  • This video is about learning to play Lawn Bowls. Aimed at beginners or improvers.
    If you want to learn to play bowls and live in the Farnborough (Hampshire) area, go to the following website:
    farnboroughbowls.co.uk (summer outdoors)
    or email me at:
    lawnbowlsforfun@gmail.com
    I mention Rushmoor Indoor Bowling Club, but sadly that club no longer exists, so my indoor bowling club is now Camberley and District Indoor Bowling Club.

      That is great to hear. I played a chap last week who is also 90, although he looked much younger, he also played amazingly well. There are not many sports where you can play competitively at 90, but this is what makes bowls such a unique sport. I also watched a game a few years ago between a lady in her 80's and a young lad still in his teens, again, not many sports provide that opportunity. The experienced lady won too, her short jack shots were awesome, and although she struggled on the longer ones her experience got her through. What a great game it was. I hope you continue to enjoy the game for many years.

    Thank you Alec for your brilliant videos. Your manner and delivery of explanations is superb. I have been playing bowls for about 5 seasons around Covid and am reasonable, but inconsistant at times. I feel it doesn't hurt to go back to basics occasionally to try and get out of bad habits picked up from listening to, well intended, advice from others. Your videos and presentation are helping me iron out my inconsistency. Thank you. As an aside, our daughter once lived in Fernhurst and played saxophone for the Rushmore Concert Band.

    Hi Alec, I really enjoyed your video and the information was spot on but - size of the bowl/s were not mentioned! When I first took up the game with tuition from a mate who used size 3 bowls, but after buying myself a set I found I required a smaller bowl, so I bought a size 2, I am now down to a size one which I find better to hold in my hand! But finding the that right size of bowl for me had cost me! Bowls for fun is spot on! Members are great win or lose, not like my golf mates who can't take it when they lose! I love this game, but sad that my first full season never was due to this virus! I was looking forward in joining a team, or pairs etc this season, now we are finding that the indoor bowls may not start till January up here in Scotland! I hope to click onto your other videos Alec!

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 3 lety

      Hi Alan, yes, it is very important to use a size of bowl that is best for you, so many players use bowls that are simply too big for their hand. I also use size 1, but started using 5's as that was what I was told I needed. let's hope next year we can play normal bowls. Cheers.

    Just started last week, had one taster session and 2 coaching lessons. We have been told you have to have both feet on the mat when you line up, but can step off when one foot when you actually bowl.

      Hi Robin, I think some coaches like to stress how important it is to think about the shot you are about to take, so they suggest you stand on the mat and then prepare yourself, but part of the preparation can then mean only one foot (or part of one foot) being on the mat before you start your delivery. I myself have my right foot on the mat, but the left foot is slightly in front of the mat to one side. The rule from the Laws of the Sport of Bowls states: 7.1 Before delivery a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of at least one foot on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the mat.

    I'm here because of a Homestead mission in Assassin's Creed 3 where you have to play this game. I didn't understand it. I thought I did but I was off. I was throwing the bowl at the jack trying to hit it, then the jack would fly away. I thought hitting it was the object. Thanks for the correction, hopefully I'll win next time.

    Hi Alec, tried my first taster session at the club open day last weekend, now looking forward to more coaching. I just wanted to ask when you were bowling on the forehand your right foot pointed to he right, in the direction you wanted to bowl, but on the back hand your foot pointed straight down the green and you seemed to twist slightly to deliver the bowl. Is there a technical reason for that or is it just a personal thing? At this stage I’m keen to know everything about the basics. Loved your video and have clicked subscribe.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      I face the direction I am bowling, and try to have my feet pointing that way as well, but sometimes it is more comfortable having my feet at an angle, however, my body is still pointing in the direction I am bowling, well mostly anyway. :)

    I’m an avid lawn bowler and certified instructor like Alec. It’s a great game, easy to learn and a game one can play for a lifetime. But, we’re simply not going to attract new (& young) bowlers by playing games to 21 ends. The world has changed! People now are attracted to activities that are of short term duration. If lawn bowling continues to play in a fashion consuming 2+ hours, we’re not going to attract the new bowlers to which Alec refers in his excellent videos! Q. Why does a singles match play to a set number of points while the other disciplines (pairs, triples & fours [rinks]) play to a set number of ends?

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 2 lety

      Yes, I could not agree more. There has been a step in the right direction this year with pairs and rinks Nationals and County games being reduced from 21 to 18 ends, and yet triples is still 18, which does not make sense. 16 ends would be better for triples. But will it stay like that? I have heard that maybe not, but that would be a mistake in my opinion. I know many bowlers who now only play indoors as they like the 2 hour format. Although I know players who do not want change. So either way you will not please everyone. But to encourage new people, I agree with you, games must be of a more reasonable length, certainly not 3 hours which can be the case.

    Thanks Alec. Can you give me a tip on how to judge the distance of the bowl I’ve just thrown, is to the jack? If I am standing on the mat, I cannot tell if I am 2 ft or 5ft short of the jack. I have a hard time judging my weight and adjusting accordingly. Thanks 🙏🏻

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      Yes, it is hard to judge distance, I agree. If there is someone down that end, ask them if you are not sure, in fact a brief indication of length should always be given by them, as often you have no idea. The times I have been wrong is countless, so if in doubt, ask, or visit the head. Thanks George.

    Hi Alec, I have just taken up the game (July) last year, then indoor bowls up until the virus shut us down. I found through time (games) the secrete in the delivery is getting the right knee and bowl down low as possible to the grass to have any chance in making my intended line of aim! But I am 70 years young, very active every day, but find it hard to get low to the ground constantly at each throw of the bowl, I tried M King stance and it felt good and comfortable, but again finding it hard to throw with constant accuracy. So any tips in how to get down low without loosing balance! Cheers!

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 3 lety

      Hi Alan, I agree, the secret to consistency is to get down as low (but comfortably) as possible so the bowl rolls onto the surface rather than bounce there from higher up. I now use a fixed stance myself as I find I am more consistent using that method. I also see a lot of bowlers take a huge step forward which is not ideal as the balance can be an issue. With me balance is a big issue, so I do know how it affects the bowl.

    I am 43 years old and I start to learn how to play lawn bowl now?

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 2 lety

      Yes, it is a shame more younger people don't play, but things are changing slowly. In fact the best players in the UK all tend to be younger, but it is still a fact that most are in the 50+ age group. I think the dress code in the UK has not helped, but thankfully clubs are changing to coloured strips now, so that will help. In Australia they are well ahead of us on that front, but we are getting there, slowly but surely. :)

    It’s sending down the jack I am having the biggest problem with , it always seems to go off one side or the other & sometimes out of bounds , do you think it’s the way I’m holding it ,I’ve not been told to hold it like you do ,I will give that a go today when I go for a session

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, losing the line with a delivery of the jack can happen. On my first video I show the best method to hold the jack, (see 8 minutes in) which although it won't guarantee to solve the problem, should help. So three fingers underneath and the thumb on top. I hope it helps.

    The front of the mat must be 2 meters from the ditch? 8:15
    Should it not be the back of the mat which should be 2 meters from the ditch?

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 7 měsíci

      No, it is the front of the mat, when placed on the green, that needs to be a minimum of 2 metres from the ditch. Although I know some think it is the rear part of the mat once placed on the green, but that is incorrect. Yo can of course take the mat up the green, as long as the front of the mat is not closer than 23 metres from the 'T' at the other end of the green. Thanks for the question.

    • @DN-kz7xl
      @DN-kz7xl Před 7 měsíci

      @@LawnBowlsforFun Thanks. Now I am still confused. If the front of the mat is at the 2 meter mark, then the back will "protrude" backwards towards the ditch on the end one is bowling from. Thus one could be bowling from e.g. 1.6 meters from the ditch?
