On September 21, 1998, Griffith-Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38. Her death was investigated by the sheriff-coroner's office. The cause of death was suffocation during a severe epileptic seizure. The Orange County coroner's office noted that the autopsy records showed that she did not die from drugs or banned substances and that tissue and organ tests revealed none of the changes associated with recent steroid use. We love you Flo Jo, R.I.P.
+1greenMitsi I know that all I'm saying is that when random testing came in. I.E they could come round your house and test you she retired. she could have made a ton of money and no one has ever got near her world records. just don't sit right
The sheriff-coroner's office announced Florence had suffered an epileptic seizure brought on by a congenital abnormality in her brain. Her body had locked up while she was sleeping facedown, and she had suffocated in her pillow.
I despise stupid people: "After her death in 1998, Prince Alexandre de Merode, the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission, claimed that Joyner was singled out for extra, rigorous drug testing during the 1988 Olympic Games because of rumors of steroid use. De Merode told The New York Times that Manfred Donike, who was at that time considered to be the foremost expert on drugs and sports, failed to discover any banned substances during that testing."
@YaBoiBalla1 Before the 1988 season, Griffith Joyner's best 100 meter time was 10.96 seconds. In 1988 she improved that by 0.47 seconds... There is nothing left to be said.
This is a fascinating interview. Her targeting the World Record in the 400m may have contributed to the other 400m competitors having such fantastic 400m races at Atlanta. 96 was such a high quality field.
The record should not have stood as stated by IAAF "All scientific studies commissioned by the IAAF and independent organisations have since confirmed there was an illegal tailwind of between 5 m/s - 7 m/s at the time. This should have annulled the legality of this result, although the IAAF has chosen not to take this course of action"
But are you telling me there hasn't been loads of juiced female sprinters running against those times before, during and since she ran? Of course there has - take Marion Jones as an example - yet none of them have yet to come close to those mind blowing times, and that still says a lot.
