  • Over the last year I took photos and video of my Dutch Barge. Now I’ve decided to document the restoration of De Vrouwe Linda my sailing Dutch Barge. In this episode we take a walk around the boat and look at the interior, over three seasons, looking at what’s changed. It’s a full tour of the outside and the inside of the boat.

    after allready seen 6 previous parts , ihave to say that i loved the vids you made. I am from Holland and being a skipper onb these sailing barges a very long time and gwrew up as a son of inland barge dutch skipper many things you showded are veryfamiliuar to me like the oplaces you been trough , very nice done . My cousing used to have an inland barge and was sold to ireland , where it was refitted as a dredging barge , the vesel called now Norman and was build at the Boot shipyard in 1928 as one of the first engine driven barges. These barges klooks beautifull in shape too , my uncle have it lenghtened with12 meter and is now 42 meters equiped with a 365 Caterpilar engine , the wheelhouse renewed very ugly the rest is origional .
    You obviously knows a lot regarding engines .I am looking forward for the next couple of episodes
    Thanks for that

      Wow! You have a great personal history there! 42 meters is huge!
      I don’t know everything about engines. I would love to rebuild an engine. That would be fun.

    You Sir, are a man of steel! I mean lifting that flooring to reveal what's underneath. I know you had to do it, but I doubt if I could have. Everything below the waterline, inside the boat and out, would scare me ridgid. I'm quite mechanically able, 'cos my Dad taught me when I was young. And having owned, maintained and repaired my many vintage and classic cars over the years - well - I know which holes you have to pour the money into. Even now, my Morris Minor's parts below floor level scare me to death. I have to let someone else check these bits out these days - scares me what I might see. (and probably wouldn't be able to straighten up again anyway!) Beautiful boat Canice and I still love the beard! Teresa

      @canicebannon  Před 3 lety

      So was I, there was loads of water that had come in down the mast over four years, but the steel was well greased and it held for the most part. My parents had a Morris Minor which was handed down from my Grandmother and the registration plate was ‘RIP 123’ sadly the car got scraped before I was old enough to know the value of it!
      There are many skin fittings that are below the waterline that all have to be welded up eventually. Enjoy the Beard, while it lasts!!!

    There is no hat in this vid. So the hat was there to throw me off ! Thats ok. The boat looks great in the pics with the sails up, it looks like theres a lot of work to do, but its a beautiful boat, its great you decided to have a mast, love the old bits like the winch. Nice character of the boat. Thanks for the amusing vids.

    What a beautiful boat, full of character and you are one lucky man. I suspect you are now avidly doing the euro millions lottery in order to maintain her 😂😂 Really looking forward to future videos now that you can travel without quarantine (hint hint)😁. I suppose you are going to make a confessional box out of the reclaimed church wood🤣. Good luck for the future and good health to enjoy

      Well! The bill for a new mast and new counterweight, €9000 approx. Thankfully, I was saving hard and the money is ring fenced to pay for this. Covid has put a dent in my earning potential so I’ve had to rethink my strategy. Hence I decided to get the boat back to the UK sooner than originally planned. Your confessional observation is quite insightful as the interior will be taking on a more ecclesiastical feel as I’ve been invited to purchase a pew from a central London Church.... This must remain a secret for now...shh. There will be creative ideas and solutions to overcome the absence of lottery winnings. I can’t wait to post videos of De Vrouwe Linda and wont be long now....

      I love Cruising the Cut. I’ll be looking into heating solutions for next winter. Pretty confident I won’t have the funds in the short term..... You wouldn’t be the first to take a narrowboat across the Channel...

    Hi Canice, I'm considering buying a Dutch barge but a few narrow boaters have told me that they are too big for canals. I was wondering whether they are worth it for the space they give. Your input would be appreciated. Love your videos by the way.

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 3 lety

      Hi Paul.
      That’s a strange thing to say. Too big for what? If the boat you buy fits into a lock then it fits just fine. There are plenty of British wide beam boats on the canal that manage just fine.
      Also, Dutch barges come in all sizes. They don’t have to be monsters.
      Thanks for watching!
      Ask me any questions you like.
      Be aware of air draught so you can fit under bridges. And also be aware you now have to pay VAT on the boat if you buy it outside of the uk. (Br***t)

    Well, I guess with the lockdown you had some time to mull over your plans. Think of it as protection against doing something in the first blush of enthusiasm that you'd regret when living with it.

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 3 lety

      Hahaha! That’s what I keep saying when asked, how much work have I got done!?! I’ve had so many changes of mind that I’m getting to be a firm believer in taking my time. For example I wasn’t initially going to get the mast replaced and then I realised if I didn’t get it done in the Netherlands, then when was I going to do it. Covid and the accompanying reduction in finances have caused me to think hard about my choices. I’m enjoying the process of being extra creative!

      @@canicebannon All I can do is amateur design on my computer, but I've also found the most challenging design problems spark genuinely new thinking and the most satisfying creative experiences. Linda is a wonderful boat. Seeing how you cared for her bilges makes me think she's in the best hands possible. Don't worry if you can't afford to give her a glamorous makeover now. Keep doing those vital "first step" structural things that prepare her for comfortable and safe living later on. You have plenty of time to make her pretty, although I must say, she strikes me as a sensible-shoes sort of girl.
