  • I'm back! This is the first episode in a new series called "Why I Like." I'll grab a game from my collection and talk about why I like it. We travel back in time for this one to take a look at Talisman 2nd Edition from Games Workshop. It's not a full review or a tutorial, just something I can manage to produce while taking care of a toddler! I think this first one is longer than the other ones will be. Thanks for visiting The Dragon Table!

This version has the best artwork. I really love that 80s style.

Thank you for this video. :). Talisman was my first real fantasy table top game. Played it as a 9 year old in 1986 when I visited my relatives in Santa Rosa CA. I loved playing the Troll and the Ghoul. The idea that I could play an evil character vs being the hero was a strange quirk my little imagination kept returning to. The artwork on the cover and on the character cards, board, adventure cards pushed me to learn to draw. What a great little gateway into the world of imagination and creativity for a 9 year old kid.

Same, I played this as a 9-year-old in '86 but in the UK. Have introduced it to my kids and they love it too. Hands down the best board game! The artwork is inspirational and has definitely influenced me as a designer. I believe everyone should have a little bit of 'Talisman' in their lives!

I love this edition. The artwork by Gary Chalk is very idiomatic of early 80s Games Workshop before they forsook all their fun stand alone games to focus on their Warhammer line in the early 90s.

Exactly. Chalk's art has CHARM, a feature missing from most later editions.

Agreed about the awesomeness of the second edition. Very nice video, thanks!

I've played this game from the 90's and so on, my father got it in the 80s and we still play it to this day. Hands down best board game I've played.

Thank you for this video :-) I am considering to get into the game, it was helpful to see it all so clearly :)

The Prophetess was my favorite. I like her card drawing power. We played with all the expansion but never had Timescape. Those "all weekend" Talisman marathons were so much fun! It is great to see all the stuff out on your table. It looks so inviting! I laughed at "Events that nom your face". Ha!

We usually outlawed the Prophetess as a house rule because her ability was so overpowered.

Just looked up your BGG profile to see games you own. How often to you update the rating you give a game and what is your 1-10 scale translate into? I ask because it lists this as a 6 on April 2013, and for me a 6 means a slightly above average and thus good game but to a lot of BGGers a good game is only 8-10.
As to the game itself, I remember when I went to a game group that my local university students formed and playing an epic game of Talisman 2E - all the expansions, all the modules, probably 12-20 players... it was an all evening affair (4pm-2am) where people would go get food after their turn (mid-game) or play other games... but most of the time you sat around just chatting in a true "beer and pretzels" style of game play.
Now I don't enjoy Talisman as much. I am not very lucky. However, I do have a favorite house rule: XP. Each time you have an encounter you fail, you earn 1XP in the stat. Monster stat values are XP when turned in. You can spend XP to increase a stat by 1 by paying the cost of the new stat (2->3 cost 3, 3->4 cost 4, 9->10 cost 10, etc), and you can do multiple improvements each turn (so 2->4 is 2->3->4 or 3+4=7 XP cost). This accelerates the early game play and then stalls/makes late game play more risky (do you play it safe and take a long time building up power to get the Crown _or_ do you rush and hope the dice favor you in your challenges). It isn't a house rule for everyone, but it matches my play style better.

dillenbeck53531 I haven’t updated my BGG game list in quite a while. I remember going back and forth on my Talisman rating quite a few times. I recognize that it is not a “good game,” so I think my official rating reflects that. But it doesn’t change how I feel emotionally about it, some of which is certainly colored by my past experiences with it and who I was playing it with - viewing it as an experience, not just a game. This video isn’t a straight objective review of good game vs. bad game, just what *I* like about this one.

2nd edition is best edition of Talisman, the 4th edition has this really bland modern fantasy art style

Exactly. Charm and atmosphere abound in Chalk's 2nd edition artwork!
