I use handheld a lot more now than I used to. When I first started photography I used my tripod all the time for almost every shot mainly because I saw all the pro's doing it on location. I've since learned that I really don't need to rely on it for sharp photos, only those that need a longer shutter speed because of low light or a nice waterfall picture.
With a stabilized lens I found that I can shoot with a lot slower shutter speed than 1/focal length. I can shoot handheld at 400mm with ss 1/50 and get tack sharp photos. I guess it all comes down to how much help you get with stabilization from your lens/camera body, and your own body 🤷♂️
