- A milestone in this aircraft rebuild. The engine is started and ran for just under 1 hour. Testing and verifying sensors, and most importantly, the fuel pressure at all RPM settings.
Follow along as I rebuild, repair, and upgrade a Challenger 2 ultralight airplane. Ultimately I will be flying this airplane into the north country of Canada, on fishing and camping trips, as soon as she is ready to fly.

Something I didn't mention in the video, is why the engine didn't start up as quickly as I expected. Which is why I NEED a checklist. Well....in my excitement to get it started, I forgot to turn the key on! LOL Yup...mags were off! DOH! Maybe next time I'll do a blooper reel at the end and show the screwups, so everyone can have a good laugh like I did, and learn from it as well.
High Five! Great milestone on the project I am happy I was there to enjoy the moment last weekend. Next big milestone....Take off!
Beautiful panel. Looks like this could be the first IFR-certified Challenger!
Unfortunately not in Canada. Day VFR only. But it will be very capable.
Hearing protection needed, but was nice to see the engine come to life.
I should have worn hearing protection. You are right. Next engine start I will.
Your panel is worth more than my challenger! I love it!
LOL, I've had that pointed out to me from other Challenger 2 owners at this airport. Cheers.
Great video! I'm glad we were there!
You had a cameo appearance in it. Does that mean I need to pay you royalties? DOH! Are you a member of ACTRA or SAG? LOL (it was fun getting it running finally)
glad u got it going bud a few pointers though from 30 yrs experience ,,i think urs is twin plug version even so we defo find using some of strap over the plug caps can really help keep caps on .keep an eye on belt tension .next biggy is carb mixture ensuring that is right -u cannot rely on cht or even egt plug chops and then plug colour .did u test both mags ? heres a check list i am working on = Challenger pre take off check list
Chokes off
Both Ign on
Controls
Brakes
Doors locked
Mag check
Fuel pressure check
Enough fuel
Oil in fuel
Rpm check full power
Seat belt
Set QNH QFE
DAMN! That was great to see.
Thanks
Need to put CHOKE on the pre-start checklist.
Yup! I'm working on a checklist that I will have laminated and in the airplane.
...and may the best woman win!
Sounds sweet
Thanks.
Glad to see you got it running.
I always choke just enough to get it running then turn close the choke.
Electric fuel pump i prime for 3sec before starting, on take off and landing then it’s used as a backup.
Egt not working could be a simple wiring issue or that they are bad.
You definitely look a lot happier now that it’s running.
Tracking down that EGT issue won't be hard. One item I'm concerned about is the reduction drive belt tension. It rattles like heck when you retard the throttle to idle for about 20 seconds, then runs smooth. Everything points to a loose belt, but the tension feels tight when the engine is stopped?! I'll have to talk to Bob in Salmon Arm BC about that.
@@challenger2ultralightadventureAre you sure it's the redrive rattling? Make sure you can slide the belt with your fingertips on the top cog. It shouldn't be tight. How did the bearings feel before you put the belt on? nice and smooth?
Bearings on the redrive were nice and smooth. That rattle coincided with the cog belt shaking a lot. As soon as the belt steadied, the rattle went away...and the engine RPM rose about 250 RPM?!
No need wasting time to prime the fuel system if you have enough battery 👍
Ah...but that's the key. Enough battery! I had enough battery, but by priming with the electric fuel pump, It will start much faster. Having fuel pressure at startup is a good thing.
@@challenger2ultralightadventure Absolutely 👍
Have you flown this 2 year build yet?
The delays in getting my pilots license in the past 2 years, for obvious reasons, means that I have not flown it . Yet. But I will be doing my PPL check ride in about 2 months, and then be able to fly it. I will film that event, and the flights after. So you and everyone else can celebrate with me.
It’s not streaming, for me, for some reason, Peter 😩.
CZcams takes about 30 minutes to process videos. It may just be delayed. I checked on my phone and it came through in low resolution. It should be good at high def now though.
