Hi everyone! This video has tons of information crammed into it.
I know it's a lot to digest, but this topic is complex and a simple explanation just won't suffice.

Really enjoyed this video, and would like more in-depth discussion on how to focus deckbuilding towards winning; I have a hard time including some dedicated win con cards in decks that feel like they struggle to get off the ground. Maybe it's quadrant theory taken to an extreme, but I'd rather make sure I get to play than to ensure there's a way to close if I'm winning.

I've been playing MtG since 1995. I'm an old head, and we cut our teeth on ruthless 1v1 duels. There was no politics, and multiplayer games were just for fun. We didn't really care about power levels; it was just six or more of us around a cafeteria table at lunch, slinging spells and having a blast. Serra Angels, Shivan Dragons, Craw Wurms, Hypnotic Specters, Frozen Shades-those games were always bloodbaths. The one thing we always agreed on was play to win. If you had an opportunity to win, you took it, no questions asked.
The game has changed a lot over the years, and I've come to realize that not everyone plays MtG to win. But I still do. If I'm in a tournament with prizes on the line, I'm playing to win. In casual games with people I don't know, I try to match power levels as best I can. But it's hard to guess what kind of deck someone is going to bring. So I bring a range of decks, from jank to cEDH, so I'm prepared for anything. Commander is a social experience, and everyone should have fun. But if you're playing to win, and I'm playing to win, then someone's going to lose. And that's okay.

    • @KugutsuYushiro
      @KugutsuYushiro Před měsícem

As a newer player, one of the problems with just doing play to win is that a cEDH deck that really is the best it could be could cost more than $1000. This is not attractive or exciting at all. There is the proxy option, but even then you have no limits so if you're playing to win then you're just going to have the absolute strongest stuff that can end games extremely fast in a format that has a 100 card deck for a reason. If I don't get to do anything interesting or have a back and forth due to the format, that's an issue too.
This is even before we talk about the powercreep.
But if your local group just agrees to stay in a certain general level, you get around these issues. But it is true that now that you have an arbitrary limit, you have to accept a certain level of cognitive dissonance when you're actually playing the game and trying to win while doing so. And I definitely dislike this aspect, but the alternatives are worse in my estimation.
If the game was balanced much better or there was much more effort spent to avoid power creep and they also put out less content to give then more time to test things so they can make new stuff without powercreep, then yeah it'd be great. Everyone could play to win while still having many viable competitive options. But that's not the reality we have unless a fan creates a format that tries to avoid it. Which is why EDH was even first creates, but then of course WOTC saw the money in it, so now the powercreep.

I like the comment about Pub Stomping. I have accidentally played a deck that is too strong into a blind meta. It doesn’t feel good to win uncontested. Great video. A hard thing for new players is evaluating cards in different scenarios.

I have a few decks all various power levels. When I come to a new meta I typically just play a starter deck just to see what's up. I learned the hard way by bringing a much stronger deck than the meta and then I became almost a permanent arch enemy because people thought all my decks were as strong so I got targeted every game.

This is one of the best videos focusing on the strategy of deck building.
I used to literally just throw the most popular and powerful cards I could in commander in my decks. But this concept of having a specific turn by turn game plan and identifying each card as either enabling or paying off my game plan has made me take out some less synergized expensive cards with cheaper, yet more synergizing cards that have actually made my decks perform better!
This video helped me make some decisions on one of my decks I’ve been struggling to figure out which cards to keep and which to change to improve the deck’s consistency!
Great video! Almost the same as getting a personal coaching session on my deck build! 😅

  • @marshallscot

Aggressive decks are so hard to pilot because not only does the game turn into a 1v3, but the "social contract" works against your optimal strategy. To have the best chance of winning with an aggressive deck, you have to focus down one player at a time as fast as possible.

  • @grantmurdock7385

    Awesome advice, dawg.
I have one deck that bucks the trend I like to shout out: Urtet. Five colors, originally started as 'big myr army go brr' but with budget gates mana. Cool. Then I discover Maze's End. Then Helix Pinnacle. Lux Artillery. Millennium Calendar. Simic Ascendancy. This thing became wacky wincon roulette where I go for whatever I draw first, and the Myr legion supports any of these possible ways to go.
Do I win? Sometimes. Do I get the whole table laughing? Most of the time. That's the real win. It's strong enough to hang, weird enough to scratch that itch, and has that bucket list item on it to get a Helix Pinnacle win. I have been able to sink almost 20 mana into it per turn, but never made to 100... yet.

    • @lauravturner
      @lauravturner Před měsícem

I got my friend into MtG because of Worldfire. She likes chaotic energy, but my other friend got her into YuGiOh. I told her YuGiOh could get stale and if she wanted a game that never stays the same, she should play MtG. A few weeks later, I sent her a few cards like Platinum Angel and Progenitus and Worldfire. Worldfire had only been unbanned that week. She saw the card and was enamoured. She immediately built a 5 colour janky commander deck and made it her mission to cast Worldfire as much as possible, so every tournament became a standoff. 1 damage, which she'd often peace-out with a shockland and leave everyone else to it.
My LGS had opened not long after she started playing, so there was no "Game etiquette" set there. She set the bar. Everyone knew what she wanted to do and everyone had to prepare to for a Worldfire at any moment. No one cared about the land destruction because we all knew she wasn't playing to win. Honestly, she kept the game fun and I love her for it.

You bring up some great points about deck construction. I recently watched a youtube podcast (forget the channel and the guest, sorry) but it was about CEDH Urza, Lord High Artificer being able to win more consistently. The guy basically said that he went from a 25%(ish) win rate to 70%+ because he took certain things OUT of his deck and, instead, focused more on what HE was doing and how HIS board state looked. It was pretty interesting, and most of it was CEDH related, but i think it can almost always be applicable for edh.
I have never liked the idea that ALL decks need ALL of these things. Or you need "X" number of these tools. If you are running far more ramp/card draw, you actually need LESS removal because you are more likely to draw in to it. So it really all depends on the deck. Yes, MOST decks need a good assortment of tools at their disposal, but not ALL decks do. Like you said, maybe its actually better to sometimes play "worse" cards, but are more fun to with and against.
    Cheers, from Canada!

As a longtime Vintage and Legacy player, I appreciate casual EDH precisely because its multiplayer structure and doubled life totals minimize the impact of the extremely fast Aggro and Combo decks that so dominate 60 card play.
You went first, and drop your 4 mana Infinite to generate numberless 2/2s w/ Haste immediately after your T2 untap?
Good news for the table, 2 of your opponents had no response, but the 3rd had a Force of Will. The Infinite goes nonbo, and the Aggro player never recovers from what proved to be a wild overcommitment.
These sorts of hyper-fast, all-or-nothing win attempts are frequently rewarded all the way to the winner’s circle in 1v1 MtG, and while they do still often work in EDH, in 1v1v1v1 they blow up in the user’s face often and spectacularly *enough* to disincentivize Aggro or Combo from taking over FNM at the LGS the way that hyper-fast decks so often rule in 60 card.
I’ve had enough of games regularly being decided shy of 3 full turns to last a lifetime.

I know you addressed it a little bit in the video and also discussed some of the holes in the quadrant system, but I'd be interested to hear your evaluate several cards in the quadrant system, especially when it comes to parity.
A lot of the content creators I've seen use this system seem to oversimplify how cards fit into these categories. I think the biggest issue I've had with it (or at least how ive seen it used) has been when understanding parity/advantage/disadvantage.
In limited, having parity/advantage, especially on board can be relatively understandable, but in commander you almost have to evaluate it on a per-player basis.
I might be in parity on board with one player, meaning that a professional facebreaker's first ability may not be getting me combat damage/advantage that turn FROM THAT PLAYER. But often times there's someone who I'm not at parity with that will allow me to move forward with that card. I've rarely seen board states with complete parity in commander, yet people often assume it's the case when using this system.
I appreciate your thoughtful commander content and your thoughts on this subject. Understanding your deck's goals and tuning them to meet the level of play your group wants can absolutely help improve play experience.
Hope you have a great wedding/honeymoon.

Problem is edh is NOT about winning.... its a CASUAL format. Throw away all this garbage of deck optimization, over tuning, and card power and focus on a balanced power level that doesnt allow Cedh staples as a good start. 1v1 is mentioned a lot in this video. I play edh to NOT care about 1v1 principles. If i wanted to play 1v1 I’ll play duel commander, standard, legacy, etc. For edh, our rule is Fun over winning. Our locals is great at separating edh from cedh and other formats. We all play “over costed, old cards, sub optimal cards, low quality, etc” and have MORE fun. Facts.

"let's play commander, oh wow, look at your $5000 deck popoff, woo hoo.... you won in 3 turns. good for you...." was that fun? For CASUAL, I'd rather play longer games that go down to the wire, or people team up against an archnemesis (without the archnemesis feeling bad) and use cards that are suboptimal so you cant always guess what your opponents are using and that leads to more outlandish effects or plays that you never thought were possible on turn 27 haha THOSE are the types of games my friends and I talk about for years and prove to be the most fulfilling with screams erupting at the table when someone plays a card no one saw coming or finds a combo or strategy for the first time due to synergy and thematic deck building!
