    What do you think has changed the most in Bowls over the last 20 years? Let me know in the comments below!

      BPL format that you've used in some clips would be a pretty radical change I reckon

      Probably the colours available for bowls now and the different bowling shoes available. Shirts can now be almost any colour but we're still stuck with grey or white bottoms and I'd like to see team colours like they have in Australia.

    Definitely the use of colours in clothing and bowls themselves. Just what is needed to attract bowls to all age groups. The new format of sets rather than first to 21 makes for a more exciting game to watch

    Things have certainly changed for the better but still further to go to make it all inclusive.I have been bowling for 41 years and love all the changes and the fact younger people are now joining is wonderful to keep our sport alive for generations to come.

      When you say "more inclusive" exactly what do you mean? Ladies dress code was changed to allow ladies to wear trouser so that ethnic minorities could play. BUT how many ladies from the ethnic community do you actually see playing?

    I played Crown Green as a teenager in the early 70's. I was one of three teenagers in the team of twelve players. The rest were my father's generation mid thirties up to around fifty. There was no dress code, as a teenager I was wearing platform shoes and flares on the green. A few years ago at 59 I joined a flat green club to find myself one of the youngest in the club. Pretty much all Crown is played singles 21 up. Games last from 15 to 40 minutes. As a player you are bowling all the time, it's maybe not the same social experience but playing is much more enjoyable. Maybe I should move back up north.

    I play for a church shortmat bowling club over here in Northern Ireland and have only ever tried full length indoor/outdoor bowls a few times at the indoor bowling stadium in Ballymoney Co Antrim and the council outdoor bowling greens in Portrush also Co Antrim. I remember like it was only yesterday the first Monday in September 1983(whatever date it was) when I started High School at 11 years of age in the morning and threw my very first bowl when I joined my first club that evening. I am now 50 years old and my Dad,who started playing a year before me, is still playing at 81 years old. Although I have heard all the myths about bowls being only played by pensioners one thing that happens over here that doesn't exactly disperse that rumour is that my nearest outdoor bowling club leave for away matches at 6.00pm on Mondays-Fridays. How can people particularly those in their 20s to 30s be expected to work and leave for a match at supper time. This is why I never joined an outdoor club. Also can anyone tell me is there one type of bowl for shortmat bowls and another type of bowl for full length indoor/outdoor bowls ie weight, size and bias or is to do with players individual preference? Also funny story, I remember seeing the blue rink at Potter's Resort for the first time on a TV in an electronic shop and thought that there was something wrong with the TV untill I went home and saw it on my own TV.😂😂. Honest,true story ,SCOUTS HONOUR!

    Hi Daniel,
    I'm really liking these videos and your style. We really need more bowls content on CZcams from younger people like yourself.
    I started playing in July 2021. The biggest problem I have with bowls clubs is the amount of dogma and sheer incorrect nature of things that people say. Having had success in American Pool (was in the top 16 in the country until retiring), you learn fast who is worth listening to and who to ignore. I learned fast that playing for 15 years doesn't always mean a lot as some of the bowlers don't have the flexibility that you would expect someone with all that experience to have.
    I can read a head incredibly well. I was used to playing Straight Pool where you are constantly looking at a head with 8-14 bowls and looking for ways to develop. It means I can see shots that other people think are crazy. I also think more in terms of percentage play, but if you even mention percentages to an older player they just cannot compute it.
    One incident almost made me quit because it angered me that much. We were one down, and I suggested that we should concede the end as there was no way to improve it, only to make matters worse. Skip ignored the danger and ended up giving the other team five shots, totally jeopardising our position in the game.
    I find it hard to deal with those who cannot see the game in a modern way. They look to all the old books for bowls and deride Patrick Hulbert as being 'too advanced'. Patrick's book is the greatest book on bowls in my opinion as it talks about psychology and warming up, which are both important.
    Sorry for my war and Peace, but I find it very difficult to communicate about bowls with anyone locally who has the kind of drive and determination to succeed that I have and so this was a good chance to say some things. 🙂

      Hey Barry, I'm glad you liked the video! What I want to be able to do with this channel, is bring the younger audience in and also have a platform to work with EIBA or Bowls England to push the sport into a new age. Whether that happens or not is a different thing, but I really want to aim for it.
      The sport will develop over time but I understand your frustration in what you were mentioning. It will adapt over time but what I'm worried about is the sport adapting too late

    Daniel, I am a new bowler and when you come from rugby and boxing it was quite embarrassing due to the old reputation of old and stiff closed club. I am really enjoying my adventure into this sport which is ever changing each time you get on the rink. Slower, faster, narrow, wide etc etc. Every day is a learning curve and not the easy sport I thought it would be. I hope your video's get to the younger people so we can shake up this embedded (Only for retired people) syndrome.

      I can relate to you Paul although in my case I also love American Football🏈 which is REALLY unusual over here in Northern Ireland. I started playing bowls in September 1983 and got into American Football 🏈 about a year later. I played a little American Football in my late twenties and I still love these two sports. Talk about two extreme sports!!!! Don't be embarrassed. I also am a fan of the rock band Def Leppard AND the love song band Air Supply and am I embarrassed? Heck NOOOO!😂😂😂

    Just joined bowls at 59...I'm considered young at my club. Why not aim it at all ages. Agreed let's appeal to the younger people as well. This is a great sport where we can all compete regardless of age sex or even disability against each other

    • @danielhandover
      @danielhandover  Před rokem +1

      100% agree with you we do need to get all ages involved. However, we do need to target the younger audience more as there seems to be less potential interest for them. The more players the better at the end of the day but the age demographic seems to be getting older which we want to try and reverse.

    I feel like Bowls needs a Darts style revival, bowls in my opinion is much more exciting of a game but its sadly still represented as a retirement hobby. I think that Australia is heading in the right direction with their indoor format, the sport just needds to survive the next five years or so and i think it is in with a chance. Unfortunately in the uk local clubs are suffering from a lack of membership, not only of older players, but new players too. I really hope the sport continues, ive been lucky enough to play in a fantastic local team, even managed to take home a few club trophies the last couple of years:)

    • @danielhandover
      @danielhandover  Před rokem

      I completely agree. It needs to be changed and represented differently. It's a long process but I think it can be done. It just needs to be small steps rather than changing it drastically over a few years.

    Hi Daniel, what you say about the "old" dress code is only correct to some degree. Having skirts measured is true but really only happened if you got to The All England Finals. Not so true for club matches etc. My wife was fortunate to get to Leamington in 1988 at a very young 43 years of age. She and her team had to stand before a table of three ladies and remove there blazers. If there bra's could be seen through there blouses then they had to either play in there blazers or purchase another blouse. They could only wear stud earrings (no dangling versions). If when they bent over you could see the back of there knees, the skirts were too short and they could not have long hair. And then the powers that be were wondering why they could not encourage young people to play. What carry on!!

    Still a long way to go to muzzle the pompous, pedantic pennant players and their joy in making up rules that have little if anything to do with fair play on a bowling green and in fact turn reasonable people away from the game.
