- Olohega. A small, idyllic Pacific island north of Samoa and just south of Tokelau. Bought for a bottle of gin and 15 shillings an acre. Annexed to the United States. Its former inhabitants were evicted almost sixty years ago from their island and long to return.

I’m Samoan but my great grandmother was Tokelauan. I cried watching this whole video. There is an island in Samoa that sounds similar called Olosega. I hope Olohega is given back to the Tokelauan people.
This is that same island. Not to be confused with Ofu-Olosega of the Manu’a islands. Samoans call this island Olosega and Tokelauans call it Olohega
Oloega island belongs to the people of Tokelau not just one family ,I think the island should return to his people .all the best tokelauens.
I totally agree with you. Olohega don't belong to just one family. It belongs to all Tokelauans.
My dad was born in Olohenga 1938. He shared the same story with his us leaving Olohenga with his mom going to American Samoa on a boat. Grandma is Fakaofo and Papa is from Atafu😢😢

This is one of the worst injustices , unfairness and dirty dealing that has been done to a people.. Did anybody (more so the americans and the jennings family)ever stop to think that a culture and habitation existed on the Island before it was sold to Mr Jennings ? That the indigenous Tokelauans were present on the Island when all this wheeling and dealing was going on.?NZ ignored this link and dutifully accommodated the separation and thus the beginning of this heartache for these Tokelauans.Their pact / treaty with the US should have considered this historical link.The claim that the Palagi (nz island affairs officers) were heavy handed and the tendency of our matuas to comply and accept their directives so as not to offend them may have played a part in all this.I cry with you Tokelau.IT IS A CRIME !

You are absolutely correct. Tokelauans calls it Olohega aka Swains Island and American Samoans call their own island, Olosega part of Manu'a Islands.
So Nz and USA decided the fate of Tokelau?!
As has been noted before a few times, these pwople are descendants of the workers who came to the island that was privately owned by Eli Jennings tp wprk for pay. He merely housed them while they were employed there, and when they were unhappy with the pay and conditions working for him he "fired" them and provided the means for them to leave which they did. Now these people act like they were the origionial inhabitants and "natives" of the island. So my Grandparents sharecropped a sugat cane plantaion and lived there from1940 until Hurricane Donna in the 60s when thier house was destroyed and they had to leave. So by this logic the plantaion lands belong to me now?? Not justifiable by any traditions or laws. Sorry...
Sorry about the punctuation and spelling mistakes as I had hurt my left hand and was finger pecking the comment. And while I do indeed feel sorry for the children at the time having to leave the only home they had ever known, it was indeed "just business". Unfortunate and sad indeed but not "being thrown off thier land by some distant government" situation.
Before swains island was a privately owned island in the form of western colonization,before a white man came and made slaves out of the natives and tricked them into what they don't understand as seen all around the World,it was called olohenga and inhabited by the traditional inhabitants the tokelauan people.who have connection to the land through their ancestors,song,dance,location of settlement, religion,tui tokelau the stone that used to be worshipped by tokelauans before Christianity was introduced is on each of the four islands of tokelau.there is 6907 miles between olohenga and the white house in Washington DC that holds these man made constitutional laws and legislations that creates their own made up right say that olohenga is property of the United states government.now the distance between olohenga and fakaofo is only a short geological distance of 116miles.olohenga is a turtle that has been snatched by the American bald eagle.tokelau ke ola tokelau ki mua..atafu 🇹🇰 nukunonu 🇹🇰fakaofo 🇹🇰 olohenga 🇹🇰 may she return one day.
