  • Me and my buddy Patrick went out to fish for goliath grouper at Sebastian Inlet. This was our first time targeting this species and it was incredible. These fish are protected so if you ever catch one return it to the water quickly. When we come back next time we will be better equipped to take on this fish. Exactly why I'll never fish the Pier of the inlet. Too many incompetents perfectly willing to cross lines, hook you on the cast etc. I get just as many big hook ups (and more elbow room) on the beach. There's a huge reason why Goliaths are protected. Because way to many Anglers are woefully ignorant of moderate conservation and would just assume wipe em all out.

    I agree there's a healthy population of them, and they can be fish stealers, but I'd like to see them do what they can to maintain the current population, because it seems like about ten years ago the Goliaths learned that they could snack out on invasive Lionfish. I think how they suck them in without biting keeps them from getting stuck by the poisonous fins. At any rate, I used to kill about three Lionfish per lobster diving day with my tickle stick after netting them... but since the Goliaths' population exploded back to healthy levels, I have not seen even one Lionfish while diving off of Stuart. In fact, the single Lionfish that we have seen in the last five years was one we caught on a lure in 135 feet... which is a bit deep for Goliaths.

    • @PoweryFishing
      @PoweryFishing  Před 5 lety

      Bob H yea my father told me how he was reading an article about a diver seeing multiple dead gag groupers on the bottom of the sea floor one time. He than realized that it was the Goliath groupers killing them!👎What a waste hahaha at least eat the fish!😂 So yea it doesn’t surprise me they were killing them! Lol

    • @bobh1208
      @bobh1208 Před 5 lety +3

      That would surprise me if they were what actually killed the Gags, because Goliaths aren't typically biters, they're "inhalers". Sounds like it MIGHT have even been propaganda, by a diver who wanted to be allowed to shoot Goliaths. My grandmother, in the early days of Scuba, actually interviewed a diver she considered credible in the Keys who had been inhaled as far as the start of his tank by a big one, and he had to jab it in the gills with his dive knife to get it to spit his head out of its mouth... and, well, it didn't kill HIM (for what THAT is worth). Interestingly enough, in videos of our artificial reefs, you can see a cloud of baitfish tightly surrounding a lot of the Goliaths. My theory on why this happens is that the adult Goliaths know that if they try to flare their gills to "inhale" the baitfish, the baitfish are small enough that they will just get sucked out between the gillrakers as the gills flare out, instead of going down the Goliaths' throats. And the baitfish "know" that the same is not true for gamefish that could feed on them, which therefore have to keep their distance from the Goliaths (and the cloud of bait around them). (Lionfish, on the other hand, though often as small as baitfish, have big cumbersome fins that probably prevent them from shooting out between the Goliaths' gillrakers, thus allowing the Goliaths to successfully inhale 'em.)
