War Rigged: How Mad Max Pulled Off Five Decades of Mayhem
Mad Max is about motion. Specifically, the motion involved when tons of twisted metal barrel down a desert highway in a nitrous-fueled pursuit of total destruction. Big cars. Little cars. Cool cars. Cow cars. Vans. Dune buggies. Motorcycles. Trucks. Trains, planes, and gyrocopters- if there’s an engine in it, director George Miller can and will blow it up in spectacular fashion.
The mastermind behind the madness has been shredding the unroadworthy for nearly 50 years now, honing his craft through each outrageous crash. But how did the chases and action scenes throughout the Mad Max saga evolve along with the technology, budgets, and skills in Miller’s arsenal?
We’ve got a huge haul ahead of us, so buckle up, thunder up and let loose the dogs of war on a journey into the completely insane, extremely dangerous, and utterly real automotive annihilation that defines Mad Max.
This video was written by Charlie Lopresto, edited by Shiraz Dhume and Justin Donaldson.

I saw Mad Max at the drive-in when i was 11 in 1979. The American accent dub was painfully obvious and really distracting. I'd seen plenty of foreign dubbed movies and I didn't understand why, if the lip-sync matched, it was dubbed. It wasn't until I saw Road Warrior at the same drive-in a few years later that I put it together.

Some corrections I'd like to make, Rambo in the novel did not kill any member of the National Guard, and the only non-law enforcement civilians (not counting the hoodlums who mugged him in a flashback) he killed were Orval and two men who were were out to shoot him in the woods. The only person he killed in the town towards the end of the story besides Teasle was a police officer who was blown to bits when he was walking out of the police station that Rambo rigged to explode (it's unclear if anyone else died during Rambo's final act of vandalism). Contrary to popular belief, Rambo in the novel wasn't a mindless psychopath who completely snapped and slaughtered everyone he came across, most of the killings he did were justified, one arguably a notable exception was the killing of Mitch who was already seriously injured by Teasle (who beat him to a pulp, knocked out all his teeth during a tantrum he had over the other cops running away) and struggling to walk when Rambo killed him (though the exact confrontation isn't described beyond Teasle finding Mitch's body with his throat slit, so it's possible that Mitch may have drawn his sidearm at Rambo). IMO, the differences between the two Rambos have been blown a bit out of proportion.

George Miller getting to see his vision and story through from film to film over the decades is surely one of the greatest success stories in moviemaking history. A minimal budget, guerrilla-style B-movie became one of the greatest action series in cinema history, all whilst the original mastermind behind it continued to serve as writer/director.

It's not really a surprise that Fury Road came in second to Pitch Perfect at the box office when you realize the whole Mad Max franchise owes a lot of its aesthetic and sensibilities to heavy metal music and in 2015 the general music listening public had long moved away from rock and metal in favor of highly polished rap and pop. Hence, much of the terrifying grittiness and pointless nihilism as epic and bombastic spectacle was (unfairly) seen as nothing more than weird and off-putting edginess.

41:44 that is one of the most amazing effects in film partly because of what it represents but a body wouldn't act that way if hit by a 200 mph wind. There'd be no skeleton standing holding a fence. The whole thing would get blown backwards and of course skin and muscle is a lot more resilient than you think. A body would move backwards in a kind of glob but the bones would move too. And no one would remain standing while being burned alive. Okay, it's just a fake movie, I know. But those shots of the force look amazing anyway.

4:54 sorry, but one hand stretching while everything else is not changing is not just illogical but downright silly. Plus, the face-stretching part is not convincing upon scrutiny because well, it just looks like latex rubber being stretched instead of a real musculature growing. I think all those edits don't work all that well but you couldn't just really transform with practical effects. 3:28 haha that's a funny shot. David's upper part is his but the chest and abdomen are just fake then the legs are being controlled by someone else under that false floor either via hands/poles or some means. Makes the body look elongated with shorter legs but he can't roll over at that point cuz... there's a huge hole in the floor. 3:37 if he was in THAT much pain, he'd be rolling from side to side and maybe holding his mid-section with his arms and so on. But he can't cuz he's literally not there. His chest ends and dips under the floor and boy, if they had just made ANOTHER transformation outfit for that one angle at 3:37 where it's all David, then he could have rolled left and right with his legs rolling also and it would have been a bit more convincing than him just literally PINNED to the floor watching. oh well.. just my thoughts which no one cares about.

Solo is 10 years before A New Hope. It's not a great movie but there's plenty of time for Han to become more jaded. Perticular with how hopeless the fight against The Empire is over that period. Rebels, Jedi: Survivor, Andor and even Rogue One to a point show how futile the Rebellions efforts are before the battles of Scarif and Yavin. I also disagree with the point about the Obi-Wan series. Leia's message doesn't mean that Obi-Wan hasn't interacted with her father since the Clone Wars. The series also contextualises her reaction to Luke mentioning Ben Kenobi during her rescue. Nothing in the movie before that point suggests she new him under that name, quite the opposite. This whole review comes across as a little circlejerky.
