Upgrading the internal storage on the Steam Deck isn't too difficult. In fact, it's been made a bit easier on the OLED than the LCD models. I went nuts and put 2TB in mine, and it is AMAZING! Yes, you can get into choice-paralysis having so many games on board, but for travel, it's a great peace-of-mind thing.

      Hey there!
Really? I've watched a few videos and worry about putting a 2TB in there.. I worry i may break something. Post installing the SSD, how does it boot up again? What would i need to do from my end to reset steamos? is there cloud download (similar to Asus rog ally)?

Pro tip, a PS5/PS4 controller on the Deck gives the best latency performance. Some people don't notice, but if the 8bitdo or XBox controllers feel slightly sluggish to you, you WILL notice a difference with a PS5/PS4 controller.

I dont trust Lenovo to make improvements on the Legion Go once newer models come out. Im pretty sure there will be a Go 2 announced in 2024 with new specs so what does that mean for anyone with a Go 1? Plus there is virtually no 3rd party support for this device or community support like with the SD.

Really happy to be back on Steam with Steam Deck. It is, the Nintendo of PC handhelds. They really put those extra touches into it. It's not a big company, that makes many other types of hardware, trying to play catch up. Through the years, I have had many Asus motherboards and video cards, they are solid but Steam, has always had a great gaming service and the deck is integrated into the service wonderfully. The ability, like you said, to be able to pickup/put down the game is key to me and the deck/switch have been flawless at it.

The Steam Deck has the perfect consolized PC gaming experience. It's going to be something that Microsoft needs to catch onto with the way PC handhelds are blowing up right now. As a former Windows Phone owner (remember that?), I remember fondly when Microsoft upgraded to WP 10 and it was a MASSIVE improvement. They did this (even though they couldn't compete with iOS and Android) years ago, so they're not new to the mobile space, they have experience. They can use this experience to at the very least, turn out a tuned up version of Xbox OS or revisit their mobile expertise and create a mobile friendly version of Windows.

I went the ROG Ally route and love it but i Totally understand why a lot of people don't go that route. Armoury Crate interface works well for me, but the issue with non-steam deck portable pc's is that there is no native support for this form factor within windows and i feel like thats a major L on Microsoft's end. Truthfully all we need is a compact/gaming focused NATIVE windows UI. Call it Windows 11 XBOX mode or whatever. Sadly, i don't see this being adressed for at least 2 years. Still, I love my Ally because i believe that portable pc gaming is the future.

What I love about the Steam Deck is that it's like a Gateway or a Bridge to PC Gaming for Console Gamers. Valve clearly put a lot of thought into the design and function of the device. Being able to put it to sleep and resume is a Big deal. Steam OS and Verified Titles is a Big Deal. The OLED is a Big Deal. Battery Life again is a Big Deal. The other solutions, though not bad, I think make more sense to Power users. I'm a PC gamer with a High End Desktop but I'm also a Console gamer. The idea of a Handheld PC that behaves like a Console and fully integrates into my near 20yr old Steam Account Won me Over in a Big Way.

And the Steam Deck production and design is handled by Gabe Newell who is a gamer first. So he knows what gamers want. Meanwhile the ROG and Legion is handled by bunch of business consultants who put features and specs above the soul of a gamer. These things make the Steam Deck stand apart from the rest imo.

  • @grzegorz__

Well, I have kind of similar experience (Steam OS vs Windows). I have (old) Steam Deck and I love it BUT due to some youTube channels I convinced myself that I need ... more powerful handheld. Windows handheld. At that time there was Asus Rog Ally and AyaNeo Geek 1S (also based on 7840U cpu). I didn't like Asus "gaming" design, so I went with AyaNeo Geek 1S.
Maan, I was so excited when it came. It looked stylish, beefy etc.
But then, all of the downsides started popping up. One missconception is that I thought that I will have same / very similar experience using Steam (windows application) as Steam Deck (Steam OS). I coudln't be more wrong. The main difference is that Steam Deck has all the buttons configurable. It is not Xbox360 controller, but controller perfectly tailored to the OS. You click ... and left menu opens, during the game you also can open Steam OS Layer Menus. On Windows handheld it turned out that "xbox" controller button does not behave as you would expect - it doesnt open Steam side menu, it doesn't work when you're in game. The only way to have some kind of UX Consistency is to map any kind of extra button to ALT + F4 / Close App combination. Or install additional programs that will help you map literally every your button to some keyboard shortcuts, but it is rather invasive.
I was really mad at it, because all the biggest youTubers kind of didn't mention it. And yea, it was 800 $ not 400 $ (like steam deck). I expected same UX / UI consistency and more power. (yea, I was wrong ;) ).
If you stream locally (via ie. Moonlight or original Steam Remote) there is also inconsistency in terms of UX. On Steam Deck you're easily able to stop streaming, close the host and it's all cleaned, ok. On windows handheld the only way to ie. exit Moonlight is to ... ALT+F4 (button) which yea, closes Moonlight and puts you back to the Steam (if you add moonlight as non-steam game), but this will leave the mess on host machine. It's like, on Steam Deck my shortcuts / controlls / mappings can be triggered inside Moonlight / host machine, while on Windows Handheld this "xbox 360 controller" only works within windows OS itself, not inside Moonlight / host machine. Yea, I know, it may be confusing BUT it makes a huge difference in terms of UI / UX Consistency.
Also, touchpads. If you like some older games, that originally used mouse etc. then you'll love Steam Deck, you'll love all of the customization options, additional buttons, pads, when it comes to setup controls. Thanks to that you can very nicely play some oldschool RPG games which ie. had a lot of keyboard shortcuts, mouse controlled etc.
And ... If you use Steaming Locally, you'll quickly realise that it is far more comfortable to Steam GAme from your desktop PC and consume 5W power of your handheld, so ie. on Steam Deck you'll be able to play AAA game for hours in 60 fps, without your device making even hot. That's the moment when I realised that ... I don't need more power. Anything AAA related I can stream locally from my PC (WiFi6).
The only benefit of Windows Handheld i see is that:
    - it's easier to mod games (ie. using nexus mods etc.) - so if you love tweaking ie. Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4 etc. then it is easier - very often you can even copy your Desktop PC version. Yes it is doable on Steam Deck but requires more effort
    - mmo, online games sometimes doesn't work at all, or require some additional effort to setup on Steam Deck, while on Windows Handheld they work like out of the box
    - and of course, not all games work via Proton.
Yea, maybe it's about preferences. I realised that there are so many games that I don't necessary need AAA power handheld. Actually I prefer a bit less power, but more efficient, giving more options to play older games etc.
ps. Yea, after a week or two fiddling I had satisfying setup for my AyaNeo Geek 1S (Steam + EmuDeck + EmulationStation) to play modern games, steam games, retro games BUT it required a lot of effort and I still DON'T Like that feeling that I use ... desktop computer ;) I just prefer to Turn ON Steam Deck and have a feeling that I use a handheld (not a desktop computer).

Elden ring and cyberpunk run better on steamOS than windows or Xbox, many games do. Also, every high performance super computer run’s Linux, it’s because Linux is far superior for people that actually understand how to use a computer, it’s like a standard compared to an automatic
