  • Find out what a Chevy 2500 HD with the 6.0L Gas engine gets pulling an open trailer with Burnie the burnout truck on the back from Colorado to Florida! This trip was at least 1833 Miles so this definitely gives a great Idea of fuel mileage if you plan to tow something with one of these trucks across country!

    My brothers, cousin and I drove from Pennsylvania to central Florida in my brothers 2017 GMC 3500 crew cab with a utility body, 6.0, 4.10 gears with a 27’ camper hooked up. Averaged about 8-9 mpg the whole way. Just a few weeks ago, We used a Chevy express 3500 extended chassis with a 6.0, 3.48(?) gears and a new 34’ camper to do the same trip. Got the same fuel mileage. So no matter what, with a 6.0 and a decent amount of weight behind it, you’re gonna get around 10mpg.

    I did all the math when I bought my 2010 2500HD crewcab longbed 4x4 and I just couldn't make the 10K upcharge for the DMAX justified. I walked out of the dealership for $34K with my WT package and even with 140K miles on the odometer, I am still money ahead of the initial 10K upcharge.
    My oil changes are around $40 DIY which figures into the cost savings over a diesel because I use 6 quarts vs 10 for a diesel. I don't need DEF (another savings). My truck gets 14 MPG unloaded, 9 MPG with my 30ft camper, around 10 pulling my open trailer w/jeep loaded, and 11 pulling my 21 ft boat. I would have loved a DMAX, but I don't regret my decision to get the 6.0 gasser.

    I think you're doing good on mpg. Most diesel trucks are around 12mpg with a load like that. By way of 6.0 comparison, my 2002 2500hd 6.0 and 4L80E with a 12,000 pound fifth wheel behind it gets 8 mpg. It doesn't like the steep hill climbs in Arizona but every where else it makes a good towing engine even with 300,000 miles on it .

    • @garydoebler1263
      @garydoebler1263 Před 4 měsíci

      For a 6.0 LS to pull 14,000, I would do it in stock form. I'm guessing you have 4.10 axle gearing. If so to make that engine pull a heavy load easier, I would recommend upgrading the air intake and exhaust. Change the axle gearing to 4.56 or 4.88 if you run in hilly terrain. You rpm will be higher but a 6.0 can run at 4000rpm all day long for years without issue, as long as it is already in good shape. Wind resistance is a big factor. These things will help it tow better but with ease is a relative term. With a 14K trailer watch that you are not exceeding your payload as that will most likely affect handling and safety. Some people will say a 14K trailer will affect safety. The truck itself can handle it. The 8.1 and the Duramax had higher capacities. Also be mindful of engine and especially transmission cooling.

    • @WalkingDead520
      @WalkingDead520 Před 4 měsíci

      @@garydoebler1263 im not sure how that works, im still learning truck stuff. I heard 4.10 axle ratio is good for towing. I only plan to tow about 4 to 6 times a year and my truck is also my main transportation thats why i didnt get a diesel so i might be good just upgrading the motor to a stage 2 maybe 1. Im gonna have to talk with a specialist about this but im also still confused about how much fifth wheel i can tow. On my tech specs it says max 15,500 but on google it says 12,000.. on my tech specs it also says for a travel trailer the max is 12,000.. any idea?

      You got one of the best years of the 6.0 vortec man. I believe its the 2ng gen chevys from 07 to 2013. They have the best 6.0 engines. Super reliable. Take care of her and she'll last forever. I have a 2004 which is still better than the 3rd and 4th gen chevys.

    Dude you actually forgot to activate the towing / hauling button which actually helps a lot with gas mileage & towing. Lol 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😂

      GM recommends only activating the tow/haul mode if at 70% or more of the towing capacity. That little S10 on a trailer is only about 40% towing capacity.
