It is so easy to bad mouth the old master. At 86 give me a break. The body does break down and the mind is not as quick. If it were not for him we would not be hearing classical guitar in the concert halls. His contribution to the guitar is enormous. Segovia had to fight for the guitar against many detractors who wanted to deny the guitar as a serious concert instrument. From the bar room to the concert stage is quite an accomplishment. In his prime he was awesome.
Segovia did a world tour at the age of 92. How many people even live that long! Much less have the health to travel the world not even considering playing all this music from memory. Anyone who doesn't know his life story should read up about it. He single handedly turned a folk instrument into a concert instrument. He paved the way for every classical guitarist since.
@@ruthcooper1709 He was a pompous, arrogant, imperialist, snob. He bad mouthed the great Latin American guitarists like Barrios and Lauro. He even forbade his pupils from studying and performing their works. As for him “single handedly…..” there were plenty of guitarists before, during, and after his lifetime that were more talented and just as instrumental in elevating the guitar to the classical stage. To see a legend sit in front of you playing flawlessly (maybe the occasional string buzz) was an experience that I have never forgotten. It's disappointing to see all the negative comments - it seems like everyone's an expert these days.

It's important to stand out that Maestro Segovia was also an excellent teacher. Between his most outstanding disciples are Maestro Alirio Díaz, from Carora, Venezuela, and Maestro John William from Australia.
B.S. Before him there was Emilio Pujol, Miguel Llobet, Julian Arcas, and Tarrega. Then came Barrios, Lauro, and Celedonio Romero. All of them were far superior to Segovia as guitarists. Segovia got all the credit ONLY because he was the first to be televised to an American audience.
@Dreamupondream Yes he did. he's also noted as a great guitarist because he brought the instrument into the classical realm and revolutionised how people saw the instrument. My beef is that there are many videos of him playing quite poorly and some people are so precious about him that they can't hear it. As I said if it was someone else playing here there would be very little praise for the performance.
@eurekabach he included in his transcription of this piece a variation Narvaez composed for another theme, not originally intended from the composer to be played together, but it fits well imo, it adds a more lighter feel to the piece
A forerunner. Would the vihuela da mano & the lute have been played, rediscovered without him & Julian Bream ? This piece was his very favo(u)rite and he always played it in concerts. Great thanks !
When I was young I had the habit of playing my right thumb too far behind my fingers ! When I see Segovia's thumb so far in front it reminds me of my teacher telling me to correct my positioning ! Today I find the teaching of classical guitar being too liberal with students playing ! Segovia was super strict !
Judging a legend playing guitar at his late 80s is at least irritating. For all those who "wonder" why Segovia became SOOO famous, well..... it's because he actually changed the whole way the classical guitar was played, introducing more fixed positions and less finger wondering in his transcriptions, innovator in using nylon strings, changing the way fingernails touched the strings and to be honest creating the sound of the classical player as we know it the last 50-60 years. But, my opinion does not count. Search around for J.Williams' ( who actually probably is the best classical guitarist in the world) opinion on Segovia's playing before you jump into speculations.
It's amazing he could play that well, that much of it at 86. I saw him play at 93 and I thought it cruel to him to make him perform at that age. At that point it is an act of love. Some failings of memory but what do you expect - you have how many people at that age who can perform tasks of such complexity?
John Williams learnt a lot of Segovia and was only one of his pupils, in no way the only good and famous one, his opinions about Segovia were just opinions, today he´s and old man, although 11 years younger than Segovia was in this video, and it could be done a judgment about his career and life, and I´m afraid he didn´t half of what Segovia did for guitar and music.
Don't compare john williams with Andrés Segovia, he is miles better, (that doesn't mean that John Williams isn't talented). And if you're gonna judge a incredible guitarist, please, start playing classical guitar, and not megadeth.
I am a chess player and a musician. I have met many older chess players whose minds are sharp as tacks. I have never read of a known chess player in their 60's, 70's, or 80's who have suffered from alzheimer's. In fact it is recommended that to combat debilitating brain diseases one should exercise the brain. Chess is a good way and also playing a instrument is another. I guess saying "proven" is too strong a point at this time.

You do not have the slight idea of whom you are talking about... Segovia was the father of modern guitar playing. When young, he was a monster with the guitar, and even at 86 years old he played beatifully..
@AkiranBlade my fingers are skinny as hell, but barring comes easy to me. But you do need some finger muscle to pull off a perfect bar. And how to train your finger muscles: trying to bar. just kill your fingers repetitively trying to get all the notes...
