What fossil plants tell us about climate - Museum Evolution

  • Did you know that there used to be a volcano where Chemnitz is today? This buried an entire forest under itself during an eruption. Good for us, because this way a whole ecosystem was preserved! Because the fossils are preserved in three dimensions, we can reconstruct entire plants. With the help of state-of-the-art microscopes, we can even deduce how much water they evaporated - and from that, in turn, how much CO2 was in the atmosphere. This means that with the help of fossilized plants, we can reconstruct nothing less than the climate millions of years ago.
To understand how the interrelationships on our earth work, what control mechanisms it has and how it can counteract them. That's what we're researching at the Museum für Naturkunde - and sharing our findings with you, so that in turn new ideas can bubble up. That's another reason we're tapping into and developing our collection, and later making it available to the world through our data portal. Who knows what questions it will answer for us in the future?
A film team accompanies the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin on its way into the future. On CZcams, you can become part of our #MuseumsEvolution!
The earth is changing. Every second. For 4.56 billion years. But this change is going too fast lately! This is shown by the speed of species extinction and climate change.
We are making the museum fit for new challenges, also structurally. As a place where, in the future, a million visitors a year will be able to engage in an exchange about the preservation of our natural foundations of life. And as a place where more than 200 scientists are already researching life and the earth. We are catapulting the 30 million objects in our collection into the future - analog and digital. For all of us! So that we can work together on solutions - for nature and the cohesion of society.
