      I actually was unable to connect an old 10 meter rig up to my PC, so I used an old android phone with andflmsg installed to do Olivia, RTTY, PSK, and a few dozen other modes just by keying the radio and holding the phone near the speaker with low volume. It worked just fine. I've done feld hell the same way over both HF and UHF FM with just a phone and no wires.

      Your old internet phone modems, did the same thing! Remember A.O.L. dial up modems!? 😊

      I feel like it's been done before, but this is a very good implementation. It's like a QR-code that has lots of redundant info and much more info than an old barcode. Likewise, Rattlegram is similar to an old modem with an acoustic coupler, but it works with common hardware and lots of error correction.

  • @chrissewell1608

    It apparently works in VOX mode, too. Which would help.

    Yes it should be legal on both FRS and GMRS because you can send location and short text messages as long as the data burst doesn’t exceed 1 second!

    Mesh is really similar to that as far as having to use some type of smart phone for a digital user interface.
    Mesh shines in it’s ability to place tiny, autonomous repeaters where needed. They are interesting but so is what you have demonstrated here. Thank you!

    • @prizeking1647

      Mesh is a waste of money being pushed by eBay and Amazon sellers that sell the units. Waste of money gimmick. Rattle gram is 100 times better as it's free.

    My only concern was the privacy policy and data usage of the app. According to the google play store, they don't get any info from your phone, store it, or share it. So that's a good thing. Sounds like it's a good thing to try out.

    • @OGcola
      @OGcola Před rokem

      Haven't looked at the app yet so please excuse me if this is completely useless.
      There are apps like netguard that act as a sort of VPN where you can allow or forbid internet access for individual apps or system apps.
      So if the app doesn't need internet access (CZcams, Browsers etc), you can block it's access to the internet, but every other app (unless you decide otherwise) still gets access.
      Hope that helps you out

    I just tested this using VOX on the radios, connected with cables and its works great. The only problem I can see, it you are not actively checking the messages it could be a while before you will see the message. There does not seem to be any type of audible notification for when a new message comes in.
    Am I missing something here or is there a notification and I have not found it?

    As a ham, W4WFL this mode is old news. We have a suite of digital modes for radios for the past 30+ years. You can plug in a sound card into a computer and hold a mic over it and on the other side set the computer speaker going into the mic on the computer or just hard wire it between the radio to computer. It started with FEC/HF packet, PSK31, Olivia, Thor, MFSK, Contestia and many more. These modes, especially Olivia can detect and decode signals under the noise level. All these modes can be used on CB, GMRS, ham radio and etc. Some of these modes can even transmit black and white and color photos. They are available for free or small fee. I use Olivia and Thor almost everyday. It is like radio teletype but faster and much better.

  • @kerbalairforce8802
    @kerbalairforce8802 Před rokem +1

    It would also be shorter/faster if you have a chart of common words represented by strings of 3 or 4 digits. Of course, if only you and your recipient has this chart, that would be considered encryption, and would be illegal. So be sure not to do that...

  • @michaelyoung2603
    @michaelyoung2603 Před rokem

    You are using it in simplex, can it be used through the local repeaters? Anybody else on that freq, running the app will also receive that message? This is cool... just not sure of keeping things private.. although adding tones to the freq could add privacy.. is the distance of messages only as far as radio reaches? Going to check it out though for our recovery group.

    • @Iridium242

      It should work perfectly through a repeater, just need to give time for the repeater to key up then hit send on the app.
