In most of the US, 'servers' work for tips, 20% is the usual amount, unless they've not been good. Fact it the food is cheaper because the restaraunt doesn't have to add in labour cost. The service is usually really good because the server earns more that way. I am also 'European' and tips are common across Europe, I've been tipping people in Europe for over 50 years, so it's not new. It's quite common now to charge 10% 'service charge', in which case a tip is only applicable for extra good service. Maybe it's your age

The waiter got no responsibility for the bill and is not legally obligated to take any tipp given to him. The guest also got no legal obligation to give any tipp btw. Cut down on micro-spending like coffees, etc. - change your habits to save your household. Set up a budget and plan ahead. Eating out is more expensive in the long run than making your own food. That “there’s no clearly written indication that I can’t put a negative number” logic is something that would genuinely stand in a court of law. That’s the type of logic lawyers run with. Sue the restaurant for this was a savvy enough lawyer with that story and he’d win. It would however lead to receipts being printed with “positive integers only” at that point on, perhaps as part of a settlement deal
