As the Democratic Senator with the most seniority the job was supposed to go to Dianne Feinstein of California. She declined the job. Patty Murray is the next senior Democratic Senator and she accepted. Never heard why Feinstein turned it down.
She didn’t “win” anything. Since 1890 the job has gone to the Senator in the majority party who has the most seniority. The Dems control the Senate so the most senior Dem Senator is Dianne Feinstein of California. She declined the job so the Dems went with the next senior Senator which is Murray. Her yearly pay gets bumped to the same pay as Majority (Schumer) & Minority (McConnell) Leaders which means an extra $25K a year to $197,000. This is because of the additional duties she has to perform most of which she’ll rarely do if ever. (Preside over impeachment of a federal officer other than POTUS, recipient of letter from POTUS stating he’s no longer under anesthesia & can resume duties, etc)
