Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie starring Micheal Keaton was an absolute worldwide phenomenon, so naturally just a few years later a sequel was made. Not only did Keaton return as Bruce Wayne, but he was joined by Danny Devito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in what would become iconic portrayals of the characters.
Batman Returns definitely raises a few questions though. Like if you get rescued by an animal, do you automatically take on its characteristics? Did Max Shreck not clean up after pushing Selina Kyle out of his office window? Why is Batman so thrilled to be killing bad guys, and why did he rip his mask off? How was nobody supsicious of Penguin instantly bringing a baby out of a sewer on a mechanical lift?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Batman Returns! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

Its a result of the Penguin infestation that happened in Gotham back in the 60s. It was a real tragedy when you think about it. I kind of like the supernatural elements Tim Burton added to his Batman movies. If anyone didn't notice, Bruce Wayne sleeps like a bat in the 1989 Batman movie and this is the same one. He is just expanding on his own lore in Batman Returns.
Burton went off the rails in this one, making it too much of a fantasy. Batman '89 had some over-the-top moments, but was far more grounded and suspension-of-disbelief sustaining.

I love the line about Batman being in the movie. It really points out something comic book movies never seem to learn. Multiple villians in the same movie drags out the story building to such a degree that the "main hero" is barely in the last half of the movie. Now Batman Returns was a pretty good movie. But still having 3 or more main villains in the movie just to cram as many as possible always hurts the over all movie imo.
You tend to not really care about any of them, and they all feel kind of weak as they just do stuff to make the plot happen. I always think of Spiderman 3 when this issue comes up. That movie tried to do Sandman, Hobgoblin and Venom all in one movie....
Sounds like Spiderman Far Away from Home

Who's idea was that women with glasses are hideous? Why was that popular in Hollywood movies? Are those people ever seen women with glasses? They are hot.
@@ExtremeMadnessX bc it's a lot more profitable to get people to buy contacts, which need to be constantly replaced, rather than glasses, which only need to be replaced if they get damaged or one's prescription changes. When glasses are portrayed as unflattering, it gets more people to use contacts, so this is a very common trope bc the glasses industry worked their asses off to ensure that society views glasses as unattractive
@@ExtremeMadnessX I think it's because of the style of women's glasses back in the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Making lenses was expensive, so they made the lenses small and the frames thick - often "decorated", which was supposed to make them more attractive, but actually made them look worse. Also, poor eyesight is associated with age, so old women were more likely to wear glasses.

I love how "penguins living in the sewers of Gotham" doesn't raise any questions.
What? There is no sewer penguins in your city?
The Batman Returns novelization explained that the penguins were from the old Arctic World, a leftover pavilion exhibition from a Gotham World's Fair at the old Gotham Zoo. Baby Oswald was found there, presumably by the owner of the Red Triangle Circus, and taken to the Charity Home for Unusual Cases orphanage, as seen in The World of Stainboy episode "The Origin of Stainboy" (2001) episode by Tim Burton. Tim Burton snuck the Joker into The World of Stainboy episode "The Origin of Stainboy" (2001), too. czcams.com/video/6ybEPlwfvvE/video.html The owner of the Red Triangle Circus presumably adopted the Penguin boy with a contract as the star sideshow attraction and raised him in the Red Triangle Circus freak show, featured as 'Jimmy the hideous Penguin Boy - the aquatic bird boy,' exploiting the Penguin for money, as seen in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories (1997) book by Tim Burton. He'd grown to hate ordinary people and normal children. After numerous reports of missing children in several towns, police closed down the Red Triangle Circus's fair-grounds, folded the tents. However, freak-show performer the Penguin vanished before he could be questioned, as read by Bruce Wayne in the Batman Returns movie. The decrepit Arctic World pavilion became the adult Penguin's hideout. Tim Burton also explained in his Batman Returns commentary, "The old Central Park Zoo... The duck car came from the old dilapidated Zoo amusement park, and this was an old Gotham World's Fair that had been run down."
