground. But, it also contains green fig. Another distinctive feature is the addition of "dumplings." These are not stuffed dumplings like you might expect, rather it is best to think of them as loosely shaped blobs of dough. My mom makes hers from whole wheat flour and details the way her own mother made dumplings for soup. I hope you enjoy this family recipe, and do let me know if the comments what mom should cook next!

    Much love from Saskatchewan, Canada!
    My mom and mums (grandma) use corn on the cob as well, cut in two inch thick "slices"... but this looks like comfort to me, either way.
    I'm sick and I think this is what I need right now ❤ just watching it cooking got me feeling comforted.

    My husband's 56 year old female cousin is in hospital treating with recently diagnosed leukemia and wanted this soup for her meal after all the hospital food...ugh. She thoroughly enjoyed my efforts after she tasted it. It made her so happy. I will make this again and I thank you for keeping the traditional Trini cooking on you tube so we can all learn. Thank you Mom!

    Love your Mom. She is like my Indonesian Aunties when they gather together to prepare a communal or family fest with a big buffet. They cook in the backyard shed as the frying of fish or meat can give a lot of oily smoke. You don´t want it in the kitchen or house.😀

      You are too kind Michel! Thank you for your kind words, and I will pass them on to my mom. My grandmother had an outdoor kitchen for exactly the same purpose! Sometimes my mom will even say that it would be nice to have one so we don't "curry up the house!" Hahaha!

      I'm curious to know which ones! Is it the eddoes? They are some of my favourites. They are a bit starchy, but we also cook them for breakfast (just with onion, garlic, chilli pepper and salt) until they get soft and mushy. It's a dream! I'll pass on your kind words to my Mum :)

    • @peacku
      @peacku Před 3 lety +2

      @@maharajaneela Definitely eddoes, I may be able to find them in an Asian grocery store as I've seen taro there before, but they're definitely novelty here. But also that banana-looking green fig! I only know the round and sweet ones that are very red inside (the skin is usually green or purple), or maybe they are the same but you use them before they're ripe? It's also impossible here to find any kind of sweet potato that is not orange, which I guess you would call yams (and we call boniato or batata).
      I've yet to try but I think the beauty of this soup (please correct me if I'm saying nonsense!) is that the main flavours come from the red lentils, cumin, turmeric and alliums which are all very easy to find here, then I can substitute any starch I don't have with another starchy vegetable, I'm thinking boniato, turnip, squash or maybe even fresh corn! I'll definitely give it a try when the summer heat goes down!

    • @maharajaneela
      @maharajaneela  Před 3 lety

      You're absolutely correct! Sometimes my Mom uses the orange sweet potato. It all depends on what is available. And the beauty of this soup is that you can make it with whatever you have in hand. Sometimes people made it with whatever they could grow in their garden. I've also had very humble versions of this soup made with potatoes and carrots as the only vegetables. The veggies you mentioned would all be so delicious 😋

    This video was adorable. Loved the banter between you and your momma.
    I showed this to my Trini husband and he said it's like his mom would make too :)
    My vote for her next recipe would be - red bean soup.

    • @maharajaneela
      @maharajaneela  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much Narita! Sometimes it seems like all we do is banter! My mama and I talk a lot of sh*t too when it's just us, haha! I'm glad that you like this recipe and maybe one day you'll cook it for your husband! Now when it comes to the red bean soup, I'm going to have to do some investigating because I have never had it before. I will ask my mom if it's something she's familiar with. Besides the red bean, what else goes into this soup?

    • @devilfighter
      @devilfighter Před 2 lety +1

      I hope to cook the provision soup one day! As for the Red Bean Soup - the husband said it is just called Red Bean. Besides the red bean, there's onion, celery, spices, not too sure, but it's all cooked down real soft and flavourful.

    • @maharajaneela

    Ohhh what I would do for a nice hot bowl of dhal soup with ground provisions!! Haven't eaten it in years, it looks perfect for this upcoming week of rainy weather! Great job Aunty! My mom makes the fluffy, floatable dumplings for her dhal soup, but next time I'll experiment making it your way. And I second the request for a pelau video from Aunty!
