X-Men: Days of Future Past - What’s the Difference?

  • X-Men: Days of Future past hit theaters last year with the force of a dropping baseball stadium! It had everyone: Magneto! Professor X! And lots and lots of Wolverine! But in the original Marvel Comics story arc, things were a bit different, to say the least! Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
    Comic book movies have gotten so frequent that they’re moving beyond the origin story (usually, anyway, SPIDER-MAN), and tacking the plot lines of actual issues of actual comic books. We’ve got the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming take on Civil War next year. And X-Men: Days of Future Past was very much based on a 2-issue arc in Uncanny X-Men from 1981.
    But, boy oh boy, were there some changes along the way. Thanks to the pre-established timeline in Fox’s X-Men universe, the box office draw of certain actors, and the general hazards of source-to-film adaptation, the Days of Future Past storyline went through a lot of changes from page to screen.
    What did you think? Have you read the Uncanny X-Men Days of Future Past arc? How do you think the movie compared? What’s your favorite X-Men movie? Would you like to have seen Kitty Pryde take a leading role?
    What other works would you like to see us explore on What’s The Difference?

The video explanation of the movie logic that Kitty was not born yet in 1973 while Wolverine was a full-body adult in 1973 fits as well why she would send him back in time.

      Even if Magneto is right, it's his fault that the future is the way we saw in DOFP. If he hadn't antagonized the humans so much or ruined Xavier's peacekeeping goals, then the humans wouldn't have built an army of giant robots programmed to kill all mutants.

    • @doomed2063
      @doomed2063 Před 8 lety +14

      Kitty Pryde learns, in the comics, that time doesn't work the way they thought. The many worlds interpretation ends up being how time works in the Marvel universe and all they did by going back was create a new timeline. So in the comics the DoFP future is just an alternate timeline from the main 616 universe but when the story came out the idea of the main Marvel universe being 616 wasn't established yet and at the time, the DoFp future was the future, not a possible/alternate future.
      Overall, as a comic book fan, it's hard not to love what Fox is doing woth he franchise. Event though its not the faithful adaptation all is nerds would love, it's still been a good interpretation and thats all I want. Go ahead and make changes and reinterpret the source material, just do it well. People only take issue with changing the source material when it ends up sucking. If you do it well, like Marvel has done, fans will accept it.

    Personally, I think it's cool that there are differences in both the comics and the movies, because it creates a wider range of creativity and new exciting plot possibilities. For the movie, though, I think it would've been nice for there to be a few brief moments in the future that have Storm interact with the other characters; then we could either get to know their comic book origins, or we could get some new creative stories about their pasts. Overall, I love both versions of the Days of Future Past storyline.

      Exactly. The Sentinels are actually scary. They set out to make the deadliest robots ever put on film... and they succeeded. And the core story hasn't changed. Someone from the future has to go back in time to stop Mystique from assassinating someone, leading to the destruction of all life on Earth. That's this movie. In the wake of Avatar, having Kitty send Logan back in time to his younger self, to his avatar in the 70s makes total sense. Hell, the animated series didn't even feature Kitty

In the comics, Kelly had nothing to do with the sentinels and that future was just a reaction to the assassination.

    The question why they didn't bring Quicksilver to Paris, was a production problem. In the original script, it was said that Xavier, McCoy and Logan Went for Juggernauts help, so they could free Magneto. When the studio was going to film the scene where they rescue Magneto, Fox told the production team that they wanted Brian Singer to use Quicksilver instead. Why they did this? it was to spit on Marvel Studios saying like, "yeah, you use QS on Age of Ultron, we can use him too! But he will now be part of our universe!" Brian Singer obviusly didn't have any problem with that, so he used QS and made a better character than QS from Age of Ultron. But I Think the reason he wasn't on the rest of the Movie was that he wasn't on the originall script. So that's it!

    Well the actual main reason for sending Wolverine instead of Professor X was because Wolverine was the only one who could actually go back that far because of his healing factor keeping his brain from getting ripped apart unlike Professor X who would've died attempting it. Charles having issues in the past had nothing to do with it since older Charles would've been the one in control of the body instead of damaged younger Charles.

It was originally written as the Juggernaut, but when Marvel announced Quicksilver would be in the Avengers (the characters rights are owned by both companies), Fox changed the scene, so they could get the character onscreen first.
    Also of note - the reason Kitty Pride was given the time travel powers in the film was to nod to the original comic. She only has one power in the comics, but they gave her two for the films. (No explanation about how she has two powers IN the film, but I'm guessing they'd just call it a secondary mutation, kinda like Emma Frost.)

  • @ThaddeusRossJoeySmithereens

    When I read Claremont's and Byrne's run on X-men, I thought to myself ,"This ought to be in the X-men movies." And then The Last Stand's treatment of the Dark Phoenix saga made me lose all hope in that ever properly happening. Then X-men Origins: Wolverine was released, and whatever hope that had remained was completely gone. I thought First Class was mediocre, and that the Wolverine was pointless filler. So naturally when I heard about Days of Future Past, I was angered. The movie was released, and I watched it. Best X-men movie ever.

      3 was better than DoFP. All that depressing shit with Charles pretty much bring a dope fiend, the fact that Jennifer doesn't have a demanding control of the camera's attention like Rebecca does, the story was boring, I mean I'll watch some of it if it's on cable, but I'm changing the channel at the first commercial break.
      X3 had Kelsey Grammer who I've always loved, way better visuals, way more bad ass not just fight scenes but full on battle scenes, shocking Xavier death, a sweet and almost human quote from Erik after Xavier's death, epic climax with another death, X3 was easily better than DoFP.
      Scott dies. Nothing more needs to be said.
      Jean Grey in her underwear. Ok, now nothing more needs to be said.

      2 was probably the best
      DOFP had scenes that no superhero fan wants to see
      seeing Colossus pulled apart, or any of the other deaths is not 'entertainment' for a fan
      it's pretty traumatic;
      grand sacrifices are another category

      I don't know that there'd be anything to contrast, really. Other than the progression of Joker's reemergence (he wakes up near the beginning in the comic but doesn't get released and appear on TV until after the Mutant problem is over, whereas in the movies, he wakes up and says "Batman....darling." when he hears Batman's name on the newscast talking about the Mutants' defeat, or the last line of movie 1) and some minor dialogue changes (most notably the absence of a lot of the inner monologues, which is fine, inner monologues don't work very well in film compare to in comics, and the ideas of them still come across), the movies are basically identical.

I hate that they gave her a new ability without any explanation. why couldn't they have used a different, new, character to send Wolvie back or have Rogue do it by absorbing the power from someone else. I would like to see you compare and contrast the "Days of Future Past" story arc in the X-Men animated series with the movie version. This is where Bishop is sent into the past using a Vortex Manipulator that Forge stole from Torchwood...I mean...invented to send Wolverine back, but Wolverine was scorched down to his skeleton by a fight with the Sentinels, leaving Bishop as the only choice to go on the mission since Forge had to stay in the future to guide him with the computer system.
    That storyline was EXTREMELY interesting as it then creates an ALTERNATE future where Cable then comes into the past to STOP Bishop from changing things, and has to wear a device that keeps him grounded in the original future, because by Bishop changing the future it destroyed Cable's family. Though it was fun to watch Cable still be in the second Deadpool movie.

    And after Apocalypse Fox will probably have to reboot it again or just suck it up and sell it to Marvel where it belongs
