I'll try my best to break it down for y'all...
This is in no way shape or form a total or complete analysis of the game series. This is a sample, at best, of it all! Play it for yourself (If you're sadistic enough, try Lunatic first time round!) and get some experience under your belt!
There WILL be future videos on this channel that will be going deeper into the gameplay and lore of the Touhou Project, and will contain more information than this catch-all video! But for now, enjoy!

Fanbase towards Touhou makes look like is something better than just a bullethell game.
It certainly does, that's more than half the reason I like the series so much. :)
A lot of the "story lines" in Touhou are purposely vague, with the story being exclusively told through the places your travel through and the small amount of dialogue your character has with each boss.
The music and visual design attract people to the game, and the wondrous world it is set in along with the vague story that leaves much to the imagination makes the series a lot more interesting than you would normally think. The interest to know more with the openness of the story lines leaves tons of room for people to make their own interpretations on things... hence all of the content made by fans (including several fan sponsored short anime series).
This breeds the kind of community that can last a long time since it isn't fueled entirely by the content that the creator puts out (which is limited by the creator), but by the content that the fans make in speculation to how certain things could be in the Touhou universe.
Well, at least that is my interpretation of how it is. Most people who become fans of Touhou don't stop being fans of it. Many other games will have bursts of hype around the release of the game which dies down, but Touhou stays steady with its community.
It is. It's a wonderful franchise that mixes the excitement of battle with the charm of folklore and the beauty of nature.

I have listened to quite a lot of touhou music and I can agree with you.
Other than black MIDIs that will destroy your ears and children songs(ISOYS or something like that with tons of bunnies for some reason) there is quite a lot of relaxing songs(Xe - Flandre's Xmas night is my favourite) and fast and awesome power metal songs that you can have 5+ eargasms per listening of a song(Demetori - View of the river Styx, Demetori - Love-colored master spark, Dragonforce - Trough fire and flames, and so on).
I've never played any touhou games, but I have played some fan-made flash games(Bullet Heaven is the best). Too bad most of the music is quite shitty.

I've done the math, and, not counting those irrelevant background decorations called people featured in the books, there are 133 Touhou characters. (including 14.5 and 15)

What's nice about this serie is that you can be a fan of the whole pack, or just the soundtracks, characters, gameplays separatly, or at a different level. You don't need to play the games to really appreciate the work of the author.

To be quite honest, I _wouldn't_ necessarily say that Touhou isn't anime. At least not at this point when fanmade Touhou anime has actually been made... If I were to categorize Touhou at this point in time, I'd say it's a "creative phenomenon originating as a shoot 'em up series of games"... Because, honestly, you can approach Touhou from any creative angle you'd like, as long as you give ZUN the credit he's due as the original creator, you can paint fanart, remix music, write fanfiction stories, draw fanmade comics and/or manga, produce entire anime episodes, make fangames... ANYTHING. And you can even sell your fan produced stuff, too. To say at this point that Touhou is only shmup games would be vastly understating how amazingly creative people have been with the series and how amazingly encouraging ZUN is in regards to people using his characters and world for themselves.
If I were to say what has made Touhou such an immensly popular series, I'd say "it's flawed"... ZUN is a poor artist himself (there's absolutely nothing wrong with the design of his characters, it's just that he cannot do them justice) but he has a completely non-ironic "let's see you do better" approach to it. If you think you can draw his characters better than him, then he basically encourages you to get creative and actually do so. The characters themselves have personalities that, while implicitly deep and varied enough to be interesting, also have something "uncertain" about them that anyone can start reading into and elaborating upon. The stories are also similarily understated (typically an incident occurs, the playable characters set out to fix it, they meet a few new faces that they kick in the teeth on, the incident is resolved and everyone has tea and sake at the shrine) and leave you with an itching "Then what?" kinda feeling that it often refuses to elaborate upon, encouraging you to fantasize your own continuations. The music, from back when it was all MIDI util now that it's synthesized, is great but also has room for improvement; it's very remix friendly and lacks lyrics, yet, at the same time, almost all scores basically underline _where_ and _how_ you're supposed to sing. And tying it all together is the fact that ZUN gives us far more question marks than he gives us exclamation marks. "Why does a hypercompetent maid serve a petulant and immature vampire and why does she refuse the vampire's offer to give her eternal life?" ZUN won't tell so we have to come up with theories and stories and song lyrics set to the characters' leidmotifs all on our own explaining our interpretations of the characters and their reasons... ive been looking for some bullet hell games recently, been thinking about touhou, but i was just wondering about how "anime-y" the games are, like the artstyle and music and whatnot. i really dont like anime (honest opinion plz no h8) but i can tolerate anime-y games to a certain degree (got no problems with ikaruga, and even if i did i'd be stupid to pass on such a good game.)

You then start getting into abilities such as "Nukes", "Controlling fate", the ability to effortlessly crush anything with a simple squeeze of the hand, the creation of "gaps" which can even affect concepts...
Once you get to the high tiers you can't even say who's stronger than who, it's pretty much just a matter of who hits first.

The very thing that brought me over to Touhou was the music. Not the games, not the fanservice, the freaking music. Video game music doesn't get any awesomer than Touhou music. The music is like the only reason I am a Touhou fan. I don't play any of the official games, although I do have one Touhou fan made danmaku shooter on my tablet, but that's it for playing the games, and I'm not a part of the fandom or the fanservice or any of that crap. I just come for the music, and I'll have you know, I have over 100 Touhou instrumentals on my tablet, both original songs and remixes.

So ZUN really just made a mistake on putting pentagrams. Sorry for people who got easily offended by the amount of pentagrams.
(Although there is Rumia, and the vampire sisters. They DO NOT use Black or Blood magic.)
+Felix Rondero Pentagrams were for a purpose, they symbolize magic, and Gensokyo is a magical place, so ZUN used them. Add in magician characters like Byakuren, Marisa, Patchouli, Alice, Mai, and Yuki, and it's pretty obvious it was intended.

Loved the video. But just 2 things you were wrong about:
1. In EoSD, you couldn't see the hitbox. Maybe with a fanmade patch. But PCB was the first Touhou game to show hitboxes.
2. Extra stages can ONLY be unlocked from easy difficulty in PCB (Touhou 7) and IN (Touhou 8). Every other Touhou game requires you to beat normal difficulty before playing the extra stage with that character/type.
I see. I must have accidentally skimmed over those bits when finalizing the video. I believe in the video at 3:30 I meant to type AFTER the EoSD onwards, in any case thanks for clearing that up!
Illogical Pine You're welcome! After ZUN made Touhou EoSD, he wanted the game to be easier, so in PCB, he made the extra stage easier and made the Phantasm stage the real extra stage. He also gave a barrier in the game. In Touhou IN, he made it even easier with Spell Practice and more lives in the option menu. After Touhou 9, ZUN waited a year for the fanbase to cool down...which it didn't. It just got bigger. So when he made Touhou MoF, he set everything back to it's roots and made Touhou hard again. *cough*Probably hoping to lessen the range of people beating the games.*cough*
(And the reason why all the songs have screeching trumpets, is because that's ZUN instrument he used since a child I think. I respect that.)
Point 2 is partially wrong, you can unlock extra stages in GFW and DDC by doing easy too. For GFW you'd have to 1cc every route in easy (any difficulty is allowed for that matter.) And DDC is actually allowing you to get the EX once you 1cc easy.

You forgot a vital part, the game has to be played on 60 FPS max and no continues along with Normal difficulty or higher (EOSD TH6) as an example to unlock the extra stage.

ZUN has actually improved art a little recently, certainly with leg drawing... Hands (as seen on Reimu's Legacy picture) still need some work though. And, I prefer his old shading style.

One of the things I like about this series in particular is that ZUN is so chilled with the copyright stuff, and doesn't care if people make fanwork. In fact I remeber that his policy on fanwork was literally: Give proper credits where due, obviously, and don't spoil the game endings for others.
