I’ve said it a lot recently, but it’s really felt like we’ve stopped RIGHT on the precipice of an amazing new age for animation, adult animation in particular. SO close to an amazing new era of variety in cartoons aimed at adults, only to stop just shy, thanks to cowardly studio decisions and a lack of foresight. But, suddenly, there’s a glimmer of hope, and its name is Blue Eye Samurai.

I love how in episode 5 you're watching the puppet play and you're asking which one Mizu represents, the Ronin or the Bride. Only for the end to realize that they both represent her, and it's the Onryo who she eventually becomes. Such amazing storytelling!
Ep 5 also stunningly subverts the expectations posed at the end of ep 4: the heavy influence of Kill Bill vol 1 has the audience expecting House of Blue Leaves, but it opens to this confidently produced sorrowful background to what shapes Mizu

Ep 5 is the masterpiece! 3 parallel storylines(The puppet plays, the flashback and the current event). I have never seen anything like these 3 parallel storylines before. Usually, there are only the flashback and the current event. The movement of the puppets is so amazing!
Yo, that and the build up to her using a spear weapon. I don’t know, when is the last time I verbally confirmed my love for a series, but it was episode 5.
I was so relieved to see it getting renewed. Nothing has hit me as hard as this show in a long long time.

I think making Fowler Irish was also an interesting choice. He mentions how his own family suffered under colonialism, and he's decided to make others suffer so he never has to again. And he also has that Disney thing where he's so much fun to watch be evil, and therefore it's even more fun to see him get beaten into a pulp.
He's my favourite villain this year. So entertaining & badass. I'll watch BES again just so I can quote him more.
Agreed. But they really dropped the ball on him at the end - and absolutely made a mess of his come-uppance. They depicted him as being physically invincible up till then - easily defeating both Misu and Taigen SIMULTANEOUSLY - I mean, completely rag-dolling them.
And then suddenly, a weakened, half-dead Misu - who is a slender girl! - physically defeats him.....
HOW??? No explanation.
Misu could not defeat him physically - that was WELL established. So they should have come up with some clever way for her to defeat him that did not involve a physical contest.
Anyway, I have zero interest in a second season.
@@Midwinter2 I actually agree full-on with that (probably why they kept him alive in the end- he's too cool to die), but to drop all the other amazing aspects of the show for that? Unnecessary.

I was really floored at how the show handles disability, esp in how Ringo's disability is just normalized. It's very cool to see that kind of representation.

I love how Ringo, even though he’s more of comedy relief, is still strong. During the tea meeting, Ringo poisions the guy without him realizing. He isn’t treated differently and is able to actually be his own character.
Fr it reminds me of that one mlp episode where a character is disabled but no body minds it
@@OfficialAtticus We do see a couple characters in the show that treat him differently in the negative sense, but each time it's a sort of subtle way of character expression. One major example being Abijah Fowler throwing out the C word in one of the latter scenes, which really stands to drive home what an awful person he is.
And Swordfather treats him differently from others, but in the way of a kindred spirit. The only time Ringo is asked about the origin of his disability is in a conversation with Swordfather, a fellow disabled person. It's an intimate question that would be inappropriate from anyone else.

This series is exceptional. A pretty straight-up revenge story with so much more going on under the hood, it took me completely by surprise and I’m so excited that it’s been renewed already. It just shows how big the fan base is for work like this.
It's always a relief to watch a show with such dark themes but still treats women with respect. Admittedly, I've been burnt by a lot of shows using a world hostile to women as an excuse to make them all victims and brutalise them without taking the time to make them characters.
BES never shies away from how horrible women are treated, but they're still their own people reacting to the world they live in. The contrast between Mizu and Akemi's arcs of accepting and rejecting the role of a woman to empower themselves and find what freedom they can is a great way to set up parallels between two main characters.
It started slow, but Blue Eye Samurai only got more engaging as it went on. The artistry is incredible and detailed, the culture of Edo period Japan feels real, and the characters are human in the best and worst of ways. Even Heiji Shindo and Abijah Fowler are allowed human reactions to their situations and it never diminishes what utter garbage people they are.
OMG YES EXACTLY THIS. I hate shows that just brutalize women for funzies. Its almost treated like a sort of p0rn and its so messed up. Its really annoying. I'm glad this series doesn't do that.

I was really impressed by the villain. It would have been easy to make him one dimensional but he had some depth to him. He's not what i'd call sympathetic but he is compelling.
There's a great talent in making a villain both feel completely human and utterly vile
Now u just made a great point. The better reviews of this show are in the comments, cause these videos are all saying the same thing.
He's definitely an interesting villain. I must state, though, that I stopped watching the English version during the first episode, and switched to the French version, which is a second language to me. Reason: I was finding the English voices quite irritating and unconvincing. The French version is better in two ways: (a) The dialogue is better-written, in my view - it has a more elegant, literary feel to it. (b) The voice actors are WAY better than the English ones. No doubt about that. It makes the characters a lot more convincing.
I also liked how he's portrayed as a "competent villain": He knows what he is doing, and not just with his guns.
In the beginning I was half expecting him to be the "My-Guns-are-superior-and-no-match-for-you" type of villain that finally dies at the hands of a swordman when his guns fail him.
Instead, while he think guns are overall the best "tool for killing people", he also acknowledge that sword are "more elegant", that Japan has probably the best swordsmiths and swordmen in the world and has even spent years studing them, to the point that he can handle his own with a sword against Mizu better than some of the Japanese warriors she met (mostly because he doesn't underestimate her like others do).
season 2 has been confirmed and I'm so happy! I cant wait to see Mizu start the Great Fire of London!

Everyone knows revenge stories dont end well but we can understand Mizu's desire for revenge (which almost makes her seem supernatural) because in the puppet show episode we see that the only chance at a normal happy life she had was ruined due to her being Biracial
She'll likely end up with Taigen, and have them find peace back home. It was leaning toward that if Akemi stays married to the son, and keeps a high position to make the sweeping changes she wants to make.
Revenge when done right, can have a satisfying ending. It's just that revenge narratives can also have a very easy ending (death of the main character/or still being unsatisfied and left with nothing).
The story was planting many hints of it being a larger narrative. (Her mother is more important). Her father is probably one of the others, and he'll have a more elaborate back story and dynamic, she might even find a place of belonging more in Europe.
I hope she and tiegan don't end up together. I dont have much of a reason, other than I'm just not a fan of the pairing.
Actually, I think her chance at a "normal life" was more ruined by her husband's inability to accept that a woman could beat him in a fight - he eventually accepted her mixed-race background, but he never could accept all of Mizu identity. So yeah, maybe it's more sexism (or a mix of racism and sexism) that made thus normal life impossible.
It's the same thing with the old sword maker. Mizu eventually tells him about being half white, but he still accepts her. However, when Mizu tries to tell him the entire truth, how she's a girl in reality, je completely refuses to hear her. Even if I think he knows deep down, he totally refuses to acknowledge it. Is it sexism? A mix?
@@elsafowli think it's strictly sexism, and he uses the demon insult entirely to hurt her, not because he actually thought it. There was no point prior he ever called her a demon or hinted at him thinking she's evil in anyway. The worst we ever got was "You're not as hideous as i expected."
I think his ego was just bruised, and while Mizu should have never made the backbone comment as its a sore subject, He clearly has issues with his ego and is violent when its challenged.
Two things I've wondered:
1: What if there was a 5th white person; what if Mizu's mom was white. We don't really have a solid fact that her father is the white one.
2: Will Season 2 be the hunt down of Violet, or picks up after Fowler.
When Abijah started talking about his sister, I thought we'd end up getting a reveal that she'd initially come with him to Japan and was actually Mizu's mother(pulling a game of thrones on us if you will). Clearly it's not her, but it would be cool if a similar twist happened.
My hope is that season 2 will continue the flashbacks, but this time they will cover the story of Mizu hunting down Violet.
I think Mizu already killed Violet. We know that she killed one of the 4 white men that could be her father's and in episode 6 when she confronts Abijah he mentioned something happening to Violet.
I've always had a headcannon that there are a lot more stakes in Mizu's birth than we think.
If we take what Abijah said at face value, Mizu's mother had a maid, which would point to her being nobility of some sort. Abijah also became suddenly MUCH more interested in Mizu after clocking that she was a girl and not a boy.
So I'm thinking that whoever Mizu's parents really are, it's supposed to have WAY more consequences than what we're already seeing
Fantastic show. Between Arcane, Nimona, and BES, I'm hopeful that Netflix is gonna give the support needed to keep these works of art going and thriving 💛
Just don't get your hopes up. for every one thing that's great, 10 great shows get canned. Netflix is far from good about this.

i love the revenge motive. compared to the effective but simplistic inciting incidents of revenge plots like Kill Bill or John Wick, wanting to kill your creator because you hate yourself is fucking epic; it’s it’s Freud, it’s Nietszche, it’s Paradise Lost - it has the durably compelling metaphysical drive of a biblical parable
The puppet show alone was better than a lot of entire shows
I like are how much Mizu loses and is injured while showing they are the best and most deadly. I don't feel like they have plot armor like with other protagonists. It truly works, you feel the danger.
I feel like the modern songs, and especially the Japanese cover of "for whom the bell tolls" are good choices.
It fits with the theme of the show. The modern west clashing with feudal Japan
Finally you are talking about blue Eye samurai. This was such a shockingly great series that exceeded every expectation I could have asked of it. Season 2 couldn't come sooner.
The key indicator is if it gets MORE than 2 seasons as Netflix is usually happy to pick up a series for 2 seasons unless it’s an absolute dog. Very few Netflix shows make it past season 2.
Don't forget they could try to pass off part 2 of season 2 as season 3.
The story seems like it's meant to be short; the next season, she'll go to Europe, kill one of the other guys, then maybe stretch out the show for a 3rd season and kill the last guy. Might only be two seasons.
I loved the show. When The Ronin and The Bride came on I was wondering what was going on, I want to see the epic fight against the claw army. But, at the end of that episode I just kind of sat there stunned and thought this is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I almost didn't watch it, I scrolled past the miniature on Netflix. But then my classmates started talking about it. I study 3D animation cinema and everyone was impressed on every level
I was very much not ready for the emotional gut punch I received from the Ronin and the Bride episode, its gonna stick with me for a long time I think
I appreciate you calling out episode 5 specifically in this review. It is top tier television, sitting at the very top with the likes of Ozymandias, Plan & Execution, and the Sopranos finale. Everyone should watch this show, even more people should watch that particular episode.
This show is a goddamn masterpiece. Mizu might be my favorite protagonist of all time. A tragic, hardened, flawed, human, badass. What's so unique and interesting about her revenge story compared to others, is the reasoning behind her revenge. Is it to avenge her mother? Well, no, because she meets her "mother," who is still alive, and she turns out to be a self-serving, largely uncaring woman, and ends up reinforcing Mizu's view of other people, but more importantly her view of herself. Because of her life experiences, Mizu considers herself an unlovable monster, a mixed breed who was never meant to be born. And that is what drives her revenge. She resents the fact that she was ever born, and wants to punish the one responsible for bringing her into the world as she is. It's her own self-hatred turned outward, and its just so damn tragic and beautiful and I love this story so much...
Thank god season 2 has been greenlit! The best thing netflix has put out in a LONG while. A lot of people say since Arcane, but I disagree because I think this show is better than Arcane.
I am on my third watch-through (and I've probably watched "Hammerscale" five times). It is by far the best animated series I've seen in years, and absolutely the most beautiful. It's just tremendous.
The creator went to the animation studio dressed in traditional Japanese women’s clothing to show how the clothes move on the body when it’s moving.
This is anfucking awesome show, and I was fucking flabbergasted when they played enter sandman by metallica out of nowhere, at a crucial scene. Amazing stuff

Pantheon, this, Scavengers Reign, Pluto...really a great year for animation
In a world where even live action can't follow the rules of physics (cough *Fast & Furious * cough), it's amazing they took the time to animate around actual live scenes, in order to keep it realistic. This show was an absolute gem to discover.

As for people questioning the choice of modern music i honestly think its thematically fitting that theres some modern western songs. Since the main conflict at the end of the show is "modern" western influences on traditional Japanese culture. Also i liked all the choices the training montage being a bit of a call back to Japanese inspired Kill Bill, Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie by Black Cats was just fun in that fight scenes, and the Japanese cover of Whom the Bell Tolls was bad ass too

I totally binged this in like 2 days. I liked the violence and the drama of it. It was also cool to see characters with disabilities be fleshed out and 3-dimensional. Not just the token character with xyz thing. It did suffer from one at a time bad guy syndrome, but the fight choreography was epic. And as a D&D nerd, I totally want to steal the multi level tower from the end and make it into a dungeon crawl
The fact that Critical drinker and Johnny 2 Cellos recommend this show already tells me this is a banger.
the more modern needle drops are just straight up 4th wall breaking Kill Bill references and its great, plus the Japanese cover of For Whom The Bell Tolls, its just straight up the rule of cool. it may be a little out of place, but who cares, rock on!
Especially the Kill Bill reference I believe that was so on our face in order to prevent people saying that the show lifted the fight scene. In stead they clearly state that its an homage.
It’s so hard for me to watch an entirely new show because I HATE waiting for the next season (if it ever happens), but I’m so happy that I did! This show is so complex that it’s impossible to sum up in a singular video. I look forward to your character studies!

Jane is so wonderful and envigorating with her bursting energy about the projects, the craft she’s mastering for so long. This is trully inspiring to see! And the industry insights are very cool too!
I also wanted to notice how ironic nowaday industry is to be honest. From hearing the stories of both Jane and Brian they have worked on so many things and different artistic fields (Jane mentioned her comics, clean up, character design, live-action vs animation storyboarding; Brian was talking about storyboarding, character designing, fanarts, he also wrote and illustrated his own books). And having it all come together in their leading positions where they have an upper-hand not only in the industry but also in good communication and management skills, which is sounds very multipotential to me.
And yet the multipotentiality of new artists today is still viewed as a con. Everyone wants the new artist to fit in properly to the industry standard that changes faster than a speed of light, when all most artist want is to work on their craft and be excited for the project. Gosh the irony here

that questionable needle drop is a reference to this show's biggest inspiration KILL BILL. and no review i have seen yet brings it up.
not only is the music a reference but mizu's incredible will to push on despite the odds and blinding mindset of revenge is pretty much taken from the character the bride in kill bill. and the action scenes were also inspired from that movie. i knew we were gonna get a wilhelm scream somewhere in episode 5 as i was watching it cus that episode's big fight was based on the big crazy 88 fight in kill bill.
We're getting to a point where people are not old enough to remember kill bill or are starting to forget about how influential it is. kill BIll's the bride was a strong female lead protagonist, long before that term was widely use on the internet. But not the first either.
Yes I believe that they wanted to make clear that they did it as a purposeful homage not because they wanted to copy. Well the whole ''Thtrong wamen'' thingy started less than a decade ago, but in reality there are strong women characters in movies for decades. In fact those characters are still the ones people keep in their minds, nobody will reference those recent grey pulp cardboard cut outs of Mary Sues, those talent-less committees are churning out in Hollywood now days.
This show blew me away. One of the best animated shows of the year, if not ever. The characters and their motivations were so well defined and believable, the world felt real and lived in, and the animated combat was so well done (in a behind the scenes video they showed that they filmed the combat irl then animated over it). I did not expect this show to be as good as it was.

Arcane?
Feels like Arcane has really started to slip out of the conversation and I'm starting to think Riot really goofed by releasing season 1 without being positioned to have S2 come out the following year. Despite how insanely good Arcane was, it didn't manage to breakout mainstream the way shows like Invincible did and now, so long after S1 released, it seems like the show is being forgotten about or brushed over even in discussions where it should be an obvious inclusion or point of reference.
@@troikas3353 They would have needed to delay releasing S1 by another two years for S2 to be ready soon afterwards. This is actually one of the few times I've seen a channel with an interest in top tier animation overlook Arcane.

I would love to see a deep dive into Carole & the End of the World. I got into it blind and it really sucked me into the characters. I want to see it continue until the very end of the world depicted in it. It contains such a fantastic character study as well as an incredible what-if scenario.

I saw episode 1 today. I’m so excited.
I don't think it's fair to call this show "horny" in places. Nudity is much more normalised in Japanese society and many period pieces (Western and Eastern) treat sex as a tool for negotiation on top of romance. I didn't ever find the nudity or sex in this to be particularly "sexualised". In some cases it's just a character being nude through necessity (bathing or the nude/awakening festival), other times it's woven into narrative devices, especially Akemi. I didn't ever really feel the sexual/nude scenes were for any reason other than to supplement the story (e.g. Mizu's vulnerability, Akemi establishing her control)
This has become one of my favorite adult animations. I stumbled across it by pure accident.
The animation and art is beautiful. The sound design and music choices are spot on. The writing and character development is exemplary. The setting and attention to detail, and the respect for history is laudable. BES is a truly excellent show, made well, by really talented people. Can’t wait for the next series.

This show was so emotional, the main character, Mizu, really hits home with how much life kept putting him/her down. The writing was so good, kept me on edge because it really feels like any of them could die or get wounded badly, wad so gruesome

This is an amazing show and god knows I am a difficult person to impress. Thanks to my ADD. I always seem to anticipate the outcome of any storyline, which makes most series or films a bit boring to me. This series kept surprising me. It was such a treat. Art at its finest. Love it.

I'm just curious, was anybody actually surprised at all by the reveal she was a woman? It was pretty obvious, wasn't it?
I recognized the voice actress so I figured that's where they were going with it. It was worth it for "peaches" though.
I had a suspicion throughout the episode, but then again women have voiced male characters before. Goku and Kenshin Himura come to mind.
Same. I was kind of on the fence leaning more towards yes just because her voice came off much more like a deep woman's voice rather than a man with a high-pitched voice. Also I mean yeah, suppose face wise she does look a bit androgenous, but her face does lowkey look a bit more womanly than like a man who just has soft features.
I'm more surprised that no one except for like 2 people actually picked up on it.
I thought it was obvious, but I'm not sure if it's because of something in the summary or cast list that might have tipped me off

Btw, there is a naughty scene in like every episode. So don't watch it with people that you don't want to watch that with.
Pretty sure the choice to use that particular music during the "training montage" is a reference/tribute to Kill Bill.
It made me laugh and kinda roll my eyes when I first saw it, and I saw what they were doing, but I do agree it's not for everybody and could have been avoided in favor of other, more subtle references (the duel with Tegan and the fight in the pleasure house).
I'm pausing your video half way in to go give the show a watch. This is like Charlie recommending Vinland Saga all over again. Thanks for pointing me towards another animated show!
