Diana Was only 15 years old in this performance but she undoubtedly has an old soul... The depth of her voice and emotional connection to her performances are probably a direct result of her life experiences. This amazing young talent has a harrowing yet inspirational story. As a child Diana had to endure a tragic and dark past... She has never known her father and her mother was a abusive alcoholic and who gave birth to twelve siblings, of which eight of them died. Her mother neglected her, did not feed her, would beat her, and even tried to kill Diana on at least one occasion. Eventually her mother beat her severely leaving her with a broken collarbone and near death, and abandoned her on the streets in the middle of the night. Upon being found a then three year old Diana was retrieved by relatives. Because the neglected and abused Diana was non verbal they assumed that she was mentally handicapped and they gave her to a nearby orphanage. At the orphanage a nurse cared for her and grew to love little Diana. Later the woman decided to take Diana in and raise her as her own. Her foster mother then put young Diana into singing courses to help develop her speech. Diana blossomed and quickly became proficient at not only speech and music but also dancing, theatrical performance, and many advanced vocalization techniques. It is through the love and care of her foster mother that we are blessed today with Diana's unique talents. It is a truly heart warming and inspiring resolution to a story that started so traumatically. Diana is now 16 years old, known as a National treasure in Russia, and she is on the verge of international stardom.

Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova. Diana actually turned 16 on 31st May 2019, but was 15 at the time of this performance. The show she is on here is Ты супер! (translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy, the bald guy on the judges panel who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. You may have seen him play piano for Dimash sometimes. Diana's cover of "Rechenka" a Russian folk song, on the same show in 2018 - in which she was just 14 - is something else, and very much worth watching. I know I'm a bit late to be making comments. I don't know if you noticed, as I only saw it a few times in the comments, but she is only 15. Also, while you found the background distracting, many of us felt it perfectly matched her voice, as if she was conjuring wind and nature with her voice, her arm/hand gestures did this as well. I can understand the desire to have a pared down setting, but part of the fasciation with her is that she is so complete, natural given physical ability (contralto, ability to sustain a dropped larynx, etc), the skill to use her instrument (control, breathing, fluidness, etc), her amazing ability (especially for a girl of 15) to emote, to change the tone and colour of her voice to suit the song. Her confidence/stage presence/theatricality to bring emotion to the song and illustrate the song, as a few people have said, her ability to tell the story, to convey the song to you, not just to sing at or for you. She changes all these elements to suit what each song needs and does so not as a cover, but as an interpretation. She literally has it all. At 15.

That was a great reaction. Diana has a cool voice. After all the covers on this song, 3 are my favorites. The originals from Chris back in 89 ( which I fell in love with, back then) Then there's Diana Ankudinova I love how she took & made a big production without letting it overwhelm her & she turned into a great Pop song in a modern way with a little Russian folk song style to it. Ido agree though that a;; the background sounds & visuals it can be a bit distraction, but it still was great. Than there's Angelina Jordan's arrangement & composition of it, she went the exact opposite direction completely redone it & just her on her little keyboard in her room playing 3-4 cords & just telling a story using her voice just amazing. She participated in the contest called You are Super This a special contest for talented kids living without parents ( in orphans houses or adopted by other families).she was abandoned by her native mother, stayed at orphans house and further adopted by a very nice and kind woman who did her best to develop Diana’s talent. Diana has won that contest and now she lives in Moscow and continues her musical education there

Hi Valerie. Diana is an amazing singer , performer and a person.
she is a performer telling her story and that is primary in her performances , she is trained in everything, singing , dancing, acting, comedy, staging, master of ceremonies, yodelling, street performance and costuming and has been doing it all her life. She sings in this with a dropped larynx and polyphonic overtones, giving a 2 voice phase shift, but she can sing in many different styles. There is no effects applied to this performance it isnt allowed, its all her. A unique talent
Thanks so much for analyzing Diana's vocals. She knows how to surprise and be different. Which way and style will she choose? Diana is still young, she is only 16 years old.

If I may make this observation. I've watched quite a few of your videos and you almost always smile when the featured singer starts singing. This time, it seemed like you were a little perplexed by what you were hearing. I hope that's a good sign.
Thank you very much for checking out Diana. She is now only 16 years old. Spoiler, she won this show (it's not the Voice, but sort of similar). Diana reminds me of Yma Sumac. I don't think it's middle eastern sound, it's yodeling. Diana is quite proficient at yodeling.
I watched all your Beste Zangers videos and I agree with what you said about the sound and production on such competition TV shows as this one. You will get many requests to do reactions to Diana's other performances from this show and they are all definitely worth checking out. However, the fantastic thing about Diana is that this girl loves and lives to sing and there are lots and lots of videos on CZcams of Diana singing everywhere, on street corners, in parking lots, in shopping malls, etc. My point is, there are lots of good quality videos of Diana singing with good sound that are not from TV show singing competition where producers and pressure of competition may be an influencing factor. I would like to suggest this video of Diana singing at karaoke, before she was famous or on TV, first song by Edith Piaf and second song is yodeling (in four languages).

I found the initial setting quite distracting. Some posters have misunderstood my comments about effects on her voice thinking that I was implying her sound was manufactured electronically and fake. Not so. Because studio engineers control the EQ and reverb (which are effects) as well as the distracting camera angles and backdrop, it took me a while to REALLY hear her gorgeous voice. That's why it took me a while to smile. She's amazing!

Most of Diana's performances are very theatrical that imo adds to the drama and atmosphere of her song. 'Tomorrow is a lie' just has clouds in the background. 'Rechenka' is amazingly theatrical and it tell the story of the song. She has so many styles to go appropriately with the theme of her songs. Amazing vocals for a 15 year old.

I'm Russian and Native American. I went through a similar situation as Diana but I ran away at 12 and raised myself and became a Physicist in advanced Electronics. Being forced to grow up faster makes you more serious and gives you drive, which Diana Koo' Nova for pronunciation as Igor say's. She has been through alot her voice coach was a Shaymin that's tribal in Russia becausr she couldn't speak from her mother's abuses, her song at the river was a plea to her mother for forgiveness and acceptance for her and her boyfriend. She has learned how to compress her tongue back in her throat to relax her vocal cords for the tones she does and she's really good at it. All she needs now is to win AGT champions.
Anyway it's callef yawning and I truly think she could win AGT champions.

For a few "stripped down" versions you might want to try Tomorrow is a Lie with Igor on piano or Feeling Good where it appears she's singing at a local club or studio. Blizzard also showcases her vocals but is still on the You Are Super talent show with an elaborate backdrop.

Rechenka is a great performance but it's the opposite of what she's asking for there's even more set production in that performance than wicked game. I would recommend "Human" as it's more stripped down. Also my personal favorite "Blizzard" it's short but moving.
Yes! Rechenka is her best peformance, IMHO. She was just 14 when she did that too. It is one of my favorite musical performances of any artist, any genre, I've ever seen, and I listen to A LOT of music. It's also the best showcase of her vocal tallents and control, I think. Throughout, there are moments in that performance that send shivers down my spine.

There's a video where she sings at a piano, I don't remember what song she sang. I'll have to get back to you on that. That would be the one to watch if you're looking for something "stripped down". You said that you feel there was some kind of special effects on her voice, I don't believe there was. This is her voice. It's a shocking to people, but true True.

She obviously has an exceptional voice and talent The sound engineers weren't doing her any favors and I found the entire setting extremely distracting. That said, every time people sing on a mic, there are effects like reverb and EQ that is always part of the equation with amplified singing.

I don’t know if you remember Kate Bush. if you do, did you find that her videos were distracting. From what I remember her videos and performances always had visual effects wind, smoke etc. These were all part of her art and music. I believe that this wicked game video was full of artistic expression not just voice. Diana is not just a unique singer she is also a very talented performer. At fifteen years old she is a phenom.

There are NO effects put on her voice.
What you just witnessed is a voice so unique and rich with tone and domething that only happens once in a thousand years.
I believe the context in which she used the term effect, was self manipulation of the larynx and vocal chords to get the sound she does. In our western culture, the popular styles of singing are raw and less manipulated, but Russia is a very old country, and is composed of multiple and equally old cultures, in Russian culture, music has a more spiritual meaning than here in the US, and not only the words, and sounds, but tones hold a deeper meaning. You can see this in folk music from Eastern Russia, and in the Slavic folk music, where guttural toes and yodel like expressions are used. Some people sing, and others learn to use their voice like a musical instrument, seeking and using different undertones and overtones to accent the music, like a guitar player pinching and pulling on the strings to change the shape of the sound. You are however absolutely correct about the lack of electronic effects. After one of her performances, during the interview, one of the judges asked her if he could hear a few bars form "Dernier Danse" again, and she obliged him a cappella. There was no difference. All of the tones she used in the prior performance were still there.

Dianna is amazing and has amazing range and tone. I agree all the background antics are distracting. For a stripped down version of this song that is equally amazing check out Angelina Jordan's version where she is playing piano. She slows it up & uses a haunting tone that rips your heart out & starts the tears flowing. She really emotes the feelings of this love song, no production tricks, just pure emotion & beauty. There are 2 versions, so get the one showing her playing piano at the beginning, followed by Angelina photos.

By effects do you mean natural effects that she is doing (like the echoes of bi-tonality) or some artificial manipulation? If artificial... I gotta tell you, I’ve watched dozens of professionals react to this song and no one else has ever implied that it’s not all her.
Besides, it’s a talent competition. Why on earth would they allow / facilitate something like that?
Have to agree. This coach should know better than the make the accusations of effects without evidence.
When I said there are effects, I should have said the sound mix on her voice wasn't the best in the beginning. I did not mean to imply that her voice was altered electronically. She obviously has an exceptional voice and talent The sound engineers weren't doing her any favors and I found the entire setting extremely distracting. That said, every time people sing on a mic, there are effects like reverb and EQ that is always part of the equation with amplified singing.

@@VocalSplendorStudios I see, thanks for the clarification. You should try Rechenka from her next. She's 14 in that one. And others have suggested more spartan arrangements that you might like better as well. Her backstory is very sad and unusual. When they took her away from her birth mother at 3 years old she was non-verbal and they thought she might be permanently developmentally disabled. Singing was part of her "therapy" (with stunning results).
