I wasn't planning on making a video about bowls, but I recently found out that an old acquaintance of mine passed away recently.
His favourite sport was Crown Green Bowling, so this video is a tribute to him.
RIP Frank Green, you were always a gentleman to me, and I won't forget the kind lessons you taught me.

Looks like professional Bocce ball
I think bocce, boules, pentanque and this have pretty much the same idea, but with regional variations comes different rules.
I was the Captian of my High School Bocce team in my senior year. I can tell you that it is different. Then again, Special Olympic bocce ball is different then the bocce ball played in the Villages.
Well, I guess maybe a bocce video is in order. *grin*

Curling was derived from lawn bowling (which is by far the older sport).

You know what the funny thing is? There are bowling greens everywhere where I live (Crown Greens) but I never stopped to think that people might not have actually heard of this?

It’s not exactly obscure. In the UK there are probably more bowling greens than, foe example, 10 pin bowling alleys by an order of magnitude at least 20:1 (I would say more, that is a conservative guess) and I would say 10 pin is probably more accessible to many people as it is the type of sport you can just turn up and play.

Lawn bowls is hardly obscure.
@@NinhLyUK You won't see that many in ireland(south),though i know a good few that play it.In northern ireland its much more prevalent.Of course we have road bowling which is very different animal
As someone who has been playing Crown Green Bowls for Thirty One Years (I'm 42 so I started young ish) I'm always fascinated to see any video on Bowls especially Crown Green which is way less popular around the world. Decent Video of the Game I love

Yeah I agree, it would be great to see it back on the Box again. Iv played Flat and Indoor but give me a Green with a decent Crown and I'm like a pig in you know what.
Other inspirational video, Ninh! My fiancee and I played bowls tonight for the first time. An indoor carpet set that I ordered off of Etsy that came from Australia. It was a lot of fun! I had first played the sport when I was child visiting Southampton, UK. I love it!

Yeah, Crown Green is generally played in the north where I live. It can get quite lively.

In the states we play a game called bocce (I've heard it's from Italy). Same rules as flat green bowls but the balls are a little smaller and evenly weighted. Nice video!

In the United States, you also play Lawn Bowls and have a National Association Bowls USA. Lots of Lawn Bowling greens in Arizona and California as well as other states. Different than Bocce but has some similarities.

I’m from Switzerland, and we have a very strange traditional sport called “hornussen” in german or maybe “hornussing” in english, which directly translates to horneting, derived from the bee-like insect the hornet, maybe you could make a video on it in the future, I find it very funny ;)

Hey, Ninh. Nice work. Will you make a video about various types of boules (petanque, rafa, jeu provancal) too? I am glad you are working on these series again. It would be also cool to see rules of padel, tchoukball, indoor field hockey, crossminton, indoor cricket, touch rugby, rounders, roller hockey, etc.
I wasn't planning on it, admittedly. As always, if I get enough demand maybe.
The problem is also is finding video footage to support the script.
I.e. rounders, it's not played professionally and there's no quality video footage around to make it. So I'd have a tough time making a video with no examples to show.

The general public says it isnt a sport, but it you look at what actually occurs during Marching Band and compare it to the definition of a sport, you will see that it is a sport
That's the thing about sports ... almost anything with a competitive element could be officially classed as a sport.

One question: in the game I watched, when the jack was struck into the ditch it was replaced onto the green on one of a number of “spots”. You did not cover this mechanic. Can you explain?

Interesting. This looks like a summer version of curling. Just as curling is "chess on ice", bowls is "chess on grass".

But being real with out offense anyone, This is a good activity for retired old people.

Both games have middle ages origins, but who influenced who is a point of contention.
In curling they have a micrometer used to measure the distance of stones from the pin.
How do they decide when two woods look equidistant from the jack?
We have measuring tools too. Whether strings, specialized tape measures, or laser devices - they are used to determine which bowl is nearer the jack. Outside of tournament play - mutual agreement (gentleman's/gentlelady's agreement) often carries the moment rather than a formal measurement.

Ninh Ly ; being an Italian-American there was many a time when we played on grass. But I get your point; an “official” Bocce match is played in a rectangle patch of dirt or sand boxed off with wood, that is around half-a-foot high.

I doubt they'd be allowed ... Crown Green Bowls are significantly smaller than Lawn Bowls, so you might not be allowed to use them. That said, if you are allowed to use them, prepare to be confused for the first few bowls as your woods will curl in strange and wonderful ways on a crown! One you figure it out, it's a lot of fun!

Here's one for all you flat and crown bowlers out there.Have you ever heard of Short Mat Bowling? It is a shorter,portable version of bowls where the Jack is placed on a middle line instead of being thrown out and instead of a real ditch i.e one below the playing surface there is a "flat"ditch with a three sided fender(usually wooden) at the back of this ditch. As the mat is a lot shorter than standard bowling mats a wooden "Spinner" is in place half way down the mat. If this block is hit the players bowl is stopped and removed from play Apart from these slight differences the rules concerning scoring shots, touchers and bowls in play are the same as regular bowls.This form of Bowls is very popular over here in Northern Ireland.I play this version only and have done so for 37 years although a lot of short mat bowlers play regular indoor and outdoor flat green bowls too.The mat is rolled up and all equipment is stored away when the church hall's,sports hall's etc floor is require for something else.

I see a bunch of people comparing this to Bocce. While the idea is the same (get close to a target ball) there are some key differences: Bocce can be a tossing game while Bowls is a rolling game. PLEASE do not play Bocce on a Bowls green - You can easily put a bunch of depressions in the surface and make it unplayable for weeks. The green gets tracks in it just from the bowl rolling over the grass and even those tracks have an effect on the game, so a divot from a Bocce ball is very, very bad.
Bocce is also played with a spherical ball, while Bowls are cut slightly egg shaped to create a bias. In fact there is an international standard bowl that all bowl manufacturers have and test new models against. In order to be legal, a bowl must curve MORE than the standard.
You'd be surprised just how much strategy there is in this game, just from the addition of bias. One well delivered bowl can take all the points away, change where you aim, or simply erase all your progress that end, so you have to be careful and pick your shots wisely.

That's mainly the indoor championships that colour the green blue - to make it stand out it from the green coloured woods.
In most other games, the green is ... green.
This sport is actually very similar to Petanque, a very popular precision sport in France, and the most worldwide practiced of the 3 disciplines of Boule Sports (the 2 other disciplines beeing Bocce and Sport Boule).
Did you actualy know that untill 2013, the World Bowl Federation was actually part of the International Boule federation (CMSB) and Bowl was their 4rth discipline? I don't really know why they quit it, they had everything to loose by dooing that...
(CMSB is an IOC recognized sports which means it has at least a hundred of federations throughout the world, ten of thousands affiliates and a significant audience including in the medias) (and it could possibly become someday an additional sport in the olympics...)
I believe that the sport of bowls has several governing bodies?
But I don't have it down as similar to petanque, boules, bocce etc because those sports are played in dirt and you throw the ball. Bowls is played on grass and you have to bowl the ball.
Though the sports are similar in objective, but in my opinion, are different.
@@NinhLyUK No, Bowls has a single Worldwide governing body (it's not a sport that much spread worldwide to have that many federation). It just was part untill 2013 of the World Boule Confederation (CMSB). It's a confederation that actually regroup all the international governing bodies of the most famous Boule type of sports. Today it only comprises the federations of Petanque, Boule Sport and Bocce. But untill 2013 World Bowls was also part of CMSB. I really don't understand why they have quit this confederation: it's an IOC recognized one! (whereas none of the World federations that are part of CMSB are recognized by the IOC) They don't communicated on their website for the reason they did so, and do not seem to be too eager to telle the history of the federation (other Worldwide federations usally do so on their websites)...
I can agree with you on the fact that Bowl beeing the only Boule game played on grass makes it different from the other games. But still, it was similar enough to be part (for some time) of the the CMSB who's a Boule Sport Type Sovereign body). If you have acquaitances with people playing Bowl at a competitive level, perhaps you could ask them?
My theory is that Bowls actually caused problems with the other federations amongst the CMSB because it's the only one requiring a grass field to play. When it came to organizing a World championship, it was probably easy to do so with Boule, Petanque, Bocce, but demanded a higher investment for Bowls to have their proper lanes for playing. World Bowls probably asked to the other CMSB to help finance this for the Championship, and the three other federations probably refused, not seeing why they should provide more money for the instalations of Bowls than the money required for their own dirt lanes... World Bowls probably saw that they were kind of odd amongst the other CMBS sports, and that they were the costly federation of the group, and decided therefore to leave in 2013...
It's just my theory. It could be wrong. I'm just actually asking just in case you might have known about this (or if you know someone who knows about it)
