    I played Crown Green as a teenager in the early 70's. I was one of three teenagers in the team of twelve players. The rest were my father's generation mid thirties up to around fifty. There was no dress code, as a teenager I was wearing platform shoes and flares on the green. A few years ago at 59 I joined a flat green club to find myself one of the youngest in the club. Pretty much all Crown is played singles 21 up. Games last from 15 to 40 minutes. As a player you are bowling all the time, it's maybe not the same social experience but playing is much more enjoyable. Maybe I should move back up north.

    I just play indoors now and I use Henselite Tiger II. When I did play outside I used Henselite Classic. I liked the hook finish. Years ago I was playing in an open triples event, in which I was skipping. My number told to go on my forehand, as there were short bowls on the backhand side. As I knew my classics would get around the front woods I played my backhand, as the jack was more in the open on the backhand and I drew the shoot thanks to the hook finish. If you are in doubt what bowls will suit you ask a members of your club to try their bowls. The other day that happened to me, at the end of a club comp I was playing the marker asked me if he could try my Tiger IIs and I was happy to let him try them.

    If I'm going to play a game of bowls i want to draw the shot by bowling to the jack,not firing the jack into the ditch on the off chance I pick up a shot or by burning the end altogether. Far more enjoyable. Not that desperate to get my name on the winners board by firing straight bowls.

    Let's not forget about how wind makes a HUGE difference with outdoor bowls. A strong crosswind, where you can pretty much aim straight at the jack with the crosswind keeping it straight. And also alternating headwind, tailwind with each end and how the much a player has to change the weight.

Main, my main problem is that I’m partially blind so it’s very hard when you can’t see the end where the Jackie is I can see up to about 78 m so just a little bit behind the block in the middle. • @davidgiles4572

    One question I can't get my head around is, if the mat is moved up the green so it is a shorter jack to aim at, should I make my green narrower, wider or the same but just take weight off? Or should I adjust the green AND the weight? I am confused as somebody told me to aim out wider and somebody else to aim narrower. I assume the weight is reduced in either scenario as the jack is closer? Maths was never my strong point and apparently it is all in the angles!

    • @Seventh_Son_Music
      @Seventh_Son_Music Před 9 měsíci

      Hi there. Your line should be the same. An implication of this is that on a shorter end, the bowl shouldn’t go out as wide…this is because the bowl will follow the same (correct) line but will slow down and turn in at a quicker rate. Hope that makes sense, just remember, the line should be the same

    • @munchkin143
      @munchkin143 Před 9 měsíci

    • @danielhandover
      @danielhandover Před 10 měsíci

      Hey Dun, It can again vary on a few different aspects of the green. Different answers show how the sport is played differently by several people and finding an aiming point should be something you vary rarely change unless the jack is moved off center. The weight is the main variable that should change depending on the length :)

    • @LawnBowlerUK
      @LawnBowlerUK Před rokem

      If your grip and delivery isn’t the same a wobble can affect the bias. There are also inconsistencies outdoors that mean a half inch wider and it just won’t turn at all. The last possibility is that there’s a problem with your set of bowls, for instance if it’s a very old set the bias may not be the same with all 4 bowls

    • @danielhandover
      @danielhandover Před rokem

      Skittle has got some really good points there. Delivery is a big factor. A small wobble of the hand can have a very very big impact at the other end of the green. Different green lines and wear on the green can also have a big impact

  • @AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool

    Hi Daniel, I'm really liking these videos and your style. We really need more bowls content on CZcams from younger people like yourself. I started playing in July 2021. The biggest problem I have with bowls clubs is the amount of dogma and sheer incorrect nature of things that people say. Having had success in American Pool (was in the top 16 in the country until retiring), you learn fast who is worth listening to and who to ignore. I learned fast that playing for 15 years doesn't always mean a lot as some of the bowlers don't have the flexibility that you would expect someone with all that experience to have. I can read a head incredibly well. I was used to playing Straight Pool where you are constantly looking at a head with 8-14 bowls and looking for ways to develop. It means I can see shots that other people think are crazy. I also think more in terms of percentage play, but if you even mention percentages to an older player they just cannot compute it. One incident almost made me quit because it angered me that much. We were one down, and I suggested that we should concede the end as there was no way to improve it, only to make matters worse. Skip ignored the danger and ended up giving the other team five shots, totally jeopardising our position in the game. I find it hard to deal with those who cannot see the game in a modern way. They look to all the old books for bowls and deride Patrick Hulbert as being 'too advanced'. Patrick's book is the greatest book on bowls in my opinion as it talks about psychology and warming up, which are both important. Sorry for my war and Peace, but I find it very difficult to communicate about bowls with anyone locally who has the kind of drive and determination to succeed that I have and so this was a good chance to say some things. 🙂

      Hey Barry, I'm glad you liked the video! What I want to be able to do with this channel, is bring the younger audience in and also have a platform to work with EIBA or Bowls England to push the sport into a new age. Whether that happens or not is a different thing, but I really want to aim for it. The sport will develop over time but I understand your frustration in what you were mentioning. It will adapt over time but what I'm worried about is the sport adapting too late

I think that Australia is heading in the right direction with their indoor format, the sport just needds to survive the next five years or so and i think it is in with a chance. Unfortunately in the uk local clubs are suffering from a lack of membership, not only of older players, but new players too.
