  • Her uniquely beautiful voice won the hearts of millions. As part of the Carpenters along with brother Richard, Karen Carpenter seemed to have it all, success, fame, adulation and an inspirational talent.
But her dream life was to end in tragedy.
This powerful and moving Emmy Award nominated film tells the inside story of the Carpenters, the group that sold over 100 million albums and singles and enjoyed a record fifteen U.S. Number One hit songs.
Starring Cynthia Gibb as Karen Carpenter and Mitchell Anderson as Richard, it reveals how a shy, weight conscious Karen was forced out from behind the security of her drum kit and into the spotlight. As fame and pressure increased, her reaction was anorexia.
Karen Carpenter's story is revealed featuring an unrivalled film soundtrack that includes original Carpenters recordings of their finest songs, including Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, We’ve Only Just Begun, Top of the World, This Masquerade, Superstar, For All We Know and many more.

I was a hippie in those days and we thought the Carpenters were 'square.' The lifestyle I followed led to drug addiction and alcoholism and a lost life's opportunities. Now 43 years clean and sober, I own my abject shame for my opinion of the Carpenters. Gosh, they were soooo damn good and Karen had the best female voice in her class. Watching this movie just breaks my heart for all she had to endure. If you're listening, Karen. Thank you so much. We love and we miss you.

Yet you're alive and Karen is dead. It's not about being a hippie or doing drugs so much as it is about insecurities and mental illness and needing to self medicate. Richard was addicted to quaaludes.

I'm a neo hippie (millennial one) and thought of the same until I saw Karen's drumming videos on CZcams. And from then on, I got into the Carpenters and wow! Timeless music with a beautiful angelic voice by Karen along with being a highly underrated drummer. Such a drag she died too young! RIP Karen Carpenter. :(

I was a hippie too and The Carpenters got on my nerves back then. Our Senior Class of '71 song was We've Only Just Begun but I voted for We're Not Gonna Take It by The Who 😁 It's so ironic that the Carpenters were fueled by drugs behind the scenes 😬 Anyway, now that I'm an old lady, I really appreciate their musicality and I'm genuinely sorrowful over Karen's sad fate 😢

Life Life. I want to ask an old person about the quality of their life lived and current life and how they feel- now that I am old enough. (As a younger person, I didn’t think of asking older people in my family and they are gone now.) I just want to know cause sometimes I think an impactful life is more important than (just) a long life with nothing but maybe some kids to show for it even though God Said be fruitful and multiply.
It seems Karen Carpenter did not have many happy days though she made a lot of people feel good with her voice.

I ended up having an eating disorder myself when I was 19. As I got a little older, I always told her that I loved her and she would say I know but a child needs to hear that. Two days before she passed which has now been 18 years she said that she loved me. It was nice to hear but inside I still felt sad, because I didn't hear it growing up. I recently saw a documentary called Starving for perfection my friend Randy Schmidt produced it and chatted with people that knew her and it was awesome. I agree Agnes was a dragon lady

I think you mean 53 years back in time. They weren't properly famous until about 1971 I would say even though they were doing good the year before (1970). They were a great duo but nothing fantastic at first with their slow and depressing songs like 'all of my life' and 'close to you', 'we've only just begun'. Karen had a very smooth silky voice, which was also hauntingly beautiful to listen to. While Richards piano complimented her vocals. I liked their more upbeat tunes like 'Postman', 'Top Of The World', 'On the Bayou' and 'Sing', 'Kind of Hush'.

My Gran died 1995 and Grandpa died in 2000, my mom died shortly after in the new year of 2002...then years after...2019 her sister (my aunt) who was a great person with a good heart, died of breast cancer 4 years ago in july. Having discovered the carpenters in the early 90s...... There is something hauntingly sad about Karen's voice that makes you want to reach out and offer a genuine hug to what I now believe was a reluctant star. Finding out about the behind the scenes battles truly lifted the lid on the fact that both Richard and Karen gave perhaps too much of themselves to a public which simply enjoyed their music. Often we believe we know these artists and what they are going through based on the publicity mega machine that drip feed such fans. The lesson most easily learned from Karens story is to try to be kind to everyone as we often never know personal demons others are facing until it's tragically and sadly too late. Rip Karen and thank you for the music 🙏💙

According to the book, when it came time to make this movie, the original director wanted to show the TRUE story about this family. They wanted to include just how badly the mother treated Karen and it was Richard she wanted to see succeed. Of course, Karen's mom and Richard both objected. So the director dropped out and the network brought in another director that would follow the narrative the family wanted to portray. But, the new director that they hired also found out the way the family treated Karen and they didn't like it. Since the family wanted the candy coated version and the director didn't want to lose the job, they hired the woman who played Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) to play the mother as a sly dig to just how evil she was to Karen without actually coming out and saying it.

Her voice had a haunting sound to it. It was also so beautiful as well. It's such a shame her family would never ever change.Karen was stuck at an age she was when they first started out doing their music-13 years old. She never could grow up. And unforunately, she never got better because her family never changed their ways either. No matter how much the fans told her they loved her and bought her music, it wasn't enough for Karen. It's very sad and she is well missed today. But also back then, eating disorders weren't talked about much. No one really lnew much about them until the death of Karen.

I was in the fourth grade when Karen Carpenter passed away at the age of 32. At that time, I didn't know anything about the incredible songs recorded by The Carpenters. But, I eventually discovered their music. "Rainy Days & Mondays" is my favorite song by The Carpenters, and I was in the tenth grade when CBS aired "The Karen Carpenter Story." It was a very touching movie, and she was very beautiful & very talented. Keep resting in peace, Miss Karen Carpenter.

Karen had a life marked by the ignorance of her parents, the lack of love, understanding, criticism from her family, from the press, having to please others and not having a happy life because her family preferred Richard. A
life of stereotypes that led to her death. A beautiful voice almost perfect to please her parents and her brother, that if it weren't for her, they wouldn't be where they are... peace to her soul... The best voice of all time.

@@maryboone903 Mary... as someone that battled both anorexia and bulimia (the only difference I am male) I can tell you that its not about being teased (it doesn't help) it takes MUCH more then that to end up in the grips of an eating disorder. It's about control or the lack thereof in one's life. Karen had no control over her professional or personal life. So she controlled the one thing that no one could take from her. Every morsel of food that crossed her lips... Anorexia once it gets you... It's damn near impossible to get out from the hole. The voice in ones mind constantly telling you.. "You don't deserve to eat. You don't deserve the pleasure food can give..." The weight starts to fall off and you get compliments at first but then as it continues... Those around you start to realize there is something seriously wrong... From that point its a battle... Your anorexic voice telling you not to eat.. and your family and friends trying anything... Cajoling, heart to heart chats, screaming & yelling, silent treatment and begging to get you to eat... and even if you do eat, you immediately get rid of the food by purging or fasting.
It's not without a lot of hard work and intensive therapy that one can overcome and recover from an eating disorder. It took a mild cardiac arrest, 8 days in the hospital, and two years of outpatient counseling to recover.. I will never be completely cured... But I have learned how to cope with and live with my eating disorder...
