    Some fun facts:
    - if you save Toriel's pie and eat it in Asgore's battle, it lowers his attack and defense too.
    - using the stick as an item in a battle against a dog ends it immediately (although you lose the stick)
    - in every boss fight, each of your hits start to do more and more damage after boss' HP bar reaches the mid point. A lot of people ended up killing Toriel back at the beginning by accident, thinking the fight stopped once her health was low enough (that was another way to spare enemies in random encounters), just for the blow to do way more damage than anticipated.
    - if you have missed how meta the game was up to now; that battle after Asgore's will seem like the game suddenly bashes the 4th wall with a wrecking ball...
    - Each of the hearts' attacks is based on one of each weapon you can find in the game: worn knife, tough glove, ballet shoes, torn notebook, frying pan and empty gun. Only the stick is absent (because that's yours).

You mentioned how Asgore seems like a reasonable person and how the music makes it seem like he doesn't want to fight, and I just want to talk about that from the writing side of things, because Asgore only misses out on being my favorite character in the game because a different character gets a lot of development in the true pacifist ending.
The game kinda goes out of its way to make you unsure about where Asgore stands from a morality standpoint. For starters, it misleads you by referring to him exclusively by his first name or by his title, trying to trick you into thinking that "Asgore" and "King Dreemurr" are two different people. "Asgore" is presented by Toriel and Undyne as someone who wants the protagonist dead, while the King is referred to as a big, fuzzy pushover, a kind man who is famously terrible with names. Then Undyne just outright tells us that "Asgore" and "King Dreemurr" are the same person. This tells us that King Asgore Dreemurr is viewed as a kind and pleasant man who happens to be personally responsible for the murder of six other humans, and wants the protagonist dead as well. The best way to reconcile the conflicting bits of information we have up to this point is by assuming that Asgore is kind to his people, but is also essentially racist towards humanity. The game then doesn't give you any significant information about him until New Home, where we learn his motives: He adopted the first human to fall, but after that human's death, his biological son absorbed the human's soul and went to the surface in an effort to fulfill the human's dying wish, which was to see the flowers that grew in their birthplace one final time. However, he was killed by humans, prompting Asgore to declare war.
Only then do we actually get to meet him, and his physical resemblance to Toriel(Which is because they're both part of the rare subspecies of monster known as Boss Monsters, whose souls are powerful enough to persist after death for a brief moment, the only exception to the general rule that only human souls persist after death, while monster souls are destroyed along with the body.) is used as a way of driving in the fact that he's actually a nice guy. He doesn't show any signs of malice towards the protagonist. He notes that he isn't ready for this encounter, compares it to a trip to the dentist(something unpleasant but necessary), and generally seems totally resigned. He even offers the protagonist every opportunity to turn back and delay things.(Choosing go back even prompts him to say that he considers the protagonist reading a book or going for a walk important enough to justify delaying.)
From meeting Asgore, everything about him screams that he doesn't want to do what he's doing. But then he breaks the Mercy button. While this can easily be interpreted as an act of malice designed to ensure the protagonist can't escape, that's not the case upon closer inspection. While fighting, Asgore can't even bring himself to look the protagonist in the eyes, instead looking down except when performing melee attacks with his trident. As the fight goes on, Asgore starts attacking faster, like he's desperate to get this over with. His attacks leave the protagonist at 1HP, only killing them if they were already at 1HP. He gets emotional when told to stop fighting, remembering something. Obviously, the music also plays a part in this.
And once he's defeated, he admits that his declaration of war against humanity was made in a fit of anger, and he has only stuck to it because he wants his people to have hope. He states that he "cannot take this any longer", says that he just wants to see his dead child and presumably dead wife again, and asks that the protagonist take his soul and use it to leave.
This all paints a very different picture as to why Asgore breaks the mercy button: Asgore has personally killed six other humans, and he hates himself for it.
He doesn't break the mercy button to stop the protagonist from fleeing, he breaks it because he feels he doesn't deserve mercy, and because he wants the protagonist to take his soul and leave the underground. This is further reinforced by a rather dark moment that occurs in subsequent neutral playthroughs, which I won't go into detail about because spoilers.

Another interesting thing to note is, in optional dialogue with Undyne, she comments that Asgore is a shockingly nimble fighter and that for the longest time, she couldn't even land a hit on him while sparring, because he'd just dodge out of the way. That said, perhaps Asgore is an exception. Boss Monsters live very long lives, so it's possible he was around before monsters were sealed in the Underground, and he would therefore have experience fighting humans.

There is something thematically appropriate about defeating Asgore with just 1 HP....
    Fun facts:
    - Yes. Ruins and Waterfall share the same underlying leitmotif.
    - Undertale's unique break of the Fourth Wall prior to the final boss only occurs on PC. (On consoles -- where games generally _aren't_ allowed to shut themselves off -- Undertale instead performs a "fake reset")
    - Undertale has largely three different endings: The phone call epilogue from Sans was the "normal" or "neutral" ending, while Flowey gave you a hint about the "secret" or "true pacifist" ending. Inversely, there is the "bad" or "genocide" ending where you kill every monster until there are none left to kill, which is actually a bit harder to do than it sounds.
    - Throughout the game, every time you backtrack there is a random chance that Flowey will appear (then disappear) off the edge of the screen, indicating he was secretly stalking you the whole time, waiting for an opportunity to strike (but not at you directly).
    - Various monsters have easter eggs if you perform more ACTs even after you can Spare a monster. To name just the easiest one, there's a reason Lesser Dog has _five_ different "Pet" commands....

When Undertale acknowledges itself as a GAME, you remember why it gives you the option to either fight or befriend the monsters. Throughout the game, you find weapons and armor from the other fallen humans . You have the means to kill, but why does anybody want to destroy the happy , cheerful monsters ? The castle version of Home completes the image of the warm , cozy household that Toriel introduced . A lot of games have us go out and kill everything that moves, and Undertale has taught many about that mindset

Would love to hear your thoughts at the end of it all. I was tearing all the way through Undertale (The song), and it changes from person to person, but the mirror with "Despite everything, it's still you" hits everyone differently. I'm glad you're enjoying your journey throughout this game and hope you can finally understand why it had the impact it did back when it was released.
I know you said you were going to look up the last bit, but no, you don't have to erase your save file, you just need to go back from your last save and while you're walking through the core (If I recall correctly) you'll get a phone call to tell you where to go next. From there, it's the 'real true final ending' of the game.
I consider any ending you achieve the final ending, but I'd say that Undertale in particular spreads its story bits, and you might be missing some context and story if you don't go through that final bit. That's all I'm going to say to make it as spoiler free as possible, and am also saying it because you already said you were going to do it anyways.
Amazing content as always, best of wishes.

Asgore is easily my favorite character in the game, and not just because his music is also my favorite.
Due to how little he's actually in the game, Toby was forced to shove so much character into every little thing he does. From the note on the chain to the gardening before you even meet him, as well as everything he's been described as, to the two notes that play when he realizes who you are, to the AMAZING mercy box destruction and how you can tell that he wants to fight about as much as you do. Hence why he destroyed the mercy box. He knew the second you spared him, he would drop his spear and cry. The things that are learned later only further everything.
(Spoilers for the rest of the route)
Toriel says it directly. He could have taken one soul, crossed the barrier, and gathered the rest himself. But he's a coward. He simply sits here, each time hoping another human never falls down. He's already mostly over everything that has happened, but can't bring himself to truly forgive the death of his children, no matter the circumstances. Clearly, he knows the truth as the monsnters who tell you do, but he needs something to finally break him from his hatred. And that is the player. You.

The man was too stunned to speak.
I was so excited to see how you'd react and I can say I was surprised, however, I completely understand. It's one of the most powerful moments in the game, the story of Asriel and the human, while Undertale plays is one of my favorite moments in any game. So much tenderness, sadness, grief, it's a track that with just it's first few chords sends me to tears. And your reaction to "Despite everything, it's still you" was one of the best, most emotionally sincere moments I've seen in a gameplay of this game, to say this line means the world to me would be an understatement, it's one that has helped me motivate and keep going during times of internal turmoil, cause no matter the hardships, the trials, the losses, you are still you, I'm glad it reached you, the same way as it did me back in 2015.
I also loved your reaction to Omega Flowey, cause truly, what do you even say about that lmao, it's chaotic, it's confusing, disturbing, and the music reflects that so well, and the little interludes with the souls building up this leimotif slowly, until it culminates in the sing Finale, which is this grand, heroic, powerful song that pushes the moment to new heights, I could probably break through a wall head on if you played it for me, gets me so ready for everything.
And An Ending, terrific track. Immediately one recognizes it's Ruins, but there's so much more weight to it, so much pain carried on it, a sense of tragedy. It's a fantastic way to close out the neutral route, extremely bittersweet, and a great way to end it.
Can't wait to see you do true pacifist next, thanks for the video!!

It's crazy how a game can be so much more than that. When you said it might be too personal to explain your reactions(22:00), it explained it all. Everyone has led a different life up until this moment and can shape how certain games can resonate with you. The beautiful thing about games like undertake is that everybody can have a shared experience that can yet somehow be completely different.. I played undertale when it first came out over 7 years ago and I've always come back to it time and time again. Your playthrough got me back into my "undertale mood" again. Reading through these comments has honestly been such a joy. Being reminded how much this game means to people while simultaneously being reminded why it means so much to me is a such blessing that I'm so grateful to have! I just wanna thank you for doing this, both your Undertale content, and your other content. Also, I just want to tell you that you're such a strong person, being willingly vulnerable to emotions on cam. I deeply love and respect that part of you and I look forward to seeing what you'll bring next!

  • @Zaileir
    @Zaileir Před rokem +15

The last quarter of the game has such a notable paradigm shift that it recontextualizes everything before it, making all of your interactions and outward doing that much more impactful. It's really baffling how well it's executed, especially the telling of Asriel's backstory with Undertale playing throughout. It's been among my favorite moments in gaming within the past decade easily, on par with the emotional weight of things like "The walk" in FFXIV Endwalker.
So many profoundly impactful messages in such a small, inexpensive little indie game. It's really a marvel to see, and we're lucky we get to experience such a thing in our lifetime.
Also goes to show just how much music can impact context and vise versa. Undertale is a masterpiece of OST on its own, but given context, it just swells so much.

(Spoilers for earlier in the game. This series is far past that point.)
When I originally played Undertale, the very moment I knew it was going to be one of my favorite games was when Papyrus did his special attack, the music stopped, and he goes "you're blue now, that's my attack" and the absolutely killer "Bonetrousle" starts playing, in lieu of "Nyeh Heh Heh" which had been playing up until then. The drum really underscored the moment perfectly.

God, Undertale (the track) hits much harder with the context doesn’t it. Suddenly, the tragic yet hopeful sound it conveys makes a lot of sense. The monsters have lost everything, yet they’re full of happiness and hope as they’re so close to finally being freed.
Also, rejoice as you don’t have to fight Asgore and Omega Flowey again. As Flowey pointed out, visiting Undyne and doing some other things will set you on the path for the better ending.
If this was a neutral run like your initial streams of the game were, this is where it would end. But as of now, you’re around 60-70% of the way through this route.

Then I got to Asgore's house, and I felt so bad (rip Toriel bc damage multiplier). The music and story really hit me to the point I replayed the whole game again after winning. For the a better ending.

Love coming back to videos like these and remembering what an emotional masterpiece this game is. Every main character feels so real with their deep flaws and the history that brought them there, i've been enjoying games for more than 20yrs and it's really hard for me to think of another game where the characters feel like they could be _real people.._

I admit I teared up the moment the music started to play. Undertale is such a unique game. I can't erase it from my memory to experience it for the first time again but watching your reaction was the closest I could get to it

Your reaction on the line "Despite everything, it's still you" combined with the music was perfect, that mixed with this masterpiece playing while hearing the sad backstory of two children
This game is something else man.

Throughout my time with undertale I have seen dozens of people play through the end part of the game and have dozens of times I’ve felt a flow of emotions hearing this games beautiful soundtrack to Asriel’s story in Asgore’s house, but it has been a very long time since I have felt anywhere near as much as I felt watching your experience with it. I teared up 4 times! Watching your videos on undertale music reactions across the last few months has been an incredibly positive experience for me and I know that this part of the game must have been hard with your background with this song. I would just like to thank you for sharing these moments with us, you have no idea just how much it means. I have to say I am a bit embarrassed though to say that this is the only episode I’ve seen of you actually playing Undertale, I’ll definitely have to change that. I find the dialogue at the end most especially curios. I’ve never seen someone get told to visit Undyne before, only Dr. Alphys. I’m exited to see what that entails! Once again, thank you for this. It’s so far been a wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

as someone who has been a fan of undertale for like 6/7 years and met one of my best friends because of this game
the "home" track genuinely makes me feel so emotional
it just like encapsulates all the good this game did for my life

This section is emotionally impactful for sure. Music is spot on.
Great job clearing Neutral run! Now you're rolling into the full pacifist ending which I think ties in even more wonderful music and emotions.
Crazy to think this little game can hit so hard in the feels.

Oh mannnn. We've reached the point where it hit me how emotionally invested I was in this game (still am honestly-). Overall, it's been a little silly and very fun journey, but I love how it knows how to take itself serious when it has to, no jokes, no funny interjections. Just true raw emotions, with good music to amplify it or silence to let it sink in. The mirror is always the hardest hitting part, both storywise and personally. So simple, but effectively comforting. Your reaction? Yeah, I felt that, we all did really :')
Well, hope you've been enjoying the story so far! Kinda makes you think back to all the little details scattered everywhere that was hinting to the ending and truth. IK you already finished ur playthrough, so I hope the true ending was worth it for ya! ^^

I finished Undertale awhile ago. Last year. In December. I had known of the game for a long time before finishing too, i was obsessed before i could buy it and play it myself. I’ve still been obsessed. I listen to the soundtrack so frequently, it’s ingrained in my brain. I regularly search for new Undertale content to watch. I talk about the game everyday. When i clicked on this video, i was surprised where it started. In new home. I cried. Immediately. No matter how many times I’ve seen this section, played through it, listen to the OST. This. This always makes me cry. Undertale is a great game.

Ever since I saw you reacting to the titular Undertale song, and how you hit the nail on the head with the emotional impact, I hoped beyond hope that you would play the game and get the context for that piece. To know the story of Undertale, to know what happened to the Dreemurrs. To know what happened to the first Human that fell. I'm so glad you chose to record your reaction to this.
"Despite everything, it's still you" never ever EVER fails to make me tear up. We've all been through a lot in our lives, some of us have had particularly deep cuts, some of us have barely survived the things we've been through. To be reminded that you are still you, that you are still the person you might have feared has disappeared, to see it lain out clearly that the CORE of you has made it through this entire time, has such a profound meaning. As Sans points out, you could've chosen at any time to let yourself be changed by the hardship you went through.
And instead, you've kept that tender piece of you through it all. You came out of the hardship still soft enough to care, to cry, to let the beauty of the world still move you. That is the meaning of Determination; the power to determine your own life, to choose, and to stay resolute or change as you see fit. "Despite everything, it's still you" was the strangest validation that I didn't even know I needed when I played through this game. And even now, it still hits just as hard.
Again, thank you for playing this, and I can't wait to see where things go next in your playthrough.
