All you ever needed to know about automatic gearboxes / automatic transmission types. I try and cut through some of the waffle and give you a simple guide to automatic transmissions, explaining the pros and cons of each transmission and explaining how they are sometimes branded by different car manufacturers.
Automatic Gearboxes can sometimes bring out the best and worst in a car so we look at the most reliable, the best to drive, and more in this little video. Hopefully, this gives you all you basically need to know about the different types of automatic transmission. What is the best automatic gearbox?

Glad to gave some auto gearbox a little space such a in depth subject , I have driven autos for 30 years and driven all types with mixed
experiences currently driving a Jaguar XF S and totally happy with the gearbox performance ,but as you say you’ pays your money ‘:
thanks for video .
Cheers Ken 👍
Great video. Once rented a Nissan Pathfinder in the US that had a CVT and when you plant the right foot all I got was a lot of noise and not much speed, it was terrible and made overtaking a real gamble. Currently have a Passat DSG and your right about the jerky nature especially at low speed although it never seems to spend any time in 1st gear and has a very short shift into 2nd, but other than that it’s great on motorway. Also have a new BMW 128ti with torque converter, and it’s definitely the best gearbox I’ve had in a car, although the 265hp under the bonnet may have something to do with my assessment on that one. Keep up the great work with these videos 👍
I think the BMW boxes are the very best, I have one on my 4 series and it’s a dream. If your Passat is really jerky and a bit dim witted it may be an issue. Might be worth getting a gearbox service depending on how many miles are on it?
A lot of the US cars are using very old technology, some of the worst autos you can imagine in some of them. A new Toyota CVT is far superior to some of the older CVT tech.
Love your CVT overtaking sound 😂 I'll have that as my new ringtone 👌😂. Yes, the CVT always reminds me of driving with a rubber band. But as you say they're very reliable. Also very fuel efficient as they're tuned to set the revs at the engines peak torque. I had a Clio recently with EDC (efficient dual clutch). It was ok but a little jerky. The torque convertor 7 speed in my (new to me) W204 Merc is the first I've had in many years. They've come on a long way in the last 20 years or so. Electronically controlled it always seems to be in the right gear. It employs torque locking if the rpm of the input and output shafts are matched. It also uses "block changing" where circumstances allow. Very impressive! 👍😁
Yes, they’ve all come a long way in fairness. Far from the horrors on the 80’s. That CVT sounds bought out the inner Alan Partridge in me I think. 😂
Very good vlog. Took me back when I was a lot younger. I had a Ford Capri with an automatic gear box. Nightmare! Lol
Just ordered a new car which has a DCT gearbox. Should be interesting experience
I think you’ll find autos have come on a bit since then 😁 thanks for watching 👍
StepTronic is actually Audi's name for a DCT. TipTronic is their torque converter and MultiTronic is their CVT.
StepTronic = S-Tronic = DSG (DCT)👍
This is helpful..
Thanks
Im thinking of the Mazda 3 tech auto as its got radar automation I believe, and driving on motorways bumper to bumper in glasgow seems to be beating my existing car up, your thoughts please.
I haven’t driven one yet but that system is supposed to be brilliant
Thanks DNAG, good info. FYI had a new A3 s-tronic DISASTEROUS , 3 times in main dealers for mechatronic failures eventually fixed under warranty (saving me 2k ?!) thanks for nothing VAG.
Really wow, I had a few of those, always served me well but I have heard a few similar stories in the last.
Golf DSG and overall I like the gearbox. Quite responsive and mostly smooth. It isn't perfect though. Worst thing is low speed manoeuvres. The car will try and go into 1st/reserve gear and move at idle rpm speed. In reverse that's quite quick. You can brake to slow it down but then it will drop the clutch and you'll come to a halt. Then the automatic handbrake can kick in. Doesn't take that much getting used to and usually now done as a series of 3 or 4 moves. In 1st creep is slower and more manageable than when reversing.
Then there is quick acceleration. If you want to accelerate reasonably quickly do not fully press the throttle. It'll shift down 2 or 3 gears and you'll have 2 seconds of absolutely nothing followed then by quick acceleration. Press the throttle half way instead and you'll quickly kick down one gear and accelerate briskly past.
I don’t get any of those issues on our Touran DSG. Have you had it check over mate?
@@DefinitelyNotAGuruInteresting. It's a 2020 car (1.5 150bhp) with under 10k miles. I hired a new Ibiza (1.0) on holiday with DSG and it was actually worse than mine so I suspect it's normal with petrol cars and the DQ200. Which DSG have you got? But then I'm used to manuals so creep is new to me. But the creep is quite pronounced on the golf for sure. Has a really low 1st and I think tries to use that rather than slip the clutch to minimise clutch wear. Once you get used to it becomes easy to manage. Mines the 7 speed dry clutch box. I think it's the DQ200. I did drive an A4 2.0tdi 2021 and that has wet clutch and the creep was less pronounced. If the touran is a diesel it'll probably be wet clutch. Despite my minor and probably slightly exaggerated quibbles I much prefer it to a manual for everyday use. Did find torque converter smoother around town under 10mph but like you say they use more fuel. Economy wise I had 1.4tsi Leon previously with similar power and this DSG uses a bit more fuel in town (35ish v 38) but less on a run (50ish v 47) thanks to a long 7th gear. So both average mid 40s mpg overall.
@@paultasker7788 ah ok. We’ve got a 2018 1.6 diesel VW Touran, only 115bhp. to be honest, I never give the gearbox a second thought as it works great.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru in-between the Leon 1.4 and this golf estate 1.5 I had a Leon ST 1.6tdi 115 manual and you've definitely picked the right transmission. The manual only has 5 very long gears with a gaping hole in-between 3rd and 4th in particular!
@@paultasker7788 too many pedals for a bloke with a destroyed left knee too! 👍👌
I guess people that only passed their test using an automatic car are quite fortunate really given that all EVs are effectively automatic…..😊
Yes, should save a few quid on driving lessons.
EAT is a torque converter and it is a good gearbox 👍
New one is good, yes
Ah yes the EAT8. I have the older EAT6 and while it is good overall it does lack the refinement of the newer box with a few more noticeable shifts and occasional jerks. Thanks for your video I learnt a lot about the other options to consider when it comes time to change cars.
@@jgreen8339 no problem, thanks for joining in 👍
Good video, i'll stick with the good ole torque convertor
if it aint broke!
Citroen auto gearboxes are designed to malfunction on British roundabouts 🤣😂😝. They’re tres bon on French roads 😉!
Viva la France 🇫🇷
S tronic is not a torque convertor, it's a DCT
Yes, I know that better than anyone. Brain not engaged during filming :(
Get a manual and you’ll grow hairs on your chest 💪
I’m hairy enough, just not on my head
