Up close with British Army Challenger 3's new periscope

- The new Challenger 3 will be kitted out with an embedded image periscope, a cutting-edge combination of a classic glass periscope and a digital display electronic periscope.
The electronic periscope is connected to a camera system called Spectre which consists of a thermal imaging camera, a day camera, and an overlay of the two.
The new periscope will also have a 'reversionary mode' - in the event that the main battle tank loses power and the situational awareness cameras stop working, the driver will be able to flip a switch to look out of the non-electronic glass periscope.

Beats the pants off what Chieftain drivers used to have with windscreen wipers that were more akin to a sloth with mobility issues, night sight was just a haze of green trying to follow the convoy light of the vehicle in front and the crick in your neck was a nightmare. Thank goodness for innovations progress eh.
But…. At least they had ammo lol
@@TheLastCrumb. and a lot more wagons to play with 🤔
@@stuc734 at least we’ll have some driving about delivering tea, the most well protected kettle in history!
@@TheLastCrumb. aaah the BV eh and Wolfgang on Soltau those were the days A Sqn 4rtr 1984 to 1991 Fear Naught
Yes, at least we had an Army. Now we have a force of kids with teenage NCOs and Officers with little to no combat experience. Slava Ukrani!!!
Very good to have a manual backup override designed into the sighting systems for CHR 3, as becoming digitally and electronically blinded in the ferocity on an engagement, can be Fatal.
Challenger 3 will be fantastic !!!
... however ...
not just a tiny bit " TOO FEW " !!!
Looks great. Well done!
That is totally cool!
Nice innovation tbh 😸
looking forward to seeing the new challenger in use. British army is getting some good equipment. Would like to see one on show so people can look around one when they are in use.
yeah but they are not getting enough of them. They waffle on about force multipliers and claim one tank is worth 4 or 5, but the reverse of that is you lose one tank and you are losing 4 or 5. I guarantee that 1 vs 5 the UK loses every time against reasonably modern tanks.
Looks good 👍
Be careful of Treasonous Steve Insidious and Traitor English Veteran
Reminds me of the different visual modes that the predators have in the films. Want some candy?
Augmented reality I would hope.
‘Up periscope!’ Challenger III looks to have a hint of Leclerc about it
If you are fighting an opponent and your tank looses all types of power, I guess you have bigger problems. But less exposed infared camera could be a plus/easier to repair for bullet/shrapnel damage.
We need more than 148 MBTs given the state of play at the moment
Well this will be really good with the vid though there was a mistake. They need to put the model of the Challenger 3 in not the current in service Challenger 2.
There's more inaccuracies than that. (a) it's not the actual EIP going on the vehicle and (b) the camera isn't part of the package, it's being paired with a unit from Rheinmetall.
If they routinely use the colour regular camera image overlaid with thermals, adversaries might start painting luminous green and red decoy objects.
you guys really need to update that CGI, you keep showing the Challenger 2 when you mean Challenger 3.
Why is the daytime sensor so low quality - the periscope view looks far superior for use in daytime jsut due to image fidelity/quality?😅
Agreed, looks like VHS quality!
I doubt that they are going to show the full capabilities in public
Cheap parts is what they go for. Export will have 4k for sure.
Maybe your phones cam is better in bright light but these must perform in low light at moving. Try your phone cam before night when your eyes can see OK. Your phone is blind. I see more issue with depth perception. On small distances need depth and large view angle. I think larger curved screen with multiple cams would be option. Multiple cams at least
I suspect the public are probable given a somewhat diluted or even manipulated view of the visuals of these sighting systems sensors etc, as the true fidelity of these new systems is bound to be classified.
I'm sure those 10 tanks will make all the difference
What's the liklihood of losing electrical power but still having engine power?
Depends where it gets hit and what gets broken
Challenger 1 drivers night vision was garbage like staring at a broken black and green tv
Can of spray paint
SLAVA UKRAINI🎺💛💙🔰🔱💪👍🥾💤👀= FREEDOM
Taken out by a cheap chinese made drone...
Yaaaay let's show the world what equipment we use and how to use it........ You might as well just invite the enemy in to join! People in charge of the armed forces really are stupid and nieve these days, not to mention clueless! Not to mention top heavy!
One grain of sand and it’s out of action.
Blimey…what’s a woman know?
More than you I'd warrant.
Considering that she works for the company that makes the kit, probably more than you’ll ever know.
She knows the word erm, and uses it a lot.
@@paulhellawell5920 my very point. Completely inarticulate.
Imagine being so insecure that it triggers you when a woman talks about the production of imaging sensors in a tanks periscope for the compnay that employs her to do just that.
Does it also trigger you when Gordon Ramsey talks about cooking? What can a man know about that right?
