Horikoshi and Kubo are proof that sometimes, it takes a few failures to find success. That's why i'm always so excited to hear that a "failed" mangaka is coming back, because thats the chance to see how they've improved since last time.
One of my favourite things about doing this little series! I love seeing how artists/authors improve over time!
Actually kubo first series wasn’t a failure he mostly ended it early
One thing I really liked that the Orca in Ouma Zoo ended up being Gang Orca in MHA.
Yeahh horikoshi reused a few designs it's really cool!!
So much of my hero anime manga and spinoffs have OZ dna all over and it’s honestly kinda a treat to find, the roots go deeper than you’d think!
I almost forgot that Horikoshi used to be an assistant to Tanaka Yasuki. Did you considered doing an axe file about Hizomi no Catoblepas or Kagijin? It took the poor guy ten years to achieve some mild success with Summer Time Rendering. So his story is probably worthy to take a closer look in the future.
Possibly yeah, I did enjoy Kagijin, but havent read Catoblepas yet, I think he's an author who might pop up in a poll for the discord readalongs at some point tbh

You know, with how Viz recently licensed Spy x Family's mangaka's previous works in English, I'm still surprised that Oumagadoki is still not officially translated in English despite how huge MHA here. Like Barrage is available in English, but they translated it before MHA was even made.
I can see them maybe doing it in the future at some point, Id personally love if more of Jumps back catalogue got an official release!

Imagine if the jim henson company makes an adaptation of oumagadoki zoo and they would included the debut of asui Tsuyu and fumikage tokoyami before they appear in My hero academia. In this version Tokoyami treats Tsuyu as his younger sister and sometimes they're in a theater pausing at various scenes referencing to Disney's The Lion King 1 1/2
I'd love to see Oumagadoki Zoo remake, theres always room to improve and I'd love to see the ideas of the Zoo worked more on.
Who knows since My Hero is ending this week Horikoshi might go and revisit some of the ideas sometime in the future!

It's a pretty big longshot, but I hope one day I can release a story with similar of impact as My Hero Academia. A majority of my work includes elements of my own personal life that I've had to deal with, like feeling like a burden to my family, overcoming a great obstacle I felt impossible, fitting in with new people in a place very unfamiliar, and bringing hope back to those who may not have much left.
Wishing you the best in that! Sounds like you've got a lot of passion you can put towards it

I loved Mama Yuyu but you might be waiting a while as I like waiting until the authors get at least 1 new series before I cover them, never say never though

Not too many I can think of and yeah Shiina does look a little bit like that summer wars character
This series was coincidentally on the mind recently.
I’m an ex fan of mha who has an encyclopedic knowledge of it that keeps up out of sunk costs
So discussing OZ is tough because it’s ass but has a certain charm and lasted long enough to the point where I’m always genuinely happy whenever I see elements of it crop up in hori’s modern work.
I never realized how much I missed them.
But this series truly is the epitome of understanding why the series was canned.
Shiina being such a shitty guy and genuinely not even running the zoo well to the point where the animals/people who are also his friends aren’t even being treated well.
It makes you feel extra bad for Hana when all responsibilities fall on her shoulder.
And makes the scene where she confronts the whale/the bear on how messed up the aquarium is come off as very tone deaf considering shiina really IS about the same.
It’s also the crystal clear evidence of why the “mha would’ve been better if deku was quirkless” Wouldn’t work.
It’s possible to make that work, but hori is more character driven the complicated fights driven, it’s not something that HE can do well. And you can really see that manifest anytime the fighting starts and aoi is involved and just can’t do anything.
Both OZ and Mha are grounded in a world where: yeah??? People with powers exist so there’s a realistic limit to how much a person can do on their own.
The designs are nice but the animal gimmick tips into some incredibly uncomfortable territory I don’t think hori was read y for.
Ntm the random cliffhanger ending that comes out of nowhere and is never resolved in it’s epilogue AFTER the series had already wrapped nicely.
The series is simply lucky it lasted long enough to at least leave an impact.
Despite disliking him heavily, the main takeaway on life mottos I got from this series is coincidentally From shiina himself. As my adult life has quickly grown darker and worse, I really can respect and see the value of not wanting to suffer for sufferings sake and “only do the fun parts” and how that childlike naive optimism and selfishness and is an earnest necessity when it comes to pursuing our goals realistically.
On some level, you sorta have to or at least should try to have fun along the way or you’d go insane.
I want Hori to rest ultimately, but I DO have a mild longing for this series and wonder where else it could go and how he’d tackle it now.
But sadly this is one of those stories that was axed for a good reason. Despite all that, I’m still morbidly curious to see how it would’ve developed

Yeah I pretty much agree with you on a lot of why it failed to leave an impact, your takeaway from Shiina is nice, and i think its definitely partially going for that but does fumble a bit just due to his character. I'd love to see some modern art done by Hori for Zoo I think thatd be cool tbh!
OumaZoo is my absolute favorite canceled manga I've ever read in Jump, and also my personal first cancelation. There are very few manga I wouldn't trade to see a more well developed form of the series now that Horikoshi has really come into his own

@@TrentinArt The fact that it had a bit of a sequel hook ending by introducing the King of Curses suggests that Horikoshi had plans for how to continue it, and I always fantasized about an arc taking place in an aviary or a fossil museum. I think Horikoshi's lack of experience was the biggest killer, since the high concept, character designs and clear love of the subject matter were all highlights for me.
Yeah, the series was ass but as a connoisseur of Hori’s work, the series was a rare breee in that it lasted just long enough to give me a brain worm.
Like beyond the art, I didn’t really like almost any of it. But it still left enough of a mark on me that I genuinely get melancholy and ecstatic anytime I see aspects of the series return in MHA
like Hana literally appears in full in an mha spin-off with a much more fitting name and it got me.
Designs are nice but the usage of the world, power system and characters were wack.
It’s a series I immediately understood why it was scrapped. But it’s also a series I’d’ve love to see continued out of morbid curiosity, maybe just hate watching idk???? Maybe just what it’s evolve into.
I ultimately want hori to rest, but I am dying to know what plans he had, if he’ll ever revisit it and generally what would he do differently now
But sadly p sure SJ owns the rights to sit on their ip and do nothing with them, as is the fate of cancelled shounen projects.
It’s ironic that despite still hating shiina, it’s clear the series made an impact because a mentality I’ve come to respect, understand and adopt myself was shiina’s philosophy of selfishly only wanting to do the fun parts.
As my life has grown colder, darker and more alone partially in pursuit of my goals and disregard of my autonomy
On some level, you gotta protect that selfish lil kid inside in order to actually get shit done. Having fun along the way makes the trials and the successes worth the while. You can lose sight of that when you fall into the spiral of minmaxing and general “suffering for the greater good”-like mindsets.

It's alright, just it being the most successful manga of the year is very weak for Shonen Jump standards
Despite Hiro inconstancy when it comes his writing (speak of a mha fan) I really enjoy his art. You can show how it grows more and more throughout his years as a mangaka. Like the recent chapters of mha looks raw as hell. Anyway great video and keep up the amazing work

What's funny is Horikoshi is one of my favorite authors but I've never read his other works I heard Zoo was fun and my homies who read them told me that Barrage was ass so 😭😅
There both alright in my book, I've read better and I've read much worse haha. I do think MHA is a step above Zoo ad Barrage tho
