  • This was a very serious safety concern we are correcting. Rv’s are exempt for annual safety inspections. But i can almost assure you that this bus had these previous shoddy repairs done while it was in revenue service hauling passengers.
    Money, time, and knowledge is all it takes to make these brakes safe and operational again.

    I always hate when mechanics say "We just put pads on it, the new pads will clean up the rotor." No, this is basically never the case. Just replace the rotor.

      It never is, the pad wears faster on the corroded areas of the disc and then you'll be stuck with the exact same problem

    Special tools: When I was a child (and this is the vehicle I learned to drive on) we had a 1976 For E-250 van. It had a three on the tree. Somehow, at exactly the correct time, while dad was pulling into the driveway at home, the transmission went into both reverse and second. We had a stuck truck. Dad and I (I was about 10 at the time) yanked that transmission, and since we did all of our own car work--I mean everything!, we tore down the transmission. When mom and dad bought the van, they also purchased the service manuals from Ford. Tearing into this transmission, at one point it called for Ford tool number 247-txb1320-A (made up, of course). There was no way dad was going to buy one of those, so...remember the movie, "A Christmas Story?" Ralphie learned how to swear from his father, and over the next two days, so did I. We finally got that taken apart sans tool, got the new gears, and rebuilt that transmission. Sadly, by the time it was time for me to learn how to drive (at age 14 (It was Idaho)), the transmission would slip out of second gear if you weren't careful (remember, 3 on the tree).

      Those old Ford 3 speed on the tree. Always having issues with the linkages and bushings which would cause most of the shifting issues (and shifting into multiple gears). My friend and his father had a 64 Falcon, a first gen Ford Econoline truck, and another Ford. All of the three speed on the tree, all of them with shifting issues.

    I have worked on jet fighters and large transport aircraft as well as huge mine equipment. I enjoy watching you and your son do a job the way it is supposed to be done. There is a big difference between someone who SAYS they know what they are doing (some of the shops that worked on some of your customers) and you who KNOWS what you are doing. After my first and last bus experience I probably will never get another bus but if I did would first insist in taking it to you for an inspection!

    Putting brake pads in round the right way is so important. Some time ago I had a car serviced by a main dealer, I drove it out of the workshop, round the corner and straight back again - the service manager couldn't make his mind up if fainting or puking was best his reaction - both sets of front disk pads had been put in round the wrong way; result :- mechanic sacked and a complete new set of pads, disks and calipers, plus two more free services.

    • @scrumpydrinker
      @scrumpydrinker Před měsícem +1

      @@holdenbrougham1056 two points,
      1, commercial disc brakes are excellent brakes and will easily stand up to intensive operations and are widely used.
      2, all brake systems have to be checked regularly and it is obvious that in this case that hasn’t happened. In revenue service these systems are given a thorough test on a roller brake tester every 28 days, more often on a high mileage duty, think Greyhound operations. With air or air / hydraulic operation there is no physical connection between the brake pedal and brake pads / shoes so you cannot gauge the amount of clearance between the pads and disc just by pedal feel. With manual adjustment this should be checked weekly at maximum, preferably more often. With automatic adjusters it is equally necessary as they can go out of adjustment without any warning until you get horrible brake imbalance, by then it is an accident waiting to happen.

    So I would imagine that bus has to get a state inspection every year, wouldn’t that one brake rotor and pads fail state because the pads are not contacting the rotor at 100%?

    • @chris6200
      @chris6200 Před měsícem +1

      It depends upon the state. Some have inspections for all vehicles, some are only commercial. Many states have no inspections required for any privately owned vehicle regardless of size.

      @@chris6200 wow thats scary the governor of Virginia where I live thought of doing away with the state inspection a few years ago and the State police and other people said "Um you probably dont want to do that" knowing that there would be a lot of death traps driving down the road.

  • @fw1421

    This bus had to have spent most of its life in the NorthEast. So much rust had to come from heavily salted roads. Painful expense.

    How is it that I've been pulled by DOT twice. 1st time I was 5 PSI low in 1 tire, 2nd time my marker strip was out. All the while there's busses like this one on the road.

  • @SI-lg2vp
    @SI-lg2vp Před měsícem

    Most RV buses are poorly maintained because the owners have no idea what needs attention mechanically. They just put fuel, oil, and water on and drive away. If you never owned a bus before you have no clue, and most likely present a danger on the road to others. If you thought a bus is affordable, its not. Drive with lots of caution around busses that are not owned and operated by a commercial operator.

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  Před měsícem +4

      That bad previous brake job was almost certainly done when it was in revenue service. So much for you thinking commercial operators do things better

      We’ve got literally thousands of buses here in the northern NJ area, MTA, NJ Transit, long haulers like Peter Pan or Greyhound, Monsey Trails, and so on. Having watched your channel for a couple years now, I have to wonder how many of those buses are rolling death traps like this one. It’s scary.

    Worst? You ain't never worked on transit bus brakes. Pure cinders & a 200+ pound drum to wrestle off/on.
    That thing did a lot of sitting & then had some bonehead driving it like a Camry. I use the HF Herc exclusively for everything, unbeatable for the price.
